Side sleeping has a lot of benefits as a body position. It not only encourages healthy spine alignment but also reduces the risk of several conditions, including back pain, heartburn, snoring, bloating, and constipation.
However, side sleepers may experience hip and shoulder pain due to the pressure exerted on these areas in bed. They’ll typically require more pressure relief from their mattresses than back or stomach sleepers.
With this and other features in mind, I’ll share the best mattresses for side sleepers below. These beds should comfortably cradle your key pressure points so that you can snooze on your side without stress.

How We Choose the Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers
As one of the lead product testers for Sleep Advisor, my job is to thoroughly evaluate mattresses in our testing studio. I test for multiple categories important to consumers to determine which beds I think are a good fit for certain sleepers.
For this roundup, I compiled a list of mattresses that myself and other testers have rated well for side sleeping. Side sleepers have unique needs, so I made sure to feature beds that I think most side sleepers would be happy with.
Additionally, I had our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj, review this full page for medical and health accuracy based on his years of experience and triple board certification background.
What We Want to See in a Mattress for Side Sleepers
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is a big one for side sleepers because it can help prevent them from waking up with aches on the side they’re lying on. The mattresses on this list have all received high scores for pressure relief from our team.
Foams in the Construction
In order to get pressure relief, you’re going to need a mattress that has cushiony foams in it to cradle those joints. You’ll find that all the beds on this list have great comfort layers that should serve side sleepers well.
Good Support for Side Sleeping
While support is vital for side sleepers, support shouldn’t be overlooked either. That’s why the beds here also fared well for support for most side sleepers, which means their spine should remain in a healthy alignment to prevent back pain.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers Overall
As one of many mattresses in Helix’s Core Collection, the Helix Midnight was created specifically to satisfy side sleepers. It has a medium-firm feel that preserves both support and a pillowy surface. When lying on it, my fellow tester Emma enjoyed how the “hips and shoulders have a little cushion around them.” While the foams cushion on top, the sturdy springs underneath also keep up the support and promote spinal alignment.
With all this in mind, it’s no surprise it earned our top spot.
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Helix Midnight has five internal layers (plus a cover) and stands 11.5 inches tall.
- Layer 1 – Cover.
- Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. This layer should mold to your body and relieve pressure from the parts that bear the most weight.
- Layer 3-4 – Helix Responsive Foam. Both have a medium feel, and they work together to deepen the mattress’s cradling effect while also adding crucial support.
- Layer 5 – Coil Layer. The innerspring unit features pocketed coils that are reinforced on the long sides of the bed to keep the edges from buckling too much.
- Layer 6 – Duradense Foam. A base layer of solid, reliable foam.
Customer Reviews of The Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Memory Foam Mattress for Side Sleepers
Nectar is a staple of the online mattress industry, and its original all-foam model is a popular choice among budget-conscious sleepers. Those foam layers can feel particularly restful for side sleepers, as they absorb the pressure around the hips and shoulders without the sometimes-uncomfortable pushback of springs. There’s still plenty of support from the firm foams underneath, though. Therefore, I think that this bed would be a treat for lightweight and average-sized side sleepers.
What’s the Nectar Mattress Made Of?
The Nectar is 12 inches high and has three internal foam layers plus a cover.
- Layer 1 – Cover. A breathable cover that helps to redirect body heat.
- Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches). This is the most plush layer in the bed, and it molds to your body’s silhouette to relieve strain and pressure.
- Layer 3 – Responsive Foam (3 inches). This foam has a springier, more supportive feel.
- Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Base (7 inches). A denser, durable foundation of foam.
Customer Reviews of The Nectar
With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Best Soft Mattress for Side Sleepers
I’m super excited about the upgrade DreamCloud Premier provides to its super-supportive original: it adds a pillowy Euro top to the bed’s construction, making it far cushier than the standard model. “It’s one of our favorite recommendations for people who sleep on their sides,” said Emma, one of my fellow mattress testers. It doesn’t sacrifice support for the extra cushion, and the extra padding works great for those with sensitive joints.
What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?
The DreamCloud Premier stands 13 inches tall and has eight total layers.
- Layer 1 – Cover. The bed begins with a cashmere blend quilted cover that sports a delightful cloud pattern.
- Layer 2, 3 – Quilted Foam. Two layers of quilted foam, one soft and cushioning, the other for firmer support, make up the Euro top.
- Layer 4 – Gel Memory Foam. A cooler foam layer relieves pressure as you sink into the mattress surface.
- Layer 5 – Transitional Foam. A responsive, bolstering feel for promoting neutral spinal alignment
- Layer 6 – Coil Unit. Individually wrapped coils with pushback that are thicker around the perimeter of the bed for edge support.
- Layer 7 – Stability Base. This foundational layer of thick foam keeps the mattress stable.
- Layer 8 – Bottom Cover. Features handles for easy transportation as it works to keep your mattress in place.
Customer Reviews of The DreamCloud Premier
Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Side Sleepers
The WinkBed’s Euro pillow top has a dreamy, plush feel that’s perfect for side sleepers. But, as a hybrid bed, it also has both foam and coil enhancements that bring specialized support to the mix. These elements make it an appealing choice for side sleepers who want more lift than an all-foam bed can provide. “As someone who’s an exclusive side sleeper, I like that this cradles my body but it’s also supportive,” said our reviewer Mark.
What’s the WinkBed Made Of?
The WinkBed has a 13.5-inch profile and comes in four firmness levels, the last of which is intended for heavyweight sleepers: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.
- Cover. The cover is made of Tencel™, which is a breathable, moisture-wicking fabric produced from Eucalyptus wood pulp.
- Euro Top. This Euro pillow top features soft, gel-infused foam. The gel within the foam should prevent too much heat buildup near the mattress’s surface.
- Additional Foam Layers. After subsequent specialized layers of comfort foam, including a LumbarLayer™ that specifically lifts the lower back, you’ll reach the WinkBed’s coil unit.
- Coil Unit. The pocketed coils are zoned to provide different amounts of resistance depending on their location. Coils beneath the shoulders will compress more easily for extra cushioning, whereas those beneath the lumbar spine will give more support.
Customer Reviews of The WinkBed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Best Couple’s Mattress for Side Sleepers
The Nolah Evolution is a memorably lofty mattress with all the right ingredients for side sleeping alongside a partner: great motion isolation, stellar edge support, and a balanced feel that starts with a plush surface, thanks to its soft and breathable foams. “When I crawled into this bed, I could really feel it gently cradle my body,” said our tester, Stuart.
What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?
At 15 inches high, the Nolah Evolution is an impressively thick mattress. It has eight total layers if you count its top cover, and comes in three firmness options: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. Made of organic cotton and ArcticTex™ fibers that help to redirect uncomfortable warmth.
- Layer 2 – Pillow Top. A Euro pillow top quilted with soft, contouring foam. The quilting has high thermal conductivity to draw in and then diffuse heat through a surrounding vented gusset.
- Layer 3 – AirFoamICE™ (2 inches). This is Nolah’s proprietary cooling foam. The brand claims that this material is measurably better at pressure relief and temperature regulation than memory foams, as well as more durable.
- Layer 4 – High-Resilience Foam (2 inches). Another foam layer for added support.
- Layer 5 – Transition Foam (1 inch). A denser, springier foam leads into the coil unit below.
- Layer 6 – Innerspring Unit. The coils are divided into zones that give different levels of pushback to different areas of the body, thereby ensuring that the lumbar spine gets increased support while sensitive joints can sink a bit deeper.
- Layer 7 – Base. An underlying layer made of recycled plant fiber gives the mattress a strong foundation.
Customer Reviews of The Nolah Evolution
The Nolah Evolution rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Nolah’s website. Customers frequently commend the Nolah Evolution mattress for its exceptional pressure relief and cooling properties, but some have observed that it may produce slight off-gassing upon unboxing.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Back Pain
The Saatva Classic’s claim to fame is that it contains two innerspring units for enhanced support. This support system also places special emphasis on the lower back, which is often the site of back pain; also included in the bed’s construction are a foam lumbar crown and an alignment-promoting spinal wire. But all that support doesn’t mean that the Classic neglects the cushioning that side sleepers crave—its plush pillow top hugs pressure points like the hips and shoulders.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
The Saatva Classic stands either 11.5 or 14.5 inches high, depending on which height you order.
- Euro Top (3 inches). The bed begins with a Euro pillow top dressed in breathable organic cotton. The pillow top’s comfort foam should feel welcomingly soft even as its quilting firms up under your lumbar spine.
- Lumbar Crown. A band of memory foam is positioned beneath the lower back for targeted support.
- First Coil Layer. A set of pocketed “comfort coils” compress individually as pressure is applied. They’re also thicker in the lumbar area for added pushback.
- Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. This specialized wire is located within the coil units and increases the resistance of the springs around the lumbar zone.
- Second Coil Layer. A more traditional unit with interconnected coils for added durability.
- Foam Rails. As for edge support, the Classic boasts a perimeter lined with firm, high-density foam.
Customer Reviews of The Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Titan Plus Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Side Sleepers
Sometimes, mattresses designed for plus-sized people end up feeling too unyielding for side sleepers. But the Titan Plus Luxe is different—it preserves the soft, cushy upper layers that side sleepers need as well as the strong support features that are necessary for larger bodies. Our tester Sean was very impressed by this balance: “I never felt like I was stuck or that I was sinking into the bed. Even better, this had all the support I’ll ever need from a bed.”
What’s the Titan Plus Luxe Made Of?
The Titan Plus Luxe has five layers that add up to 13 inches of height.
- Layer 1 – Quilted Top (1 inch). A quilted top outfitted with gel foam. helps to keep the surface of the bed cool and makes for a welcoming, plush feel.
- Layer 2 – TitanFlex™ Foam (2 inches). This layer contours to the body while also maintaining a useful degree of responsiveness.
- Layer 3 – Energex™ Transition Foam (1 inch). A layer that supports the above comfort foams and segues into the bed’s coil unit.
- Layer 4 – Coil Layer (8 inches). The mattress’s durable coils are individually encased. They’re stronger around the perimeter of the bed for increased edge support.
- Layer 5 – Base Layer (1 inch). The mattress is backed by a foundation of high-density foam.
Customer Reviews of The Titan Plus Luxe
Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Side Sleepers
The Bear Elite Hybrid is often billed as a great bed for athletes, but it also works for folks who run hot and sleep on their sides. Its hybrid construction provides just the right mix of support from the coils and cooling pressure relief on top—thanks to its breathable foams and cooling cover (the latter of which features Celliant® and phase-change fibers). Stuart concluded that “it would do a good job of keeping anyone cool throughout the night.”
What’s the Bear Elite Hybrid Made Of?
The Bear Elite Hybrid is 14 inches high and has five main layers, including its top cover. It’s available in three firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm.
- Layer 1 – Cover. At the top, a hand-quilted cover boasts two kinds of specialized fibers: PCM (phase change material), and Celliant®. The PCM helps with offloading excess heat, and the Celliant® purportedly assists with muscle recovery after a day of movement.
- Layer 2 – Copper Memory Foam. This foam contours to the shape of your body while the copper inside it promotes cooling and guards against bacteria buildup.
- Layer 3 – Dynamic Transition Foam. This layer of dynamic transition foam serves as a comfy buffer between you and the innerspring unit below.
- Layer 4 – Coil Unit. The coils are individually wrapped and zoned for targeted levels of support across different regions, including a boost beneath your lumbar spine. They’re also reinforced along the perimeter of the unit for edge support.
- Layer 5 – Foundation. Finally, a layer of high-density foam acts as the base of the bed.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid
According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers
Typically, side sleepers gravitate toward softer mattresses that prioritize pressure relief. But what if you’re a side sleeper that likes the reassuring feeling of a firmer foundation? The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid may be your ideal match. Mark, an exclusive side sleeper, was pleased with its no-frills construction and medium-firm surface. “I really like when I lay down on my side on this bed,” he said, adding that “it doesn’t sacrifice support or pressure relief.”
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has five layers that stack up to a height of 11.5 inches. The thickness of each layer depends on which version of the bed you order (Soft, Medium or Firm).
- Layer 1 – Quilted Top. A breathable quilted top that stays taut and cozy, rather than retaining your body impressions.
- Layer 2 – Supreme Response Foam. This layer reforms around your silhouette each time you change position.
- Layer 3 – VariFlex™ Foam. This material enhances the support beneath the comfort foam and serves as a transitional layer between the upper part of the bed and its coil unit below.
- Layer 4 – Coil Unit. The 8-inch springs in the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid are individually wrapped and stronger around the mattress’s perimeter. They’re anchored by a high-density foam base.
For an additional fee, you can outfit this bed with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover and pillow top, which should contribute to both temperature regulation and overall plushness.
Customer Reviews of The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

100 nightsWhat Should Side Sleepers Look For in a Mattress?
Side sleepers have specific needs when it comes to their comfort and the components of their mattress. If you tend to sleep on your side, you might be wondering what are the most important factors to consider when shopping for a bed. Well, we’re going to go through plenty of categories and cut through the drivel.
Type of Mattress
The best mattress type for side sleepers will depend on a variety of factors. Here’s an overview of the most common types and who they might work for.
Innerspring Mattress
Innerspring constructions bring a significant amount of value to your mattress because of the convenience that they provide. First of all, the overall breathability and airflow of these mattresses are incomparable to anything else on the market. Additionally, the best innerspring mattresses are known for being quite supportive and reliable in this particular regard.
Of course, they do have their drawbacks. For instance, if the coils are not individually wrapped, you may not get the same level of individualized tailoring or pressure relief.
So, is this a good side sleeper option? Overall, some traditional innerspring mattresses may not be the best choice. The reason for this is simple – they bring in significant support, but there is a definitive lack of conformity in some models. This could put more pressure on specific points, and that’s not something that you ought to consider.
Hybrid Mattress
Hybrids are a great solution for shoppers who have their eye on a bed with a built-in coil unit.
A hybrid mattress combines the reliable support brought by the steel coil system with more layers of foam for pressure relief and added comfort. The type of foam in these beds varies, but side sleepers will likely prefer hybrids with high-quality memory foam layers on top.
Hybrids are also beneficial because they’re more breathable than all-foam models. While many include cooling features in the cover and foam layers, the spring unit also provides added airflow to keep hot sleepers comfortable. So, if you’re a side sleeper that needs more help to stay cool throughout the night, a hybrid could be a good fit.
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam is often the most popular choice when it comes to side sleepers. The best memory foam mattresses offer specific benefits that are especially advantageous to this sleep style.
Contouring and pressure relief are important features side sleepers need to get from their bed. Memory foam is touted as a top material for body-conforming and pressure relief, which is why it’s often recommended for side sleepers. That being said, you’ll need to make sure the memory foam mattress you select is up to snuff.
The softness should be adequate, but support should not be compromised. Lastly, hot sleepers should make sure the memory foam comes with cooling additives like gel or copper, as foams can trap heat.
Latex Mattress
Lying on your side tends to produce the most pressure points because this narrow surface area is bearing your full body weight. To relieve pressure, foam tends to reign supreme, but some foams, especially traditional memory foam, might make you feel trapped or too hot. Latex is in many new products because of its ability to address pressure points without holding your body in place or overheating.
The best latex mattresses are typically buoyant and allow lots of air to flow through them – qualities that help latex beds remain temperature neutral and easy to move around on. Since the material is quick-responding, it should immediately spring right back into its original shape. If you are a combination sleeper or an otherwise active sleeper, these constructions make repositioning easier. This is also helpful for those with mobility issues, who may have more difficulty getting in and out of bed. Furthermore, the bounciness of latex mattresses can be advantageous for sexually-active couples who prefer this feature in their bed.
Not all latex is created equal and, depending on how it is processed, it can produce a remarkably different feel to suit different preferences and budgets. You can choose naturally-sourced latex produced from rubber tree sap or synthetic blends that tend to be more affordable. The Talalay process produces foam considered to be more luxurious because of its consistency and lightness, while the heavier Dunlop latex is processed more naturally and may contain fewer chemicals.
Suitable Weight Capacity
Side sleepers will find that their experience of a bed differs greatly depending on their body weight.
Heavier folks may prefer a firmer mattress because it will resist an unpleasant sinking feeling. They’ll also need a bed with a weight capacity that will comfortably accommodate them, especially if they sleep with a partner.
That being said, they may still want an initially plush surface to the bed that cushions their shoulders and hips. The key is finding the right balance of softness and support.
Thankfully, many brands have developed mattresses for heavy people that boast sturdy foundations, a firmer baseline feel, and meticulously developed support elements.
More petite side sleepers, on the other hand, will want to look at soft beds that make pressure relief their top priority. Lightweight people are very sensitive to unyielding surfaces, and may feel that a medium-firm bed is a bit too hard for them.
Firmness
Side sleepers also need to be mindful of mattress firmness, which is distinct from mattress support.
A bed that’s not firm enough will allow your body to press too deeply into it, therefore throwing off your spinal alignment and placing more pressure on your joints. On the other hand, a bed that’s too firm will feel uncomfortable and unyielding around the shoulders and hips.
Side sleepers usually go for mattresses on the softer side of our firmness scale as these beds cushion the body’s pressure points. In terms of numbers, a soft bed at a firmness rating of 3 or 4 can work for lightweight sleepers, while average- and heavyweight folks may like a medium mattress at a rating of 5 or 6. But your personal preference may differ from our recommendations, so it’s important to figure out what balance will feel best for you.
Cooling
When shopping for a mattress as a side sleeper, be sure to look at each model’s cooling features. For example, memory foam mattresses might be infused with gel or other cooling materials such as graphite or copper. Latex foam is usually quite breathable, and the coil units in innerspring and hybrid mattresses promote airflow.
Mattress covers can also help with cooling, whether they incorporate high-tech temperature-regulating materials or fabrics that breathe.
Motion Isolation
Sleeping with a partner can bring comfort, but if they toss and turn a lot the motion that they create can be distributive. Fortunately, for side sleepers, the types of mattresses that are great for their preferred sleep position and for isolating motion match up well.
To relieve pressure from the shoulders and hips, side sleepers are typically served well by the gentle contouring of memory foam. Memory foam mattresses also do an excellent job at keeping your partner’s movement contained to their side of the bed.
Sex
Side sleepers put a lot of weight on their shoulders and hips through the night, and this can cause pressure to build up. While mattresses made from slow-moving and contouring memory foam are nice for addressing that pressure buildup, they aren’t known for their responsiveness or bounce, which are two factors that make a mattress good for sex.
If you are a sexually active side sleeper, you may want to try out a memory foam hybrid for more bounce or a Talalay latex bed that is both soft and responsive.
Contouring
Contouring refers to the mattress material conforming to the shape of your body when you lie down. A mattress with high contouring capabilities will mold to your silhouette, almost embracing you as you relax into it. This feature is especially important for side sleepers, as it helps relieve pressure around the shoulders and hips.
Of course, different mattresses will have different levels of contouring prowess. Some will compress deeply and contour impressively, whereas others might prioritize responsiveness over contouring.
A firm mattress is likely to provide less contouring than a soft one. Memory foam beds are often considered the contouring champions, as this material molds handily around anyone (or anything) exerting force on top of it. Innerspring beds, on the other hand, do not contour nearly as well.
Pressure Relief
As much as people enjoy sleeping on their sides, there’s no denying that it causes a buildup of pressure around two key areas: the shoulders and hips. The downward force that side sleeping exerts on these relatively small zones can lead to discomfort and pain.
Therefore, a bed that suits side sleepers needs to be excellent at pressure relief. Its comfort layers should be able to absorb the pressure from these “sharp” parts of the body, resulting in a feeling of relaxation rather than strain on your joints or too much resistance from the mattress.
Mattresses made with foams and plush pillow tops lead the way in the pressure-relief department. Look for a bed that emphasizes its softness and its ability to cradle the pressure points that are most relevant to side sleepers.
Edge Support
For those who share a bed with a partner or simply like to utilize the entire bed, edge support is an important component. Considering that side sleepers may lie near the perimeter of the bed, they will likely want a bed that makes them feel secure.
Innerspring mattresses are a great choice for exceptional edge support since they often have reinforced coils on the outside for extra stability. However, these beds don’t offer the kind of pressure relief that side sleepers need.
Certain memory foam mattresses use denser foam around the edge of the bed to help provide security. Memory foam hybrids are also a great option to get the sturdiness of coil support along the edges with the pressure-relieving capabilities of memory foam.

Budget
When shopping for a new mattress as a side sleeper, look for models that have the pressure-relieving qualities you need at a price you can afford.
Don’t skimp when it comes to ensuring the repute of the materials. The comfort and support layers should be durable and, if possible, certified by distinguished outside organizations like CertiPUR-US®.
There are also considerations outside of craftsmanship and materials that might drive up the cost of a mattress. A direct-to-consumer online sales model can save you thousands on a mail-order bed, as their supply chain is much shorter. Oftentimes, a bed travels directly from a factory right to your door. Beds that compress and roll into boxes also save the companies on storage and shipping.
The takeaway? Evaluate your sleep priorities, and shop for a product that delivers in these categories. You might find you spend a lot less money than you originally budgeted.

Benefits of Sleeping on Your Side
Sleeping on your side comes with some useful benefits that could improve your rest and overall health.
- Could aid digestion and reduce acid reflux1 (left side) – If you’re struggling with uncomfortable acid reflux, considering switching to your side.
- Alleviates snoring2 – For those sleeping next to a snorer or who snore themselves, side sleeping could reduce snoring by helping to keep the airways open.
- Supports the glymphatic system3 – The glymphatic system is responsible for “cleansing” the brain. Sleeping on your side could aid this process and boost brain health
- Better for pregnant women4 (left side) – The American Pregnancy Association recommends that pregnant people sleeping on their left side to boost circulation and the flow of nutrients to the placenta and baby.
Sleep apnea, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is one of the most prevalent sleep disorders. OSA is a condition where the upper airways collapse, causing the sleeper to stop breathing during the night. Snoring is one of the symptoms of OSA. Healthcare specialists with Johns Hopkins Medicine say that side sleeping can mitigate mild OSA symptoms by helping prevent the upper airway from collapsing.2
Of course, there are also challenges associated with sleeping on your side. When you’re considering the benefits, make sure not to forget to weigh in the side effects and potential risks as well.
Side Sleeping Tips
Side sleeping is the most common position. However, it can sometimes result in pressure build-up. Here’s what side sleepers can do to rest more comfortably.
- Put a pillow between your legs – A firm pillow can prevent the collapse of the knee and hip joints, promoting better spine alignment and making side sleeping more comfortable.
- Avoid keeping your head down – Your ears and shoulders should be in line. Tucking your chin can result in neck pain.
- Use one pillow – Many people like sleeping on one large and one small pillow. While this may feel comfortable at first, it’s likely to result in neck pain.
- Get the right mattress firmness – Most side sleepers benefit from a mid-range firmness. This means a mattress that’s not too soft or firm should be the best for this sleeping position.
- Invest in a good pressure-relieving mattress – When you sleep on your side, your weight is concentrated in the hip and shoulder. This added pressure can become uncomfortable if you don’t have a mattress that alleviates the excess pressure. Look for mattresses with good pressure-relieving materials like memory foam or softer Talalay latex.

Mattress Considerations for Side Sleepers with Pain
Side sleeping can cause pain and other bothersome symptoms if you don’t maintain healthy spinal alignment or consider other unique needs and conditions your body might have. Buying the right kind of mattress can assist with aches you have as a side sleeper—but remember, your first stop for diagnosing and treating pain should be your doctor.
Side Sleeping with Hip and Shoulder Pain
Hip pain is especially common and bothersome in many side sleepers. In this position, you’re putting a lot of weight on your hip. Your shoulders are also another place that can dig into the mattress and cause pain. In these areas, it’s easy for pressure to build up.
If you’re experiencing pain like this now, it’s usually caused by two things: a too-firm mattress or a mattress that doesn’t promote the proper sleeping posture—maybe even both. A good mattress for side sleepers should work to alleviate pressure buildup by being soft enough to allow a comfortable sinkage while still supporting you.

Side Sleeping with Neck Pain
When side sleeping with improper spinal alignment, the pressure can build on your neck, causing unpleasant stiffness and achiness in the morning. It could also affect blood flow through the neck, cutting off vital circulation for the restorative effects of sleep. This could also cause you to wake with numbness and tingling in your arms or other extremities.
So, what can be done? It’s important to find a bed that keeps your body in the proper position. This requires a strong support system with some form of zoning, whether that be in the coil unit or in the foam layers. A too-firm or too-soft mattress will cause your neck to lay out of alignment. Find a bed that keeps your spine straight by allowing your hips and shoulders to dip comfortably while elevating your head.
There’s more you can do without buying a whole new mattress. The combination of a pressure-relieving mattress and a lofty pillow could go a long way in correcting spinal alignment and reducing neck pain.
For additional options, see our roundup for the best mattresses for neck pain and most comfortable mattresses.
Side Sleeping with Back Pain
Back pain could also be the result of an inappropriate mattress combined with the awkwardness of the side sleeping position. If the mattress is too plush, this can cause your lower back to sink in deeper, as that’s where more weight is being concentrated. On the other hand, if it’s too firm, this could cause serious discomfort, especially if you’re lightweight.
With all this in mind, you need to consider is the density of the foam and the softness of the mattress. Ideally, a good mattress for back pain hugs you without making you feel trapped in it. You’re looking for a combination of softness and support to keep your spine neutral while relieving pressure.

Best Mattress for Side Sleepers FAQs
Is it healthier to sleep on your side?
Side sleeping is considered one of the healthiest positions, and sleeping on your left side is believed to be more beneficial than sleeping on the right. This is especially true during pregnancy as it improves blood flow between the uterus, heart, fetus, and kidneys. However, either side can offer benefits like chronic back pain relief, pressure relief, reduced snoring, and better spine alignment1.
What are the best pillows for side sleepers?
Choosing the right mattress is the first step to sleeping better on your side. The next step is finding the best pillow for side sleepers to further support your spine in this position, particularly in the neck and shoulders.
When deciding on the right product, you have to consider factors such as the loft (height), what it’s made with, how supportive it is, and any other features such as cooling or use for certain health conditions.
Pillows can come in a variety of materials, including memory foam, latex, buckwheat, down, bamboo, and cotton – each of which has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.
According to Harvard Health2, individuals who regularly rest on their side should use a pillow that is higher under the neck than the head. While support is good, they add that you should avoid pillows that are too firm or high as these could cause stiffness and pain.
What is the best mattress topper for side sleepers?
If your bed is too soft or firm for you, you can add a mattress topper to adjust the bed’s feel. Look for a mattress topper with a medium firmness, providing pressure relief and contouring that your mattress lacks. You’ll also need to consider the thickness and density of the topper. A thicker topper can provide more cushioning, and a denser material will deliver more support and longevity.
What is the best mattress firmness for side sleepers?
Most side sleepers like soft and medium-firm mattresses because of their pressure relief, contouring, and support. Soft mattresses provide the most pressure relief, but these may only give enough support for lightweight sleepers. Furthermore, soft beds may not be the best if you share the bed with someone who doesn’t sleep on their side. Medium and medium-firm beds are also good for side sleepers and often better for those who sleep with a partner as they’re more versatile.
Is edge support important for side sleepers?
Edge support refers to how supportive the mattress is along the perimeter of the bed. Good edge support allows you to take advantage of the full surface space of the mattress and makes getting in and out of bed easier.
As a side sleeper, you may frequently use the edge of your mattress, and if this is the case, make sure that whichever bed you choose scores well for this feature. Some manufacturers use denser foam along the perimeter, while others may use reinforced coils for strong edges.
Are hybrid mattresses better for side sleepers?
Whether a hybrid mattress is better for side sleepers ultimately depends on the particular hybrid and the individual sleeper’s needs. For example, if the sleeper is a heavier person, they could benefit from the extra support of a hybrid. Between hybrids and traditional innerspring models, though, hybrids would be better for side sleepers because they have more foam in them to cushion the shoulder and hip.
Are memory foam mattresses good for side sleepers?
As a general rule, yes! Memory foam mattresses provide a ton of pressure relief by allowing you to sink into its surface. You’ll want a memory foam mattress with the right support too, though, so consider looking at options that have a firm base foam—even some with zoning in its layers to keep your spine aligned.
