Testing the Best Mattresses for Couples

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. Our diverse cast of testers allows for us to find out how a bed performs in all sleeping positions and for different body types.

We then work to share our results in an easy-to-understand format, without any of the industry jargon or biases. Our reviews aim to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

For the best mattresses for couples, we prioritized certain performance categories that should work for those who sleep with a partner. More on that below.

Our lead product testers, Julia Forbes and Loren Bullock hands on mattress testing.

What We Want to See in the Best Beds for Couples

If you share the bed with your beloved, there’s more to consider than just if it’s big enough to fit the both of you. Here’s what we considered when we began our search for these beds:

Absorbs motion

We’re going to be talking a lot about motion absorption, motion isolation, and motion transfer. All of these words have to do with whether or not you can feel your partner moving from your side of the bed. Basically, a great bed for couples will have good motion isolation–meaning it absorbs motion so it doesn’t transfer, leaving you both with uninterrupted sleep.

The best beds for motion isolation will usually have thick foam comfort layers on top, but some spring beds can do surprisingly well.

Strong edges

Space is crucial when you share the bed, and some couples may want to spread out toward the edges rather than cuddle close together–no judgment either way! If you want to maximize space for sleeping or anything else you do in bed, you’ll need a mattress with a strong perimeter. This way, the edges won’t sag under your weight as you lay or sit on them.

Firmness that works well for most

It’s unlikely that you and your partner will agree on everything, and this probably includes what feels comfortable in a mattress. We tried to find beds that have a firmness and feel that can accommodate a wide variety of sleepers with differing body types, sleeping positions, and overall preference.

Some of these beds have adjustability, while most are available in a Split King with multiple firmness models, so you and your partner don’t have to settle for compromise.

Why the Saatva Solaire Earned Best Mattress for Couples Overall

Finding a mattress that suits you and your partner can entail a certain amount of compromise—unless the bed can literally change its firmness level on each side to suit your precise preferences. The Saatva Solaire hits this mark, and its state-of-the-art adjustability has earned it the title of Editor’s Pick.

The Solaire’s primary support unit consists of air chambers made from vulcanized, elastic latex. Depending on how firm you’d like the bed, you can adjust the air level via remote control from 1 to 50. Furthermore, Solaire beds that are queen-sized or larger come with two remote controls so that each side can be adjusted separately.

Saatva Solaire Mattress

What is the Saatva Solaire Made Of?

The Saatva Solaire is 13 inches tall and has the following layers.

  • Layer 1 – Euro Top (3 inches). A foam-quilted Euro top that cushions pressure points while also offering firmer support around the lumbar region. At the very surface is an organic cotton cover.
  • Layer 2 – Natural Latex (1 inch). This sheet of hypoallergenic latex is springy and zoned to provide suitable levels of support to different areas of the body.
  • Layer 3 – Gel-Infused Memory Foam (2 inches). Memory foam molds to the contours of your body while the gel inside prevents overheating.
  • Layer 4 – Moisture Barrier. A protective layer that shields the air chambers and machinery below from moisture and germs.
  • Layer 5 – Vulcanized Air Chambers. The pressure inside these chambers changes by precise degrees as you use the Solaire’s remote to find your preferred firmness level.
  • Layer 6 – Power Edge Enclosure. A strong base that also conceals the bed’s inflation system and hoses.

Our Take: “Here’s the wonderful thing about this bed: Whatever sleeping position or firmness you like, you can adjust the mattress to achieve it.” – Michael, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons of the Saatva Solaire

What I Liked
White glove service – The Solaire is a relatively complex mattress, but you won’t have to worry about transporting or setting it up yourself. Saatva’s team handles all of that with their included white glove delivery service.
Quiet, precise function – The mechanical components of the Solaire are hidden discreetly inside its base, and operate very quietly. A grand total of 50 firmness levels also gives you meticulous control over the feel of your side of the bed.
Potential Drawbacks
It’s fancy, so it costs more – The Solaire is probably the most expensive mattress on this list. A queen-size model can be bought for around $4,500, but sales may bring that price down below $4,000.
Slight delay before consistent operation – Before the Solaire can function at its best, it needs to fully inflate and regulate its air chambers. That process can take a few days, so anticipate that you may need to adjust the firmness levels more often in your first week of owning it.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Solaire

On Saatva’s website, the reviews for the Saatva Solaire are overwhelmingly positive, coming in at 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva Solaire mattress for its adjustable firmness settings but may find its price point to be higher than expected.

How Did the Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Perform?

Motion Isolation4

Edge Support5
We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the Helix Dusk Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Couples with Different Preferences

If you and your partner really aren’t on the same page with your respective sleep styles, the Helix Dusk Luxe can help you meet in the middle. Its mid-range firmness level—about a 6.5 out of 10 on our scale—is a comfortable feel for most sleepers and therefore ideal for a shared mattress. Even if one of you sleeps on their back, and the other on their side, it should cradle both of you cozily.

Furthermore, the Dusk Luxe’s motion-dampening abilities truly impressed us during testing. We didn’t expect a hybrid to be so good at absorbing movement!

What’s the Helix Dusk Luxe Made Of?

Dig Into The Layers

The Helix Dusk Luxe is 13.5 inches tall and has six total layers.

  • Layer 1 – Cooling Pillow Top. Complete with a breathable Tencel™ cover, this pillow top’s luxurious plushness welcomes you to bed. You can also make the surface of the mattress even cooler by upgrading to a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover.
  • Layer 2 – Helix Responsive Foam. A proprietary foam with a bouncy, medium-firm feel.
  • Layer 3 – Helix Dynamic Foam. A latex-like foam that springs back into shape quickly.

Helix Dusk Mattress Construction

  • Layer 4 – Memory Plus Foam. This take on memory foam provides a balanced mix of contouring and support.
  • Layer 5 – Coils. Individually wrapped springs have been strengthened beneath the hips to promote proper spinal alignment. They’re also reinforced along the entire perimeter of the bed.
  • Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. The strong foam base of the bed.

Our Take: The Dusk Luxe was designed for versatility, and can accommodate all sleeping positions (though it may not be the best choice for plus-size sleepers). We dug its cooling features, sturdy edge support, and how well it was able to cancel out motion.

Pros & Cons of the Helix Dusk Luxe

What I Liked
Cool enough for couples – We gave this bed full marks for its cooling capabilities, which were especially notable with the GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover upgrade. The top of the bed felt refreshing and the airflow around its coil unit probably also kept the temperature regulated.
Classy coils – The springs in the Helix Luxe models are slightly fancier than those in the brand’s core collection of mattresses. They’re reinforced along the whole perimeter (rather than just the long sides), and they’re also zoned to give more lift under your hips and lower back.
Potential Drawbacks
Not for heavier folks – Unfortunately, the Dusk Luxe’s versatility doesn’t extend to the plus-sized set. We think this bed will feel too soft and lack the necessary amount of underlying support for larger bodies.
Some off-gassing – This bed gave off a chemical smell when we unpackaged it. The odor dissipated after a time, but sensitive noses may find it distasteful.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Dusk Luxe

On Helix’s website, the Dusk Luxe has an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars (and more than 1,000 reviews). Buyers appreciate the bed’s mindful balance of softness and support, though some reviewers say the edge support isn’t as strong as they’d prefer.

We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Affordable Mattress for Couples

The Nectar is one of few high-quality mattresses you can order in a queen size for less than $1,000 (while sales are running). Couples should dig its stellar motion isolation, pressure relief, and accompanying policies, which include a year-long sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

As an all-foam bed, the Nectar chose its three internal layers carefully. “They all work symbiotically,” said Julia, who’s tested this mattress multiple times. The upper two layers emphasize a comforting sink, while the base layer delivers reassuring support and stability.

Nectar Mattress logo Sleep Advisor

What’s the Nectar Made Of?

The Nectar is 12 inches high and has five total layers if you count its top and bottom covers.

Dig Into the Mattress Construction

Testing the layers and construction of the nectar mattress

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. Made with polyethylene fibers that can help with cooling, the top cover protects the inner foam layers.
  • Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches). Foam that molds to the curvature of your body and resists heat buildup thanks to an infusion of cooling gel.
  • Layer 3 – Dynamic Response Foam (3 inches). A transitional layer that adds a degree of bounce and support to the bed.
  • Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Base Foam (7 inches). This thick and sturdy layer serves as the bed’s foundation.
  • Layer 5 – Lower Cover. A polyester cover that keeps all the layers aligned and contained.

Our Take: “Since these layers are pretty dense, they’re able to stifle the feeling of motion pretty well. If you sleep with a partner and move around a lot, this helps ensure you’re not shaking them awake. They also do a pretty good job with pressure relief, keeping the most sensitive joints from feeling all of the weight bearing down on them.” – Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Pros & Cons of the Nectar

What We Liked
Cancels movement – “The Nectar offers excellent motion isolation, which is always a plus for couples,” Julia said. “Partners with different sleeping habits should appreciate the bed’s ability to absorb the ripple effects of movement.”
Cradles the joints – Julia felt like her pressure points were well-cushioned by the Nectar’s comfort layers, which have the hug-like feeling of classic memory foam but don’t cause you to sink so low that you feel stuck.
Potential Drawbacks
Still holds onto heat – Even with its gel infusions and cooling cover, the Nectar isn’t exactly a cooling mattress. Per Julia, a hybrid bed will always win in this category.
Too much sinkage for some – Stomach sleepers and plus-size people probably won’t find the support they need in the Nectar. While on her stomach, Julia noted that her lumbar zone dipped down too far for comfort during testing.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

How Did the Emma Hybrid Comfort Perform?

Motion Isolation3.5

Pressure Relief4
Edge Support3.5
We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Firm Mattress for Couples

If both you and your partner are fans of a firmer bed, the Emma Hybrid Comfort is a highly supportive (and cost-efficient) option. “Spine alignment is where this mattress excels,” said my fellow lead product tester, Julia Forbes. “The firm surface is good at spreading out your body weight evenly and keeping the spine lifted.”

Because this bed feels firmer than average, we recommend it for back and stomach sleepers in particular—side sleepers may find it too unyielding.

What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is 13 inches tall and has seven layers (if you include its upper and lower cover).

Dig Into the Mattress Construction

Looking at the Emma Hybrid Construction in the lab

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. A lightweight, moisture-wicking cover.
  • Layer 2 – Airgocell® Foam. A pressure-relieving foam that relies on the air pockets throughout its structure to stay cool.
  • Layer 3 – Memory Foam. A thin layer of memory foam provides motion absorption and a bit of contouring.
  • Layer 4 – HRX (High Resiliency Extra) Foam. A firm, bracing foam.
  • Layer 5 – Coils. Zoned and individually wrapped springs offer specialized amounts of resistance depending on their location.
  • Layer 6 – Foam Base. A durable foundation.
  • Layer 7 – Lower Cover. Outfitted with handles for easy transportation, the lower cover protects the inner layers of the bed.

Our Take: “You get a good responsive feel from the coils, but not a whole lot of sink on a surface level. This is really appealing for those who need solid back support because of the good weight distribution and spine alignment the bed offers.” – Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Pros & Cons of the Emma Hybrid

What I Liked
Firm enough for stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need to be sure that their mattress will keep their hips lifted, thereby giving their spine a neutral alignment. Only firmer beds are up to the challenge, and the Emma Hybrid Comfort is a prime example.
Easy on the wallet – “The Emma Hybrid Comfort is kind of a standout for budget shoppers,” Julia said. When it’s on sale, you can snag it for less than $1,000.
Potential Drawbacks
Noisy foam – “The foam on the surface felt a bit odd to me,” Julia recalled. “It’s almost like I was moving around on compressed packing peanuts—[and] it made that noise too.” The sound wasn’t very loud, but if you’re a light sleeper, it might be disruptive.
Too firm for side sleepers – Even though our pressure map showed that this mattress didn’t promote pressure buildup, side sleepers and petite folks will probably wish for more plushness than it provides. “It’s simply not cushy enough, according to our lightweight testers,” Julia reported.

Customer Reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort

This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet, but early customers already rate it an impressive 5 out of 5 stars. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its excellent motion isolation, but some have reported that it may have a slight initial off-gassing odor upon unboxing.

How Did the WinkBed Mattress Perform?

Motion Isolation3
Firmness6 (Luxury Firm Model)
Pressure Relief4
Edge Support4.5
We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Mattress for Couples with Back Pain

Given its bounce, airflow, and multiple firmness options, the WinkBed is a wonderful mattress for couples no matter how you slice it. But its lumbar-focused features earned it high marks from me in the category of pain relief, which may take priority if you or your partner experience back pain.

The WinkBed’s coil unit is zoned to provide enhanced support beneath the lower back. Additionally, it has a LumbarLayer™ of foam that targets the same region. Paired with the pressure relief from the soft foam in its Euro top, these components may help ease persistent back aches.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is 13.5 inches high and comes in four firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.

Check out the Mattress Layers

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

  • Tencel™ Cover – A moisture-wicking cover made of Tencel™, which is derived from the wood of eucalyptus trees.
  • Euro Top – A gel foam Eurotop that feels immediately luxurious as you lie down.
  • Additional Foams – Motion-isolating foam and the brand’s proprietary LumbarLayer™ round out the mattress’s comfort layers.
  • Coils – The individually wrapped coils in this bed are made from recycled steel and iron. They’re zoned to provide different amounts of resistance based on their location, so areas that need more bracing than others can feel supported. The springs are also reinforced along the edges.

My Take: The WinkBed mattress comes in three firmness levels, but their Luxury Firm option should work best for couples. It balances spinal support with enough softness to cozily cradle pressure points.

Pros & Cons of the WinkBed

What I Liked
Responsive, springy feel – I like to describe the WinkBed as “buoyant,” because it definitely lifts you up rather than swaddling you. Its coils give it a bouncy feel that’s helpful for sex or for changing sleeping positions.
Sturdy edges – This mattress comes with an Extra-Edge™ Support System to ensure you don’t dip too low if you lie on the sides. This feature is great for couples, because it gives each sleeper more useable space.
Potential Drawbacks
You’ll feel some of your partner’s movements – The WinkBed isn’t very accomplished at motion isolation. During testing, I was able to feel my colleagues’ movements on the other side of the bed.
Not a budget option – Some queen-size mattresses on this list can be had for close to (or even under) $1,000 when sales are active, but that’s not the case for the WinkBed. It typically costs at least $1,500, and that’s with a hefty discount.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Active Couples

If you’re part of a particularly athletic couple, you’ll want your bed to complement your dynamic lifestyle. Bear has long marketed to athletes with a series of mattresses that encourage post-workout recuperation, including their Star Hybrid Model.

The foremost star of the Star Hybrid is perhaps its cover. It’s made with Celliant®, a performance textile that allegedly helps to promote muscle recovery. Underneath are two layers of foam and a strong innerspring unit that form a supportive foundation for sleep after an energized day.

What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Star Hybrid has five layers that stack up to 13 inches in height.

Check out the Mattress Layers

Take a closer look at the Bear Star Hybrid mattress construction

  • Layer 1 – Cover. A hand-quilted cover combines HydroCool® cooling technology with Celliant® fibers that could up the efficiency of your post-workout recovery.
  • Layer 2 – Serene Gel Foam. A pressure-relieving layer of contouring foam.
  • Layer 3 – Responsive Comfort Foam. A springy foam that reacts quickly when you move atop the bed.
  • Layer 4 – Coils. Individually wrapped coils that have been reinforced along the bed’s edges.
  • Layer 5 – High-Density Support Foam. A grounding base for the entire bed.

Our Take: This is a firmer-feeling bed that prioritizes spine alignment, support, and cooling. Our tester Stuart thought it was extremely versatile and would suit most sleeping positions, even if its edges were a bit weaker than he expected.

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Middle-of-the-road firmness – At 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the Bear Star Hybrid feels medium-firm. This firmness can appease the widest range of sleepers, and could represent an easy compromise between members of a couple with different comfort needs.
It runs pretty cool – Due to the cooling technology in its cover, the gel in its foam, and the airflow through its coils, the Bear Star Hybrid should regulate temperature quite well. This is an important feature for couples, whose risk of overheating is heightened by the fact that they share a bed.
Potential Drawbacks
Weak edges – Stuart didn’t love the edge strength on this bed, though he didn’t think it would be a major dealbreaker. If you and your partner really need space to stretch out, consider getting a king-size model or larger.
Not super responsive – Even though it has springs at its base, the Bear Star Hybrid doesn’t have a lot of bounce to it. If you enjoy a very responsive bed, you may want to look at the other hybrids on this list.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid

Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Foam Mattress for Couples

An all-foam mattress, the Nolah Signature is one of the plushest contenders on this list. “Nolah says that this one’s a soft mattress, and oh yeah, I agree with that. It’s like a cloud,” Emma attested. Couple who want a pillowy bed will also benefit from its motion-isolating powers, which are substantial.

This mattress incorporates Nolah AirFoam™, an exclusive material with billions of microscopic air bubbles that help to evenly distribute body weight. This foam is also reputedly up to four times more effective at relieving pressure than classic memory foam.

What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?

The Nolah Signature is 12 inches thick and has five layers.

Look Into the Mattress Construction

  • Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. An unbleached organic cotton cover that keeps the top of the mattress airy and cool.
  • Layer 2 – Plush AirFoam™ (2.5 inches). A proprietary foam that molds to your body without retaining as much heat as more traditional memory foams.
  • Layer 3 – Active Response Foam (1.5 inches). A breathable foam with a lot of bounce.
  • Layer 4 – Firm AirFoam™ (1 inch). A second layer of AirFoam™ with a firmer feel that combines underlying support with even more pressure relief.
  • Layer 5 – High-Density Foam Foundation (7 inches). A stabilizing base.
  • Our Take: “For as soft as this mattress is, I actually really really like it sleeping on my stomach. Legitimately, much better than most of the soft beds I’ve tried out. With that said though, I think I’d mostly stick to sleeping on my side in this bed, just because it feels so good in that position.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons of the Nolah Signature

    What I Liked
Soothing pressure relief for side sleepers – The Nolah Signature should fit side sleepers looking for gentle cradling. The bed adapts to your body’s curves, preventing the pressure from building up in key areas. “When laying on it, it just really hugged those areas that I wanted it to,” reported Mark, an exclusive side sleeper with broad shoulders.
Support underneath the cushion – Just because the Signature is soft doesn’t mean it’ll crumple beneath you. According to Emma, “While it’s quite soft, it does have a great deal of support in the lower layers.”
    Potential Drawbacks
Too soft for plus-size folks – Sean, one of our plus-size mattress testers, found the Nolah Signature to be invitingly plush but not supportive enough overall: “It didn’t have as much support in it as I [needed], and I found that I sunk in a bit more when I was sleeping on my back and my side.”
Edges aren’t reinforced – “The edge support wasn’t as strong as I would like it to be, as someone who sleeps with a partner,” Mark noted. This element may be a dealbreaker if you share your bed and find yourself pushed to the sides a lot.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature

The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. Customers appreciate the Nolah Signature mattress for its exceptional pressure relief, but some have mentioned that it lacks the edge support they desire.

    Firmness5 (Medium Model)

    Edge Support3
We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Couples

Brooklyn Bedding’s Signature Hybrid is a high-value hybrid mattress offered at a surprisingly affordable price. It’s available in three firmness levels: Soft, Medium, or Firm. For most couples, the broadly appealing feel of the Medium model will work best at providing a healthy balance of support and pressure relief.

If you’re worried about the coils causing too much motion transfer, my fellow tester Emma should put you at ease. “Couples shouldn’t be bothered by movements across the bed unless they were really sensitive and super-light sleepers,” she said. She also rated it well in other categories deemed most helpful for couples, namely edge support and responsiveness.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is 12.25 inches tall and has five total layers. You can order it in one of three firmnesses: Soft, Medium, or Firm. Depending on the feel you choose, the thickness of the individual layers will vary.

What is the Mattress Construction like?

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Construction from the lab

    • Layer 1 – Quilted Top. A soft and breathable surface that should bounce back rather than retain a body-shaped indent.
    • Layer 2 – Supreme Response Comfort Foam. A springy foam that makes repositioning easy.
    • Layer 3 – VariFlex™ Transition Foam. A firmer foam that separates the comfort layers from the coils below.
    • Layer 4 – Coils. Individually wrapped springs comprise the bed’s strongest support layer. The coils are reinforced along the edges of the bed.
    • Layer 5 – Flex Base. A high-density foam foundation.

Our Take: “Because it’s so responsive, adjusting positions is super easy. Plus, with the supportive yet comfortable feel, this bed is super versatile for all sleeping positions … Couples should love [it].” Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid?

    What I Like
Awesome at isolating motion – Emma gave this bed unexpectedly high marks for its motion-absorbing capabilities: “Hybrids usually perform pretty average when it comes to motion transfer, but we were surprised at how well [the] Signature Hybrid isolated motion, especially for how responsive it is.”
Nice price – The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid’s price point is well below the competition’s, making this a fantastic hybrid bed for budget-savvy couples.
    Potential Drawbacks
Innerspring feel – This hybrid mattress definitely feels like a hybrid, as in, you won’t get the slow sink and swaddle you would from an all-foam bed. Some people love the lifted feeling that a hybrid gives them, but Emma commented that “if I exclusively slept on my side, I’d probably choose a softer bed.”
No extra features – “This bed doesn’t have a ton of bells and whistles,” Emma concluded. It’s a basic hybrid with all the necessities, but none of the bonus features you might want if you have more room in your budget.

Customer Reviews of the Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

How Did the Titan Plus Mattress Perform?

    Motion Isolation5
    Firmness7.5
    Pressure Relief4
    Edge Support5
We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Couples

Plus-size people need a mattress that won’t sag or distribute their weight unevenly, resulting in a loss of alignment. The Titan Plus was designed to meet these needs, whether you sleep alone or with a partner—it has a weight capacity of up to 1,000 pounds.

Its springs are extra-strong compared to competitors, but it should also relieve pressure efficiently due to the comfort foams at its surface. Couples should also appreciate its formidable edge support and motion-isolating abilities. Patrick, one of our plus-size mattress testers, was impressed by the latter: “For as much bounce as this bed has, it contains motion pretty well. Restless sleepers probably won’t wake up their sleeping partners.”

    Titan Plus pressure testing
Testing the Titan Plus in our studio.

What’s the Titan Plus Made Of?

The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall and has four layers (though this number increases to five if you pay extra for a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover).

    Dig Into the Mattress Layers

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Construction from the lab

    • Layer 1 – Gel Memory Foam (1 inch). This initial comfort layer gives you just enough sink to feel cozy.
    • Layer 2 – TitanFlex™ Foam (2 inches). An elastic foam layer that bounces back into shape easily but also relieves pressure.
    • Layer 3 – Coils (6 inches). The coils in this bed are pocketed so they compress individually, and reinforced along the perimeter.
    • Layer 4 – High-Density Foam Base (2 inches). An especially thick and durable foundation.

Our Take: “Bottom line: for all plus-size sleepers, there should be plenty of support and pressure relief regardless of your sleeping position.” – Spencer, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons of the Titan Plus

    What I Liked
Firm yet pressure-relieving – Patrick thought that the Titan Plus had just the right amount of sink before its support system took over. “There is little to no pressure build-up, and I would actually say that this mattress relieves pressure while [I’m lying on my side],” he said.
Awesome edges – “If you like to spread out, strong edges are going to be a really nice advantage,” Patrick commented. He characterized the Titan Plus’s edges as “super strong.”
    Potential Drawbacks
Will feel too firm for some – Lightweight sleepers and exclusive side sleepers may not love the firmer feel of the Titan Plus. Heavier folks, however, will perceive the bed differently. “A lot of that firmness that [a lighter person] feels will be wiped away by a heavier individual as they allow their weight to sink into the mattress,” Patrick said.
Won’t cradle you – Regardless of your weight, this is not a mattress that swaddles you in a foam embrace. Instead, it has a buoyant, lifted feel to it that you may not enjoy if you prefer to sink a lot.

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

How Did the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Perform?

    Motion Isolation4
    Firmness6.5
    Pressure Relief4
    Edge Support4
We rate categories of motion isolation, pressure relief, and support out of 5.
Firmness is measured on a scale of 1-10, with 1 feeling uber-soft and 10 being the firmest.

Why the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Earned Best Soft Mattress for Couples

Perhaps you and your partner both love a plush, pillowy bed. If that’s the case, the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid may be the perfect cloud-like sanctuary for your sleep. It comes in three firmness levels—Plush, Medium-Firm, and Firm—but even while testing the Medium-Firm version in our studio, Julia found it to be on the softer side.

The explanation for all this cushion? A total of four comfort foams beneath the bed’s cooling cover. Even though you’ll get solid support from the mattress’s coils, these foams stack up to a lovely pillow top that cradles your pressure points.

What’s the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Made Of?

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid has seven layers and stands approximately 14 inches tall.

    • Layer 1 – Cover. This cooling cover is made with fibers that allegedly draw heat away from your body.
    • Layer 2 – Quilt Foam Layer (2 inches). This cozy foam is also gel-infused for additional cooling.
    • Layer 3 – Comfort Layer (1.5 inches). Another soft foam layer that also encourages airflow.
    • Layer 4 – Responsive Layer (1 inch). A bouncy memory foam that combines pressure-relieving abilities with responsive support.
    • Layer 5 – Transitional Layer (1 inch). A final foam layer that delineates the transition into the coil unit.
    • Layer 6 – Coils (8 inches). A zoned spring unit that provides enhanced lift beneath the hips and lumbar spine. The coils are also reinforced along the edges.
    • Layer 7 – High-Density Foam Base (0.75 inches). A strong bottom layer for stability.

Our Take: “The lumbar zone gets plenty of lift, and you have a nice mattress surface that lightly hugs around the body.” – Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Pros & Cons of the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid

    What I Liked
Multiple firmness options – Julia tested the Medium-Firm version of this mattress and found it quite versatile, but if you want an even softer bed, you could try the Plush model. There’s also a Firm variant if you value more palpable support.
Versatile feel and responsiveness – If you shift positions throughout the night, this bed reacts accordingly—its foams compress and reform with impressive responsiveness. “Combo sleepers should find this bed quite amicable for any position they turn to,” Julia said.
    Cons
Dedicated stomach sleepers should look elsewhere – “Combo sleepers that frequent their stomachs would be a better candidate [for this mattress] over true stomach sleepers,” Julia commented. As a stomach sleeper herself, she felt a slight amount of worrisome dipping around her belly in this position.
Could be cooler – Even though it has “Chill” in its name and cooling fibers in its cover, Julia didn’t think this bed felt particularly cool. She didn’t overheat during testing, but she didn’t notice a temperature drop, either.

Customer Reviews of the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Leesa’s website. Customers value the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid for its excellent temperature regulation and comfort, but some mention it’s less effective for side sleepers due to its firmness.

What to Look for in a Mattress for Couples

Like any big purchase you make with a partner, buying a mattress should begin with a discussion of your respective wants and needs. Multiple factors that can impact how well you’ll sleep on your new bed, and you’ll want to consider each of them as you narrow down your choices.

    Type of Mattress

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials
    Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses can be a good fit for couples who want a lot of responsiveness and bounce from their bed. Their coil units also promote cooling and airflow.

However, more traditional innerspring models may not have enough comfort layers above the springs to feel cozy, and their motion-isolating capabilities are limited — especially if the springs in the mattress are interconnected.

    Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses are perhaps the most versatile and adaptable option for couples. They have a coil unit as their supportive foundation, topped with comfort layers that are typically made of different kinds of foam.

This blend of materials allows for a lot of customization. With a hybrid bed, couples can attain their desired degree of pressure relief, springiness, motion isolation, edge support, and more.

One of the only negatives to consider is the price — because hybrid mattresses are some of the most advanced on the market, they can be more expensive than all-foam or traditional innerspring beds.

    Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses can be good for couples, especially those who prioritize pressure relief and motion isolation.

Foam mattresses tend to be the best at limiting motion transfer across the bed’s surface. So, if someone tosses and turns or gets up during the night, they’re less likely to disturb the person sleeping next to them.

At the same time, foam mattresses without a lot of cooling features tend to run hot, and their compressive surfaces may lead some couples to feel “stuck” or embedded in the mattress. Consider whether you like to feel “hugged” by your bed or buoyed up by it before opting for a memory foam model.

    Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses tend to perform well for couples. That’s because latex foam is a naturally breathable material with a bit more responsiveness than poly foams (such as memory foam). Therefore, it can stay cool and relieve pressure, all while providing enough bounce for easier movement.

One drawback to latex mattresses is that they’re a bit more costly than other types. Couples who want to purchase eco-friendly products may need to conduct extra research on latex beds, as some are more sustainably sourced and processed than others.

    Mattress Size

First things first, the bed must have enough room and space for both of you. If your partner’s late-night tossing and turning is a problem for you, maybe it is time to look for a bigger bed.

The ideal mattress size for an average couple is a Queen, but you can opt for a King or California King-size bed if both of you need your own space while sleeping.

    Fits Various Sleeping Positions

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper

Many couples may have different preferred sleeping positions, which can make it more difficult to find a mattress that supports both of your needs.

    Side Sleepers

Side sleepers do best with a mattress that’s geared towards pressure relief. This is usually a softer bed, but it still has to bring the support to keep their spines aligned. For example, if you’re of a heavier weight, you might prefer something closer to medium to ensure you’re getting that support. Side sleepers might also enjoy a foam mattress best, or a hybrid with thicker foam comfort layers.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers require a supportive bed that isn’t too firm or too soft. So, there’s usually most comfortable on a medium or medium-firm bed. Like side sleepers, they need a balance of support and pressure relief, and should find a bed that keeps their spine straight.

    Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers are the “problem child.” These folks benefit from a firm mattress that can prevent their hips from sagging too far down in the bed. A too-soft mattress can throw their spine and neck out of alignment and cause pain to build up.

    Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers rotate between positions. What’s important for them is a bed that allows them to move around without feeling “stuck.” Therefore, they should look for beds that have a responsive surface, usually that are underlaid with springs.

    Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

    Lightweight SleepersAverage-weight SleepersHeavyweight Sleepers
    < 160 lbs160 lbs – 230 lbs> 230 lbs

Many couples will bring different body weights to their bed and this can make it difficult to find a mattress that works for both people. Fortunately, medium or medium-firm mattresses work well for most people and are a great compromise for couples.

However, if one person weighs considerably more than the other one, it might be helpful to invest in a mattress designed for plus-size sleepers or at least a highly supportive hybrid.

It’s also important to pay attention to a mattress’s weight capacity–both for the bed overall and the maximum weight it can support on each side. If a bed isn’t made to support you, it also won’t feel comfortable.

    Firmness Customization

The next step is to decide whether you prefer a hard, medium, or soft feel. This decision depends on your body type and favorite sleeping position. But for couples, they may want to consider an adaptive firmness, which has a supposed “universal” feel that can work for most sleepers. This is usually a medium feel, the middle of the road. However, if you and your partner are similar in body type and sleep style, you might find that a softer or firmer option is better for you both.

If you can’t compromise, the better option might be a split mattress. As the name implies, it’s actually two different mattresses put together. For a Split King, it’s often two Twin XL beds. This way, you can customize each bed to ensure it tailors to your specific needs. This can be especially helpful if you’re of two different weights, prefer different sleeping positions, or have a certain condition that requires a specialized mattress.

    Sex

If you’re a sexually active couple, you’ll want to get a mattress that’s conducive to intimacy. The best mattresses for sex are highly responsive (i.e. bouncy), have excellent edge support (which enables you to use all of the bed’s surface area), and stay cool.

Hybrid and latex mattresses tend to strike this balance of features well, but you’ll want to make sure that the mattress is just as fit for sleeping as it is for intercourse. Look for a mattress that has the above traits, plus your desired firmness level and any other important attributes you need for quality sleep.

    Budget

Although the price of a mattress does not always reflect on its quality, the cheaper brands might lack appropriate pressure point relief and durability when compared to the slightly higher-priced options.

While couples may spend more money than solo sleepers because they need a larger mattress size, shopping online, particularly during major holiday sales, can help you save more money on a top-notch bed.

    Noise

A noisy bed can disturb your sleep, and it can draw unwanted attention during intimate moments. Therefore, couples should consider beds that keep the noise level down at all times.

Memory foam and latex are both quiet materials, and couples may want to consider those if they are concerned about a loud bed. The coils in innerspring and hybrids may start to squeak over time.

Another factor to consider when it comes to noisy beds is the frame or base. You will want to make sure that it is assembled correctly and maintained properly to help prevent your bed from making too much noise.

    Durability

Since this mattress is supporting two people, you’re going to want it to last a long time. Generally, low-quality mattresses are going to be on the lower end of the price scale. They’re good budget options, but not the best if you’re looking for a long-term option.

The best durable mattresses are those built with high-quality materials and a solid support system. Generally, folks believe beds that feature springs can outlast memory foam, which might be a good rule to go by; but if you want to split hairs, it comes down to the density and quality of materials.

For more, you can check out our suggestions for the best mattresses that won’t sag.

    Adjustable Bases

An adjustable base or bed frame is a great way to upgrade your mattress if you’re sharing it with a partner. It can be useful if one of you snores or likes reading before heading to sleep. Each side can have its own elevation at the head or foot of the bed, ensuring both you and your partner are comfortable. Some even offer extra bonus features like massage.

Look for a Good Mattress Warranty

A good rule to follow for all mattress shopping is read the fine print. For couples, a warranty can tell you how long a bed is supposed to last and what kind of investment you’re getting into. It can also let you know how you can get reimbursed if there’s any deterioration.

How We Tested the Best Beds for Couples

    Motion Isolation

Excellent motion isolation is an important feature for many couples. Motion isolation means the bed keeps movement from one side of the bed from transferring to the other side. For example, if one partner tosses and turns a lot, this could disturb the other person if they’re a light sleeper, but a motion-isolating bed should reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Memory foam beds are great for this, as are hybrids that have memory foam layers and individually wrapped coils, which are better at motion isolation than continuous coils.

    WinkBed pressure relief testing
    WinkBed motion isolation seismograph
    Seismograph test for the WinkBed

How do we test motion isolation? We actually use a seismograph app to measure how much movement is picked up during a disturbance. Bigger waves generally mean larger, more noticeable motion transfer. For good motion isolation, we want to see small waves closer to a straight line. We also have two testers lie side-by-side for some hands-on assessment.

    Edge Support

People who sleep together often like to utilize the entire surface of the mattress. If your bed doesn’t have good edge support, it can mean that both people find themselves in the middle of the bed.

Furthermore, beds that lack sturdiness around the outside may make you feel like you’re falling out of bed if one or both of you get too close to the edge. This lack of support can also make it difficult for those with mobility issues to get in and out of bed easily. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to have excellent edge support, and many foam mattresses are now implementing stiffer foam around the perimeter to give people a sense of security.

    Saatva Classic edge support test
Testing out the Saatva Classic’s edge support

How do we test edge support? We test edge support in two positions: lying down on the edge, and sitting on the edge to tie our shoes. In both these tests, we observe how much the mattress dips under our weight as well as how stable we felt doing each task.

    Cooling

Not overheating when you’re sleeping is a crucial component of a quality night of rest for many people, but this is particularly true when you have the body heat of two people in one bed. Therefore, a bed with cooling properties is helpful for couples.

Latex, latex hybrid, and innerspring mattresses are great options when it comes to regulating temperature. Latex is a naturally cool material and the coils found in hybrid and innerspring mattresses allow for air to flow freely.

Memory foam has a tendency to run hot, but manufacturers have taken note of this and many of them now infuse the foam with gel or use other cooling technologies to keep sleepers cool throughout the night.

Temperature gun testing for BB signature hybrid
Temperature test for the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

How do we test cooling? For testing how well a mattress can cool down, we bring out the temperature guns. First, we take a reading of the mattress after it’s set up. Then, another after we’ve laid down in it for five minutes, then a final reading five minutes later. Witnessing the change in temperature allows us to determine whether the bed absorbs and traps heat or is able to dissipate it. We also corroborate with our first-hand experience–e.g., if it felt cool to us, not just the temperature gun.

    Pressure Relief

A great mattress should be able to relieve pressure that can accumulate in certain areas when you lie down to sleep. Therefore, couples will want to look for a mattress that provides good pressure relief so that they can wake free of pain.

In this case, couples should look at memory foam and latex mattresses, as well as hybrids made from those materials. Latex and memory foam both do very well in preventing pressure from building up throughout the night.

Julia Forbes testing a mattress for pressure relief

How do we test pressure relief? You can see in the above picture that we get high-tech when it comes to testing pressure relief. We lay on top of a pressure map on the mattress, and we’re able to record how much pressure builds up in certain areas. This lets us know if the bed is relieving pressure or actually making it worse. We test out every sleeping position and a variety of body types to figure out how the bed relieves pressure.

    Pain Relief

With pressure relief comes pain relief. Most pain after sleeping is caused by a mattress that doesn’t support you, and too often than not, it’s a mattress that allows pressure to build up in vulnerable areas like your shoulders, hips, or neck.

Shoulder pain and hip pain are most often experienced by side sleepers on a too-firm mattress. You’re going to need a bed that’s soft enough to cradle these areas, rather than prevent them from comfortably sinking.

Back pain is common for a lot of sleepers. The main culprit is a misaligned spine. This can happen because a bed is either too soft or too firm. Make sure you have the correct firmness based on your preferred sleeping position, or else your spine won’t be comfortably straight.

Similarly, neck pain happens when your spine is out of alignment. You’ll need a bed that relieves pressure but also brings crucial support. You might also consider finding a pillow with the right loft for your sleeping position.

    Best Mattress for Couples FAQs

What’s the best mattress for motion isolation?

Memory foam does an excellent job of isolating motion. The slow-moving nature of this dense material does an excellent job of preventing motion from transferring from one side of the bed to the other. However, given that memory foam may make some people feel stuck, getting a hybrid that contains memory foam along with individually wrapped coils can give couples some buoyancy for easier repositioning while still reducing motion transfer.

What mattress size is best for couples?

A Queen or King-size mattress should provide enough space for most couples to sleep and spread out comfortably.

If you and your partner have different sleep or comfort preferences, you might consider getting a Split King mattress or two Twin XL mattresses positioned side-by-side.

What type of mattress is best for couples?

Hybrid mattresses are one of the best mattress types for couples, as they bring foam and spring components together in a customizable, comfortable package. This mattress type exhibits all of the key features that most couples look for in a bed, including responsiveness, edge support, motion isolation, and cooling.

That being said, the best bed for you and your partner will depend on your individual preferences. Memory foam, innerspring, and latex foam beds all have their distinct selling points and disadvantages to consider as you search for the right mattress for your relationship.

What is the best mattress thickness for couples?

Couples should prioritize mattresses that are at least 10 inches thick. You’ll want enough height to prevent the sensation of “bottoming out” or sinking too deeply into the bed, which is a more prevalent concern when two people share a mattress (instead of a single sleeper).

There’s no one thickness that guarantees your comfort, however, so be sure to inspect the mattress’s construction in addition to its thickness.

    Conclusion

All in all, investing some money in a great bedding system might be one of the best decisions you make as a couple. Also, buying a bed in a box is an excellent alternative to purchasing one from the store. It has the potential to save you a ton of time and money, and you can select from a wider range of options and sizes.

You can take advantage of a ton of information available online on each of the products before deciding. Take your time to research fellow customer reviews and satisfaction scores for further analysis before you pick one.
