How We Chose the Best Cooling Mattress

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests performed by our diverse cast of experts that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. We test a variety of body types in a variety of sleeping positions to cover the bases for all sleepers, so you can choose the best mattress that works for you.

For the best cooling beds, we obviously focused on one category: cooling. In our studio, we actually test the cooling ability of beds with a temperature gun to see how long it takes the surface of the bed to cool down after we lay in it.

Julia Forbes testing temperature dissipation on a mattress
Our lead product tester, Julia Forbes, taking the temperature of a mattress

Out of all mattresses we’ve tested, we found that the average temperature regulation score is 3.9 out of 5. But all the mattresses on this roundup have an average rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars when it comes to cooling.

So, you can rest assured that these are truly the best of the batch. Read on to find out which of these cool beds works best for you, based on the categories we’ve outlined.

What We Want to See in a Cooling Mattress

There are a few components in a cooling mattress that make it, well, cool. Here’s what we looked for when we checked out the best cool beds:

Breathable materials.

A lot of mattresses say they have a “breathable construction,” but what does that really mean? Well, it essentially means that how it was built allows for air to keep flowing through its layers. An example of how a manufacturer might do this is by using open-celled foams or individually wrapped coils, which allows for pockets through which hot air can escape.

Cooling covers.

A lot of beds can tack on a cooling cover to balance out any heat-trapping properties, so you get the best of both worlds. This cover can be composed of many different materials or temperature-regulating technologies, but it overall keeps cooling focused at the surface of the mattress—AKA right where you lay on it. This can be achieved through the use of breathable fibers, phase change materials, or other materials designed to absorb excess heat.

Why the Helix Midnight Luxe Earned Editor’s Pick

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a premium option for hot sleepers thanks to multiple cooling features. It’s a hybrid mattress, so its coils provide more airflow than foam would alone, and its Tencel™ pillow top adds even more air movement to the mix. “I love the cool pillow top cover,” said Mattress Tester Emma. “It adds quite a bit of extra cushioning that I really like.”

As a welcome bonus, this bed’s coils are individually wrapped to minimize motion transfer. They sit on top of a DuraDense Foam base unit, and above them, you’ll find a layer of memory plus foam, a layer of gel Visco foam, and a layer of high-grade poly foam. Overall, the Midnight Luxe has a medium-firm feel that should be suitable for both side and back sleepers.

What’s the Helix Midnight Luxe Made Of?

The Helix Midnight stands 13.5 inches tall and is composed of 6 layers.

The quilted pillow top usually comes with a breathable Tencel™ cover, but you can upgrade to a GlacioTex™ cover for even more cooling—it has thermal-conducting fibers to draw away unwanted body heat.

Next come three layers of CertiPUR-US® certified foam: a responsive layer for cradling, a copper gel-infused layer for cooling pressure relief, and a high-density layer that transitions into the innerspring unit.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction

The coils are individually wrapped and zoned to provide boosted support to the lumbar region. They’re also reinforced along the sides to stabilize the perimeter of the bed. Finally, the mattress is supported by a dense, durable foam base.

Our Take: “If you’ve got the extra cash to spend, and you want enhanced support, cushioning up top, and cooling, then the Luxe is worth it.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Relives pressure – The Helix Midnight Luxe is great for pressure relief thanks to its use of memory foam that reduces pressure buildup around key areas, such as the shoulders and hips. Side sleepers in particular should love it.
  • Versatility – This bed’s many features and medium-firm feel make it a good choice for a variety of sleepers. As Emma said, “Helix has done a lot of innovation to help make a bed that fits most people.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • Hefty – These features stack up, and we found that the mattress was heavy and difficult to move on your own. We recommend having someone on hand to help transport it.
  • Too soft for some – Stomach sleepers, especially those on the heavier side, may find the Helix’s cushioning top too soft. They need lots of support around the hips and therefore might prefer a firmer mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Luxe

On Helix’s website, the mattress scores 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress for its customized support but have reported that it may not be the best option for those who prefer an exceptionally soft sleep surface.

Why the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Side Sleepers

The Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid is perhaps the coolest bed the brand offers, thanks to its hybrid construction and inclusion of naturally cooling and antibacterial copper. Sturdy coils not only keep air flowing through the mattress, but they keep up the support.

More than that, side sleepers should be pleased with the bed’s soft, pressure-relieving foams on top. You should feel pleasantly cradled by this mattress without feeling too “stuck” in it, thanks to its responsive feel.

What’s the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid Made Of?

The Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid is 14 inches tall with seven total layers. All foams used in its construction are CertiPUR-US® certified.

First up is its cover, which is where the bed gets its name: copper and heat-wicking polyethylene fibers keep cool alongside an antimicrobial finish. The next layer, beneath the cover, is 2 inches of soft-feel memory foam for pressure relief. Then, another 2-inch layer of a firmer, more supportive foam keeps the spine aligned. A final inch of foam transitions into the coil unit.

Take a look inside the Nectar Premier Copper construction

The 8-inch thick innerspring unit features individually wrapped coils that should keep you lifted and the edges sturdy. Underneath, an inch of memory foam acts as the foundation for the mattress. Finally, a lower cover ensures the mattress won’t slip and slide.

Our Take: “But where this really shined for me was on my side. The Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid is really soft on top, but it’s also responsive because of the coils. It felt like I was being cradled really gently without sinking too far into the mattress.” – Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Has bounce – The coils in the Premier Copper Hybrid not only keep air flowing through the mattress, but they also make the surface pretty responsive. Combination sleepers should enjoy the ease of movement when they toss and turn.
  • Promotes alignment – This bed, though pressure-relieving, also wins in the alignment department. On their side or back, our testers felt comfortably supported.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too soft for some – The plush foams on top of the Premier Copper Hybrid are a boon for most side sleepers, but may not work for everyone. Heavier folks and sleepers who prefer their stomach should find themselves sinking in too far to feel comfortable.
  • Not a budget option – Nectar is known for their affordable mattresses, but this is considered a more luxurious bed by the brand. Before sales, a queen model of the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid costs over $2,000.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid

The Nectar Premier Copper has a 4.4 out of 5 stars on the Nectar site. While some customers appreciate the cooling properties provided by the copper-infused foam in the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid, others have noted that it may have a slight off-gassing odor initially.

Why the DreamCloud Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Couples

The DreamCloud’s gel memory foam does double duty for couples who are at risk of sleeping hot. Not only does it help to keep sleepers cool throughout the night, it also conforms to the body, easing the stress on common pressure points. The mattress’s plush quilted top boosts the cooling factor even more with enhanced breathability.

Sleeping partners should also appreciate DreamCloud’s robust spring system, which cuts motion transfer and boosts airflow with its pocketed coils.

What’s the DreamCloud Made Of?

Coming in at an impressive 14 inches of height, the DreamCloud has a total of 7 layers when you count its top and bottom covers. The top cover is made of a velvety cashmere blend for maximum comfort.

The next three layers are made of CertiPUR-US® certified foams: a 1.5-inch plush layer for cushioning, a 1-inch cooler gel-infused layer for deeper pressure relief, and a 2-inch dynamic layer for spinal alignment that also transitions into the coil system.

The DreamCloud’s innerspring unit is 8.5 inches tall and made up of individually wrapped coils that are thicker around the perimeter. It sits atop a stable foam base.

DreamCloud Premier Mattress Construction

Finally, the lower cover mitigates slipping and has handles for simple transport.

My Take: The DreamCloud consistently ranks among my favorite mattresses, and it has a number of features that cater to couples. Notably, it balances motion isolation and responsiveness, meaning you should be able to move around easily without waking up your partner.

What I Liked

  • Support for all – When I tried out different positions on this mattress, I found myself properly supported in each. Therefore, I’d say that regardless of how you sleep, the DreamCloud will likely work with you.
  • Affordable luxury – The DreamCloud comes in at about $1,400 for a Queen, and that’s before sales or coupons. Based on all the high-quality and luxury features you’re getting, I think the price is more than fair.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not for foam purists – The DreamCloud has multiple foam layers, but it’s first and foremost a hybrid, so it won’t have the classic sinking, “hugging” feeling typical of all-foam mattresses.
  • Edges could be better – Though the coils get thicker at the edges of the mattress, I found they didn’t quite hold me up when sitting on the perimeter. It’s something to keep in mind if you enjoy sitting or laying on the edges of your bed.

Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud

The DreamCloud Original scores a solid 4.7 out of 5 stars among customers on its site. One potential downside of the DreamCloud Original mattress is its weight, making it challenging to move or rotate, but it offers excellent support and comfort for those who prefer a medium-firm feel.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Cooling Firm Mattress

With extra-strong components built to support all body types and bedtime activities, the Emma Hybrid Comfort is a sturdy, dependable bed with enviable firmness.

Like many of the mattresses in this roundup, it’s a hybrid, so its construction should lend itself well to bounciness and breathability. It includes cooling foams and individually wrapped coils, as well as seven distinct zones in the innerspring unit for specialized support and pressure relief.

What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is 13 inches tall and has six total layers, including its moisture-wicking top cover. Underneath is a layer of Airgocell® foam. It has an open-pored design—as in, there are tiny air pockets distributed throughout its structure—that makes it more breathable than denser foams.

The Airgocell® layer leads into a layer of memory foam, which assists with motion isolation as well as pressure relief. It’s backed by a sheet of HRX (High Resiliency Extra) foam, which has a firmer feel and encourages spinal alignment over sinkage.

Next is the coil unit, with pocketed springs that prioritize durability plus responsiveness. This innerspring system is also zoned into seven distinct regions that give a customized level of support to different areas of the body.

Looking at the Emma Hybrid Construction in the lab

A final layer of robust foam makes up the base of the bed.

My Take: The Emma Hybrid Comfort’s durable design and specialized foams should appeal to just about anyone who prefers a firmer bed. I didn’t overheat at all when testing this mattress, either.

What I Liked

  • Zoned springs – Zoning enables the innerspring unit to offer multiple levels of resistance. Different areas will feel more or less cushiony depending on the pushback needed—softer under certain body parts, more supportive under others.
  • More motion isolation than you’d expect – The three foam layers above the coils make this hybrid especially adept at canceling motion, which is a rarity in a bed with springs.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s firmer than most beds – With this mattress, you’re out of medium-firm territory and into the truly firm bracket. Side sleepers and lightweight folks may think it feels rather hard.
  • Not explicitly eco-friendly – The Emma Hybrid Comfort uses high-quality CertiPUR-US® certified foams, but if you’re looking for a bed with organic or natural materials, this one doesn’t fit the bill.

Customer Reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort

This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet, but early customers already rate it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its excellent motion isolation, but some have reported that it may have a slight initial off-gassing odor upon unboxing.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Heavy People

Thanks to its height (13.5 inches) and high-density foam layers, the WinkBed is a good option for heavy people. Its Tencel™ cover helps to wick away moisture, keeping hot sleepers cool throughout the night. Its Euro-style pillowtop also features a 2-inch layer of gel-infused foam for added temperature regulation.

WinkBed’s innerspring unit has an 8-inch coil layer designed to support the areas on the body that experience the most pressure. It provides zoned support in five to seven areas, depending on the mattress firmness you choose.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is 13.5 inches tall and comes in four firmness options, with the Firm and Plus models being the most suitable for heavy people. All models provide zoned support for sleepers looking for gentle contouring and pressure relief.

First up is the gel-infused Euro top covered by a Tencel™ cover for the perfect combination of moisture-wicking and cushioning capabilities.

Beneath some transitional foam layers that provide extra support and motion isolation is the spring unit. The coils are individually wrapped and zoned to offer the proper give and strengthened around the perimeter for reinforced edges.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

Our Take: “I am a heavier sleeper, so I want to feel like my mattress is sturdy and won’t sag too much. Luckily, the WinkBed [Plus] is ideal for my body type.” – Sean, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Sturdy edges – We thought the WinkBed was strong and sturdy, and the same goes for the edges. The coils bolster support around the perimeter, so sitting or laying on the edges of the bed shouldn’t be an issue.
  • Customizable – There’s ample opportunity to customize the WinkBed as you see fit. As my fellow tester Mark put it, “There’s multiple firmness options, so you can choose what style is going to best fit your body.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • Transfers motion – The WinkBed’s hybrid construction doesn’t lend itself well to dampening motion. You’re likely to feel your partner moving on the other side of the bed.
  • Supportive, not quite soft – Instead of sinking into the mattress like a traditional foam bed, you’re going to feel mostly like you’re resting “on top” of the bed. This can be good for heavier folks, but it’s important to keep in mind if you want the “hugging” feel.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Earned Best Cooling Gel Mattress

The Aurora Luxe has exceptional cooling capabilities in a luxury design that provides comfort and support. Its CopperGel™-infused CopperFlex™ foam channels heat away from sleepers and combines the contouring power of memory foam with the responsiveness of a latex alternative.

Among its variety of features is phase-changing technology, which should respond to excess warmth and help those who sleep hot. Its hybrid construction also includes an innerspring base that helps air flow naturally through the mattress, so hot air shouldn’t stick to you at the surface. My colleague Emma was super impressed with this bed’s cooling abilities: “It’s one of the coolest sleeping mattresses that we’ve ever received,” she said.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Made Of?

The Aurora Luxe is available in three firmnesses: Soft, Medium, and Firm. Its six layers measure up to 13 inches thick. The first is a GlacioTex™ cover that gives the bed its cool surface. For an extra fee, you can add a cloud pillow top for more cushioning.

Then comes three layers of foam. First, a 1.5-inch layer of CopperFlex™ foam, a latex alternative infused with phase change material that excels in responsiveness and temperature control. Next is 2 (1.5 in Firm option) inches of bouncy, soft Supreme Response Comfort Foam. The third layer is an inch of gel swirl memory foam for cooling pressure relief; in the Firm model, this will be a firmer, thicker layer of firmer VariFlex™ foam.

Take a closer look at the construction of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

The innerspring unit is made up of individually encased zoned Ascension® coils for support. It ultimately sits on top of a 0.75-inch foam base.

My Take: The Aurora Luxe feels cool to the touch, but that’s not all. During testing with a temperature gun, I found that the surface temperature of the cover was quick to return to its original state after I got up from the bed, and even dipped a bit lower after about five minutes.

What I Liked

  • Cushions without collapsing – Not only are its layers optimized to keep sleepers cool, but this bed also provides a gentle cradle instead of sinking sleepers deep into heat-trapping layers.
  • Suits a lot of sleepers – The Aurora Luxe should also be comfortable for a variety of sleeping positions. The bed is available in three firmness options: Soft, Medium, and Firm.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not the sturdiest edges – Despite Brooklyn Bedding reinforcing the perimeters of all their beds, I found that when I sat on the edge of the Aurora Luxe, there was more sagging than I’d like.
  • Feels firmer – Be aware that the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, even with the Medium model, doesn’t offer much sinkage. Lightweight sleepers might need a softer mattress for the right amount of give.

Customer Reviews of the Aurora Luxe

On Brooklyn Bedding’s site, the Aurora Luxe has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers praise the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress for its advanced cooling features, but some have mentioned that it is relatively expensive compared to other options.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Back Pain

The Bear Star Hybrid has a hand-quilted fiber cover made with Celliant®, a performance textile, and HydroCool® technology for cooling. The cover aims to convert kinetic energy (in this case, your body heat) into infrared light, and is reportedly able to up the amount of oxygen in your blood and reduce inflammation.

That feature alone could be beneficial for back pain, but the foams and springs below bring a crucial combination of give and support to the mix. Back and side sleepers who struggle with back pain should therefore benefit from the spine alignment and pressure relief this bed provides.

What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Star Hybrid stands 13 inches tall and has 5 total layers including its cover. This cover gives the bed its cool-to-the-touch feel—it’s made with HydroCool® and Celliant® fibers for a unique moisture-wicking surface. Celliant® specifically is said to aid in muscle recovery by converting your excess body heat into infrared energy.

Next come two layers of foam. The first is a Serene Gel Foam layer that adds pressure relief, and the second is a more responsive foam for buoyancy.

The foam layers lead into the innerspring unit of the mattress, which is composed of individually wrapped coils.

Take a closer look at the Bear Star Hybrid mattress construction

These coils are reinforced at the edges of the mattress, enhancing the perimeter’s stability. Underneath is the base layer of the mattress made of dense foam.

Our Take: “The cover has a cool-to-the-touch feel … [it’s] a refreshing sleep surface.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Great for multiple sleep positions – This bed’s firmer foams allow for adaptability that can cater to a variety of sleepers, not just those who sleep on their backs. Stomach sleepers should find it cozy, as well.
  • Certified safe – The Bear Star Hybrid boasts a number of non-toxic guarantees, including CertiPUR-US® certified foams and no fiberglass components. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning it’s been tested for certain harmful chemicals and emissions.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Could be bouncier – Hybrids are usually known for their responsiveness, but we found that the foam layers on top mitigated a lot of the Bear Star Hybrid’s bounce.
  • Might be too firm – While the Bear Star Hybrid does have pressure-relieving foams, it’s a tad firmer than you might expect. If you’re a memory foam aficionado or lightweight side sleeper, you might not get the amount of sink that you prefer.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid

Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Cooling Innerspring Mattress

Saatva’s original luxury model is a tall bed that combines foam layers with two coil units for a cool and comfortable sleeping experience. By employing a thin layer of soft pillow-top foam atop an inner strip of memory foam, the mattress separates sleepers from heat–retentive material while still conferring pressure-relieving benefits.

While the coils in the first innerspring are individually pocketed for zoned support and motion isolation, the taller and firmer springs below are connected to foster bounce, prevent weakening over time, and increase airflow.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic is pretty customizable. Choose from two heights (11.5 or 14.5 inches) and three firmnesses (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm).

The first layer is a 3-inch Euro pillow top with lots of cushion, though it’s also specially quilted in the center to support the lower back. Beneath it is a dense foam “crown” that further bolsters the lumbar region.

There are two coil units within the Saatva classic. The first unit is composed of individually pocketed coils with stronger springs in the middle, which—you guessed it—are meant to support the lower back.

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress

The second spring unit is geared toward durability and promotes airflow through the mattress. Within these units also lies the Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire to promote proper alignment. Finally, the perimeter of the bed is lined with dense foam rails to reinforce the edges.

My Take: Saatva is one of our favorite brands, and you can’t go wrong with the Classic. It’s a step up from typical hybrids since it has two separate coil units to tackle support, all while maintaining its breathable profile.

What I Liked

  • Customizable – Saatva beds come in three firmness levels (and two heights!) to accommodate a range of preferences. You should be able to build and order a bed to your precise specifications.
  • White glove delivery – Saatva offers free white glove delivery with every mattress. This means that they’ll come to your home to get rid of your old mattress and install your new one—at no extra cost! The Classic doesn’t come in a box, so there’s no waiting for your mattress to decompress.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Returns cost extra – If you’re someone who likes to try before you buy, be aware that returning a Saatva classic (even within the return window) will cost you $99.
  • Motion transfers – The springiness of the Saatva Classic means great responsiveness, but also more movement that you’re likely to feel from the other side of the bed.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Nolah Natural Earned Best Cooling Natural Mattress

The Nolah Natural is an environmentally friendly hybrid mattress with enviable cooling capabilities: Under its organic cotton cover is a likewise organic and breathable wool layer that helps prevent overheating.

This bed boasts a number of certifications to ensure you’re getting the highest-quality natural materials, including GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton, as well as Oeko-Tex® 100 1 certified latex (made without specific harmful chemicals).

What’s the Nolah Natural Made Of?

The Nolah Natural is 11 inches thick and composed of six layers plus an organic cotton cover.

The first layer is GOTS-certified organic wool, a natural flame retardant that retains cooling breathability. Underneath is a 2-inch layer of Talalay latex, which relieves pressure more reliably than synthetic latex.

Then, a 1-inch transitional latex layer is followed by Nolah’s proprietary 8-inch HDMax™ Tri-Zone™ coils, forming three targeted support zones for different areas of the body.

Nolah Natural Construction

Finally, the bed rests on top of an organic wool and cotton blend foundation. The bottom cotton cover has handles to make it easier to move the Nolah Natural around.

Our Take: The Nolah Natural checks a ton of boxes: it’s eco-friendly, cooling, pressure-relieving, and durable. Most environmentally conscious sleepers looking to stay cool should appreciate what it has to offer.

What We LIked

  • Pillowy yet supportive – The Nolah Natural’s combination of supportive features and comfortable cushioning make it a great choice for those who sleep on their back and sides.
  • Hypoallergenic – The same materials that make this bed a “natural” mattress also make it a good choice for those with allergies. The organic and non-toxic components of this bed can help mitigate allergy symptoms, and latex foam is an innately hypoallergenic material.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too soft for some – The Nolah Natural has a medium feel that might not work for everyone, including heavier folks or those who sleep on their stomachs. These sleepers need support in crucial areas where a softer mattress like the Nolah Natural might fall short.
  • Lacking motion isolation – This bed is bouncy thanks to its coils and latex, and that means movement is going to travel across the surface. Light sleepers who share their bed with a restless partner might want to look elsewhere.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Natural

On Nolah’s website, the Nolah Natural gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Nolah Natural mattress for its eco-friendly materials and pressure relief, but some have reported a minimal initial off-gassing odor upon setup.

Why the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Back Sleepers

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid is stellar at balancing cushioning and support, which makes it a solid option for back sleepers. It’s got plenty of plush layers of foam, yet when I laid on this bed, I felt properly aligned and lifted.

As the moniker “Chill” implies, the bed is also outfitted with plenty of cooling features. In addition to its coils, which permit easy airflow, its top cover is woven with cooling fibers to promote an ideal temperature for the skin.

What’s the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Made Of?

The Sapira Chill Hybrid has seven layers including its cover and stands 14 inches tall. Its cooling cover features heat-conducting polyethylene fibers that should help siphon heat away from your body. It also has handles for easy transportation.

Underneath the cover is a 2-inch foam layer with cooling gel, designed to provide support without too much sinking. Then come three more foam layers: a 1.5-inch breathable comfort layer, a 1-inch bouncy responsive layer, and a 1-inch transitional pressure-relieving foam layer. All of the foams in the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Check out a close-up of the Leesa Sapira Hybrid construction

The innerspring unit of this mattress contains up to 1,023 individually wrapped coils, zoned in 3 distinct areas to give the proper give and support for proper alignment. Finally, the bed sits on a sturdy base of dense foam.

My Take: The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid should keep you from overheating while maintaining even weight distribution, making it a great choice for folks who run hot and sleep on their backs.

What I Liked

  • Multiple firmness options – The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid comes in three different firmnesses: Plush, Medium-Firm, and Firm. I tried out the medium-firm and would absolutely recommend it for back sleepers.
  • Great pressure relief – During testing, I didn’t notice any pressure buildup around problem areas, especially when it came to laying on my back.

Potential Drawbacks

  • A bit pricey – The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid retails at more than $2,000 for a queen, making it one of the more expensive mattresses on this list.
  • Not for stomach sleepers – Dedicated back sleepers or those who switch to their side shouldn’t have a problem on this bed, but stomach sleepers are going to need something firmer to support their hips.

Customer Reviews on the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Leesa’s website. Customers value the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid for its excellent temperature regulation and comfort, but some mention it’s less effective for side sleepers due to its firmness.

What is a Cooling Mattress?

A cooling mattress is a bed built with temperature-regulating materials that aim to prevent an uncomfortable excess of heat. The types of cooling materials in these mattresses can vary as much as the beds themselves. For example, memory foam is notorious for overheating, so many companies infuse copper, graphite, or gel to keep things cool.

Many companies also utilize the covers of their mattresses to convey cooling effects. From phase change technologies to moisture-wicking fabrics, these advancements help to keep sleepers comfortable.

How We Test the Best Cooling Mattresses

When it comes to testing how well a bed cools, we get pretty serious at Sleep Advisor. We even use temperature guns to get a super precise reading that helps quantify our overall rating.

We test the temperature of the mattress surface a total of three times:

  • First, we take the initial surface temperature of the mattress with the gun.
  • Second, one of our testers lays on the mattress for five minutes, and we record the temperature.
  • Then, we lay on there for another five minutes, then test the temperature again.
Julia Forbes testing how fast a mattress cools down

This allows us to see whether the mattress heats up, stays the same, or provides active cooling. It’s rare that a mattress will lower the temperature, as humans run pretty hot, but a mattress is considered especially cooling (a 5/5) if the temperature remains within 5 degrees Fahrenheit of the initial recorded temperature.

We also add some of our own opinions. For example, even if the temperature gun says the bed is maintaining temperature, it might still feel warm to some testers. We also consider the bed’s featured cooling tech into our calculations, some of which may not be able to see the results of in a mere 10 minutes.

What to Look for in a Cooling Mattress

Certain mattress types will keep you cooler than others. If temperature regulation is a major priority for you, then you’ll need to know how different mattress materials perform in this arena.

Type of Mattress

Innerspring Mattresses

Coil units encourage cooling because air can flow freely through them, keeping the bed’s overall temperature down. Classic innerspring mattresses feature coils that are interconnected, and though they provide lots of bounce, they also heighten motion transfer.

These days, the best innerspring mattresses have pocketed coils instead of the interconnected spring unit. Pocketed coils are each wrapped in a separate fabric sleeve so that they can move and compress independently of one another, cutting down on motion transfer while preserving their support and cooling capabilities.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses incorporate both coils and foams into their design. Therefore, they can provide the cooling benefits of a spring unit while also offering the signature pressure relief that comes with foams.

The best hybrid mattresses will take cooling into consideration from their very first layer. Gel-infused foams, cooling covers, and moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics are common. Because these beds tend to be cutting-edge, though, they’re often more expensive than simpler innerspring or all-foam models.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam retains a fair amount of heat, so in order to sell all-foam beds that keep sleepers cool, mattress-makers have had to get creative. If you’re considering a memory foam mattress but struggle with overheating at night, be sure to read up on the cooling features available. Different brands have different approaches to making their foams feel comfortable.

One common tactic is to infuse the foam with cooling gel, which helps to absorb excess heat. This can also be done with copper, a natural coolant that also possesses some antibacterial properties. Another is to manufacture foam with an “open cell” design, which decreases the density of the foam and adds tiny, aerating pockets to its structure.

Other mattresses might have cooling covers with these features sewn into them, or they might boast phase-change technology to dissipate excess heat. More on that later.

Latex Mattresses

Latex is a type of foam that has more cooling properties than traditional poly foams. It doesn’t trap heat as much as memory foam, and its naturally breathable structure means that it retains a comfy temperature night after night.

Some latex mattresses are made with natural and certified organic latex foam, resulting in an especially eco-friendly product.

The downside to latex beds is that they’re slightly higher in price. However, their many benefits and overall durability make them a worthwhile investment.

Sleeping Position

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper

If you’re a side sleeper, you likely need more pressure relief around your shoulders and hips. Beds with memory foam layers and a soft or medium firmness are ideal.

Back sleepers usually need a balance of pressure relief and support. Many back sleepers can sleep comfortably on foam or hybrid models but should stick to medium and medium-firm beds.

Stomach sleepers will typically enjoy the durable support of coils, though firmer all-foam models should still perform well. This group tends to need an overall firmer mattress than the others.

Lastly, combination sleepers need a responsive bed that fosters easy repositioning and accommodates different postures. Usually, a medium-firm model is good for this group.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

Your body weight has a direct impact on the type of mattress that works best for you. Lightweight people tend to sleep better on softer mattresses that allow them to push down into them for a gentle hug, whereas their heavier counterparts find the most restful sleep on supportive and firm mattresses. If your weight falls in the middle of the scale, it is likely that the firmness level that you will rest best on will also be in the middle.

When it comes to cooling, sometimes those of different weights may experience a mattress’s cooling effects differently. For example, a lightweight person may feel a mattress is more cooling than someone of a heavier weight who sinks further into the layers, or vice versa. Cooling can be subjective, but regardless of how much you weigh, you should be able to find a mattress that can cool you down.

Firmness

The ideal mattress firmness for you can depend on your weight, sleep style, and comfort preferences. Luckily, a bed’s firmness doesn’t have too much of an effect on its cooling abilities, though you should always look into the differences in materials between the firmer and softer models of a given mattress.

The majority of mattresses come in a medium or medium-firm feel, which is the most universal preference in terms of comfort. This firmness level is usually best for average-size sleepers, combination sleepers, and those who lie on their back.

Softer beds are usually ideal for lightweight and side sleepers who don’t require as much support. Firm beds are best for stomach sleepers and heavier individuals, as they deliver increased support to ensure optimal spinal alignment.

In terms of cooling, sometimes a softer mattress can feel warmer if it cradles you so you feel further “stuck” in the mattress. The reverse can also be true if the cover itself is cooling, since you’ll have more contact with the surface and perhaps reap more cooling benefits. A firmer mattress may keep you lifted so you have less contact with the mattress itself, and depending on the temperature of your surroundings and sheets, this can make you feel warmer or colder.

Again, it can get subjective, so be sure to consider why and how you may feel like you’re overheating in your bed, and if your bed’s feel may be the culprit.

Sex

Sex can definitely cause you to work up a sweat and a mattress that helps keep you cool could make you and your partner more comfortable. Fortunately, latex, hybrid, and innerspring mattresses are both excellent for sex and for keeping you cool. Latex and coils are naturally cooling and responsive. This means that not only will these mattresses keep you from overheating during sex, but they can also prevent users from feeling stuck when repositioning.

Budget

Cooling mattresses with advanced temperature-regulation features will likely be more expensive than standard models, but for many hot sleepers, the perks are worth the investment.

If you’re looking to save on your mattress purchase, you might consider a few strategies. You could opt for an all-foam or innerspring cooling bed instead of a hybrid or latex mattress, as the latter two types tend to be priced higher. You can also track the calendar for discounts and deals around holidays such as Presidents’ Day and Memorial Day.

Finally, we recommend shopping for your mattress online. This direct-to-consumer model allows mattress companies to cut costs, resulting in more budget-friendly beds for shoppers.

What’s the Best Temperature for Sleep?

The best temperature for sleep falls in the range of 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit.1

Some people may like their environment to be cooler than others, but keeping your bedroom’s temperature within this window should be conducive to achieving a good night’s rest.

The best temperature for a baby’s room, however, is a tad warmer: between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.1

You can track your bedroom’s temperature by feel or with a thermostat, and adjust it using whatever tools you have at your disposal, including air conditioning, additional (or fewer) layers, and fans.

Other Materials to Look For in Cooling Mattresses

The trick to finding an effective cooling mattress is to verify that it has certain temperature-regulating materials or features. Cooling beds should at least have one of these aspects, if not several.

Cooling Mattress Covers

The cover is the outermost part of the mattress, and therefore the closest layer to your body. Many mattress brands therefore incorporate temperature-regulating materials into their covers for an immediate cooling effect.

You might see a couple of common terms as you browse cooling covers. These are special materials with cooling and moisture-wicking properties:

  • TENCEL™ – This material is naturally derived from the Eucalyptus tree. The fibers are touted as breathable and soft, hence their use in covers.
  • GlacioTex™ – Helix often uses this type of cover on many of their luxury models. It’s made from fibers that aim to conduct unwanted heat away from the body.2
  • Celliant® – This is a performance textile that reportedly converts excess heat into infrared energy, which then promotes muscle recovery. It’s often marketed towards athletes who need rejuvenation after an active day, but it comes alongside some possible cooling benefits.

Mattress covers can also be quilted or non-quilted.

  • A quilted cover has a more traditional look and sews extra material (such as poly foam) into its first layer. Their thickness makes it so the top of the mattress is more insulated, often making it run hotter. This can be addressed by adding cooling materials such as breathable fibers or even gel foams.
  • Non-quilted covers are thinner and often more breathable, since they only contain one layer. It’s possible that they may make your mattress feel a little firmer or less cushioning.

Gel-Infused Foam

Although foam is a popular mattress material, its density can trap heat. This fact is especially true for memory foam.

To combat this drawback, manufacturers have started infusing cooling gel into the foam to help mitigate the heat. The gel works by absorbing excess body heat and then releasing it away.

Some companies utilize special gels that incorporate metals and other materials, such as graphite or copper. These substances help with cooling and may also have antimicrobial properties.

Phase-Change Materials

Phase-change technology is used in a variety of applications, but when it comes to mattresses, it’s often found in the cover or used in foams to regulate the temperature. The way that phase-change materials (PCM) work is by storing or absorbing the thermal energy that builds up when matter changes states (AKA from a solid to a liquid or vice versa).3 The source of the energy, in this case, would be your body heat. PCM can also release that heat once the temperature becomes cold gain.

This equilibrium is likely to be more comfortable for people who sleep hot and cold alike and is especially ideal for couples.

Cooling Mattress Accessories

In addition to the mattress itself, you can utilize other bedding accessories and products to help promote a cooler sleep space.

Cooling Pillows

A high-quality cooling pillow should prevent heat from accumulating so your head stays nice and cool through the night. Bedding companies can incorporate cooling features into the pillow’s fill, cover, or both.

Many cooling pillows use gel or shredded foam to mitigate heat, while others may use breathable fibers like buckwheat or bamboo. When paired with a breathable pillowcase, these materials can be all the more effective at temperature control.

Cooling Sheets

Investing in a set of cooling sheets can be highly advantageous for people who sleep hot. Because you sleep directly against your sheets, you’re likely to feel their cooling effect immediately.

As you shop, look for terms like “breathable,” “moisture-wicking,” and
“thermoregulating.” Additionally, you can count on specific fabrics like bamboo, TENCEL™, cotton, and Egyptian cotton to offer a cooler sleeping experience.

Cooling Mattress Toppers

Generally, mattress toppers are used as a means to enhance the mattress’ feel for extra support or cushioning. However, if you’re a hot sleeper, you can select a cooling mattress topper that’s designed to keep your bed cozily chill, particularly if you’re not yet ready to commit to a new mattress.

Cooling Comforters & Blankets

In some cases, the comforter or blanket you use may make you feel extra hot at night, and changing things up could make a significant difference. These are also helpful during the summer months when the temperatures rise.

Look for materials like cotton, bamboo, Egyptian cotton, and satin when searching for cooling blankets.

Mattress Pads

Cooling mattress pads are a great solution for sleepers who want more cooling but can’t yet afford a brand-new mattress.

A mattress pad is similar to a mattress topper but tends to be thinner and not as impactful when it comes to changing the feel of the bed. Still, there are pads designed specifically for cooling that should be able to guard against extra warmth at night.

Best Cooling Mattress FAQs

How can I sleep cooler at night?

To achieve more comfort as you sleep, you can mix and match various strategies for making your bedroom colder.

    • Use a mattress with multiple cooling elements in its construction.

    • Purchase bedding made from naturally breathable materials.

    • Outfit your bedroom with cooling accessories such as fans and AC units.

    • Sleep in less clothing or lighter pajamas.

    • Sleep with one foot or leg outside of the covers.

    • Open a window to let cool air into the room.

    • Limit light (and subsequent heat) by putting blackout curtains on the windows or keeping the blinds closed at night.

    • Sleep on the lowest level of your home.

Do cooling mattresses really work?

Yes, the cooling and temperature-regulating features inside modern mattresses can help minimize heat retention and discomfort for many sleepers. Certain features may cause a notable cooling sensation, whereas others simply help your body to stay at a cozy temperature throughout the night.

You’ll probably find that you experience more pronounced cooling effects with some technologies over others, so experiment with various kinds of cooling materials and accessories to find the best mattress for you.

How do I keep my mattress cool?

You can choose multiple ways to keep your mattress cool at night. Invest in products like a mattress topper, pillows, and sheets that are designed to promote cooling. Opening the windows, running a fan, and turning on your air conditioning can always help bring down the temperature of the room for easier sleeping.

What is the most breathable mattress material?

The most breathable mattress materials are coils and latex. Coils allow air to flow through them, which keeps things breathable, and latex is naturally temperature-neutral. Memory foams infused with gel or copper or those that have an open-cell structure are also cooler than traditional memory foams.

Are spring mattresses cooler than memory foam ones?

Yes, spring mattresses are cooler than memory foam. Spring mattresses are built with coils, and as mentioned, they foster airflow for enhanced cooling. Conversely, memory foam’s high density causes it to trap heat, though many manufacturers integrate cooling gels in the material to help with this.
