How We Chose the Best Mattresses for Scoliosis
At Sleep Advisor, we test all of our mattresses in-person. Our diverse cast of testers allows for us to gather different opinions on performance for many body types and preferred sleeping positions. We pride ourselves on giving unbiased results, and you can rest assured that every mattress we recommend is one that we’ve touched and laid on.
We test things like how the bed feels, what it does well, where it fails, and find out who’s best suited to it. Then, we deliver all this information in an easy-to-understand way, without any of the rhetoric and jargon you see from mattress sites. That way, you can find the bed that works for you.
For the best mattresses for scoliosis, we focused on specific categories like spinal alignment and pressure relief. We also consulted a medical expert, Stephanie Wright (BSN, RN), to guide us in the right direction and review our picks for the best beds for scoliosis.
What We Look for in a Mattress for Scoliosis
Not all mattresses are created equal. If you’re suffering from scoliosis, it’s important that a mattress has your back, literally. Here’s an explanation of the two things the best mattress for scoliosis should provide (at a minimum):
Spinal alignment
Obviously, the positioning of your spine on a mattress is going to be incredibly important. You should look for a bed that promotes the proper alignment to keep your spine as straight as possible to not aggravate any existing pain. Beds with zoning in the coils and/or foam layers should do well to ensure your back remains lifted.
Pressure relief
But just going for the firmest mattress to lay ramrod straight on it may cause problems. You’ll want to consider a bed that can relieve pressure buildup around sensitive areas as you sink comfortably into your mattress, especially if you lay on your side or back. A mattress with not enough give can cause pain, too.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Mattress for Scoliosis Overall
The best beds for scoliosis combine the initial coziness of pressure relief with stable underlying support, and that’s the WinkBed’s speciality. It’s a hybrid mattress with a soft pillow top, foam comfort layers, and a zoned innerspring unit. Perhaps most impressively, two of my fellow testers—Sean, a plus-sized combination sleeper, and Mark, an exclusive side sleeper—both found a lot to love in this bed, despite having different body types and preferences.
Sean wanted a bed that felt sturdy and resisted sagging, but still took pressure off of his joints. Mark was looking for lots of cradling around his hips and shoulders without a dip in support. The WinkBed delivered on all of these counts, so we think it has a versatile, well-balanced construction that should absolutely suit sleepers with scoliosis.
What’s the WinkBed Made Of?
The WinkBed is 13.5 inches tall and comes in four firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.
Its Tencel™ cover wicks moisture and breathes easily as the first layer on the Euro pillow top. The pillow top is quilted with plush foam for welcoming pressure relief, and followed by additional foam layers dedicated to motion isolation and lumbar support.
The WinkBed’s coil unit is divided into zones to provide the right amount of resistance across different areas of the body. The springs are stronger along the perimeter to give the mattress excellent edge support.
What We Liked
- Tested to ensure longevity – WinkBeds uses a third-party testing organization to assess the durability of their beds, simulating years of use via robotic equipment. Sean liked how robust the mattress felt during his own testing experience: “It is literally a strong and sturdy bed,” he said.
- Choose the right firmness for you – The WinkBed is available in four different firmnesses, but the Luxury Firm will probably be the preferred feel for most people. Plus-size people may be better served by the Firm option or the Plus, which has a support system built for sleepers 300 pounds and up.
Potential Drawbacks
- Doesn’t feel like memory foam – “People who like to feel like they are sleeping in the bed may feel more like they are floating on top of this mattress,” reported Sean. If you dig the slow, sinking sensation of memory foam, the WinkBed may not be for you.
- Won’t totally absorb motion – This is a somewhat bouncy bed, and the upper layers of foam won’t completely eliminate motion transfer.
Customer Reviews of the WinkBed mattress
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Helix Midnight Luxe Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Scoliosis
Hybrid mattresses create a lovely harmony between the two elements that a standout mattress for scoliosis should offer: support and comfort. Their coils offer more support and durability than foam can by itself, while the upper foam layers add softness and pressure relief that traditional innerspring mattresses lack.
The Helix Midnight Luxe is an exemplary hybrid bed that my colleagues really enjoyed during testing. “It was completely supportive while also cradling me,” said Liz, whose experience with chronic joint pain informs her mattress reviews. “It’s conforming up top in the softer layers, and support comes from the deeper coil layer,” agreed Emma. These qualities should prove helpful to people with scoliosis, as they increase your odds of coziness and a neutral spine alignment.
What’s the Helix Midnight Luxe Made Of?
The Helix Midnight Luxe is 13.5 inches tall and has six total layers. It begins with a pillow top decked out in a breathable Tencel™ cover, though you can pay extra for a GlacioTex™ cooling variant.
Next is a layer of Helix Responsive Foam, a proprietary material that’s springier than memory foam but still cradles sensitive pressure points. It’s followed by a sheet of medium-firm Copper Gel Memory Foam. The copper inside the foam assists with temperature regulation and germ resistance.
Under that, you’ll find a layer of Memory Plus Foam. This serves as a transitional layer between the comfort foams above and the spring unit below and is denser than traditional memory foams.
The coil unit features individually wrapped springs and a reinforced zone in the center meant to boost the support beneath your lumbar spine and hips. The springs are also stronger around the mattress’s perimeter to keep the edges from dipping too low.
Finally, a base layer of DuraDense foam serves as the bed’s grounding foundation.
What We Liked
- It’s couple-friendly – Emma described this hybrid as an “excellent choice for couples.” Its medium-firm feel should accommodate a wide range of sleep styles, and it has dependable edge support, which means you can spread out without fear of the sides sagging.
- Multiple cooling elements – This mattress should outshine all-foam beds in terms of cooling. The airflow around its springs, its Tencel™ cover, and its copper-infused foams all contribute to temperature regulation.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not built for stomach sleepers – This hybrid is too cushiony for stomach sleepers, even with its zoned coil unit that lifts the hips. However, stomach sleeping isn’t recommended for people with scoliosis, so this may be a bed to consider if you’re trying to transition to sleeping on your side or back.
- Lofty profile – Sleepers with scoliosis should try to find a bed that will sit as high as the back of their knee when on its frame. This height enables them to get in and out of bed most easily. Stuart commented that the Helix Midnight Luxe “does sit up a bit high,” but he added that its height was “not really an issue for me because I am fairly tall.”
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Luxe
On Helix’s website, the mattress scores 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress for its customized support but have reported that it may not be the best option for those who prefer an exceptionally soft sleep surface.

Why the Nectar Premier Copper Earned Best Memory Foam Mattress for Scoliosis
If you’re going to get a memory foam mattress to help with scoliosis symptoms, you’ll want one that relieves pressure but doesn’t sink so far that you get stuck or compromise on support. The Nectar Premier Copper is a great choice—its many cooling technologies keep its surface at a pleasant temperature while its pillowy foams and mid-range firmness balance each other out.
Per Mark, an exclusive side sleeper, “I have broader shoulders, so I really like that pressure-relieving feel that you get in those areas on this mattress … this [bed] really did deliver.”
What’s the Nectar Premier Copper Made Of?
The Nectar Premier Copper is an all-foam bed that stands 14 inches tall and has four layers.
Its first layer is its cooling cover. The fabric of the cover incorporates copper fibers and polyethylene fibers, both of which help to dissipate heat.
The cover sits atop a 4-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam. Apart from the gel, this foam also features ActiveCool phase change material, which absorbs and redirects excess heat as its molecules change their state from solid to liquid and back again.
Underneath is a 3-inch layer of responsive foam with a bit less give and a bit more bounce. It helps to buoy your body and leads into the bed’s primary support layer: 7 inches of dense, ActiveSupport foam.
What We Liked
- Suitably soft for side sleepers – According to Emma, the foam in the Nectar Premier Copper “cuddles every curve and joint.” When you spend your nights putting a lot of pressure on your hips and shoulders, you want exactly that kind of cradling.
- It felt delightfully cool – Our testers thought that this bed had “excellent cooling,” especially for an all-foam mattress.
- Couples should sleep easy – “[This bed] could be great for couples,” said Emma. “With its extra-supportive comfort layers of foam, there is minimal motion transfer, so you can do a little happy dance without disturbing your partner while they sleep.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Edge support may be lacking – This mattress doesn’t have components that are designated for edge support, such as denser foam rails or reinforced coils.
- It’s on the pricy side – This is a luxury bed with advanced cooling tech, the cost of which is reflected in its price. “For an all-foam bed, this isn’t what we would call a budget-friendly mattress,” said Emma.
Customer Reviews of the Nectar Premier Copper
According to Nectar’s site, the Nectar Premier Copper has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Nectar Premier Copper mattress comfortable and supportive, but some have noted that it may have an initial off-gassing odor when unpacked.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Mattress for Scoliosis and Back Pain
The Saatva Classic distinguishes itself from other beds in many ways, from its double innerspring units to its white glove, no-box delivery methods. Here at Sleep Advisor, though, we think it stands out the most as a lumbar support champion. If you have scoliosis as well as back pain, it’s one of the best mattresses you can try.
The Classic has several elements that hone in on the sensitive lower-back area, ensuring that your spine feels pleasantly lifted. As a stomach sleeper, I really look for this boost around my midsection, and I loved testing this bed. My fellow tester Stuart was with me: “I [have] to shout out the tons of lumbar support,” he said.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
You can order a Saatva Classic in two different heights: 11.5 or 14.5 inches. It also comes in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm.
At the surface is a 3-inch Euro-style pillow top with a plush feel and an organic cotton cover. The pillow top’s quilting firms it up beneath the lumbar spine, and an antimicrobial treatment protects it from bacteria and other germs. Next is an isolated strip (or “crown”) of memory foam that also lifts the lumbar region.
The Classic’s support system uses a coil-on-coil design with a pocketed micro-coil unit followed by an interconnected Bonnell coil system. The more modern pocketed approach helps reduce motion transfer, while the Bonnell system increases long-term durability and reduces the risk of sagging. Also within the coils is the Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire, which further ups the support beneath your lower back.
Finally, a perimeter of high-density foam gives this mattress superior edge support.
What I Liked
- VIP touches – The Saatva Classic is never compressed into a box, and is delivered with White Glove service—that is, the delivery team will set it up in the room of your choosing. It also comes with a reassuring lifetime warranty.
- Customization means versatility – Unlike more specialized beds, the Saatva Classic can cater to almost all body and sleep types. Because you can select your preferred firmness and height for the bed, it should feel like a personalized sleep space.
Potential Drawbacks
- It doesn’t cool much – There will be airflow around the coils in this bed, but it doesn’t have dedicated cooling elements. Extremely hot sleepers may want a mattress that prioritizes temperature regulation.
- You’ll feel larger movements – Big movements, like someone getting in and out of bed, were noticeable when I tested the Saatva Classic. When you have two innerspring units, you’re going to give up some motion isolation in favor of responsiveness and bounce.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Scoliosis
Side sleepers need a more pillowy surface than back and stomach sleepers. Otherwise, their hips and shoulders may experience pressure buildup and discomfort—which are definitely not desirable if you have scoliosis, too.
At a 4 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the Nolah Signature is one of the softest mattresses we’ve tested, and its cushiony feel should be a good fit for side sleepers with scoliosis. “Nolah says that this one’s a soft mattress, and oh yeah, I agree with that,” said Emma. “It’s like a cloud.”
What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?
The Nolah Signature is 12 inches high and has five layers. It begins with an organic cotton cover on top of a 2.5-inch layer of AirFoam™—Nolah’s proprietary memory-foam alternative. According to the brand, this material is cooler, more durable, and better at relieving pressure than classic foams.
Underneath is a 1.5-inch layer of responsive foam that gives the bed some bounce and prevents the top layer from feeling so soft that you get stuck. It’s followed by a 1-inch layer of firmer AirFoam™, then a 7-inch base layer of high-density foam.
What We Liked
- Pressure-relief superstar – Our testers unanimously pointed out that this bed felt super comfortable and plush, especially on their sides. “When sleeping on my slide, I love this bed,” said Emma. “It’s like a dream. It’s like memory foam but it has a much cooler feel.”
- Absorbs motion well – “There’s virtually no motion transfer on this bed,” Emma concluded. The foam layers of the Signature dampen movement so well that you’re not likely to feel a partner shifting around next to you.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for everyone – “Overall, this bed is probably going to be best for side sleepers and people who are lighter weight,” Emma said. One of our plus-size reviewers, Sean, agreed that the Signature “didn’t have as much support in it as I did need.”
- Edge support is middling – Emma noted that she felt reasonably secure when lying near the edge of this bed, but it buckled substantially more when she sat on the edges.
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature
The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Combination Sleepers with Scoliosis
The Bear Star Hybrid has a medium-firm feel designed to provide sufficient comfort in multiple sleep positions. Additionally, its coils give it some bounce, making it easier for combination sleepers to change how they’re lying down. Stuart, a combo sleeper himself, praised how adaptive it felt as he moved around on top of it.
All of these features—versatility, responsiveness, and a supportive base—should be beneficial for people with scoliosis, as well.
What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?
The Bear Star Hybrid has five layers and a 13-inch thickness. Its cover is made with both HydroCool® technology and Celliant® fibers, each of which confers a different benefit.
The HydroCool® elements strive to keep the mattress cool, whereas the Celliant® may help muscle recovery along by transforming body heat into infrared energy.
Below the cover is a layer of Serene Gel Foam, which should deliver cushioning and cooling for those experiencing discomfort from scoliosis. Under this foam is a sheet of comfort foam that’s slightly more responsive even as it helps to relieve pressure.
Further down, you’ll find the coil unit, with individually wrapped springs that are reinforced along the edges. They rest on top of a base of high-density foam.
What We Liked
- Cooling power – Stuart highlighted the cool-to-the-touch cover during testing, but there’s a cooling element in almost every layer of this mattress. As a hybrid, it’s also far more likely to stay breezy than an all-foam alternative.
- Middle-of-the-road firmness – Although the initial foams in this bed will let you sink in a bit, it has a medium-firm feel that lends itself to versatility. Sleepers with different preferences may find it to be a nice middle ground.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for lightweight people – If you’re petite, the Bear Star Hybrid might feel a little too hard. Side sleepers especially should look out for pressure buildup around their hips and shoulders.
- Some bounce, but not a lot – The foams at the top of the Bear Star Hybrid limit how much bounce you can feel from the springs below. If you really like a bouncy bed, this one might not deliver.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid
Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Affordable Mattress for Scoliosis
Hybrids tend to be one of the priciest types of mattresses out there, but the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid bucks the trend with its budget-friendliness. It’s a no-frills purchase, but our testers all agreed that it performed well where it counts. “The Signature Hybrid mattress is where affordability meets quality,” said Mark.
This mattress is available in three firmness levels. The softer version offers more pressure relief, but people with scoliosis may enjoy the two firmer models for the palpable support.
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is 12.25 inches tall and has five distinct layers. It’s available in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel.
On the surface is its quilted top made with breathable fabric. If you’re willing to pay extra, you can augment it with a pillow top and GlacioTex™ cooling cover.
Underneath is a layer of Supreme Response Comfort Foam, which quickly bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied to aid with movement.
It’s followed by a layer of VariFlex™ foam for both cushioning and support. All of the above layers vary in thickness depending on the firmness level you choose.
Next up is the coil unit. It’s 8 inches tall with individually wrapped coils and high-caliber springs around the edges for strong sides. The springs sit on top of a high-density foam base.
What We Liked
- Suitable for most sleepers – According to Emma, “With the supportive yet comfortable feel, this bed is super versatile for all sleeping positions.” The choice of three firmnesses also enables you to customize the mattress a bit.
- Solid edges – The edge support on this hybrid is excellent. “The edges of this bed hold up great,” said Emma. “I can lay right on the edge without feeling like I’m going to fall out.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Side sleepers be wary – “On my side, I feel some pressure in my hips and shoulders, so if I exclusively slept on my side, I’d probably choose a softer bed. But it shouldn’t be a problem for combo sleepers,” Emma advised.
- Simple construction – There aren’t many fancy add-ons to this bed. It’s designed to be cozy, supportive, and durable, but it won’t impress with lots of bonus features.
Customer Reviews of the Signature Hybrid
On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Why the Plank Firm Luxe Earned Best Firm Mattress for Scoliosis
If your favorite beds are the ones that really lift up your back, then the Plank Firm Luxe should be a satisfying substitute. It’s a flippable mattress with a Firm and an Extra Firm side, both of which encourage a flat, neutral posture thought to benefit the spine and scoliosis symptoms.
That being said, the Plank Firm Luxe adds a touch more cushion than its predecessor, the Plank Firm. This upgraded model also features a coil unit in the middle of the bed for increased responsiveness. After testing this mattress, our reviewer Stuart concluded that if you like a firm sleeping surface, “it’s hard to beat the Plank Luxe Hybrid.”
What’s the Plank Firm Luxe Made Of?
The Plank Firm Luxe stands a little more than 13 inches high and has six layers. It begins with a cover that both our testers complimented: Stuart said it was “soft to the touch,” and Liz remarked that it felt “very durable.” (If you sleep very hot, you can replace this standard cover with a cooling GlacioTex™ cover for an additional fee.)
On the Firm side of the mattress, you’ll find 1.5-inch quilted top layer, followed by 1 inch of TitanFlex™ foam and 2 inches of high-density foam. TitanFlex™ foam is a proprietary material that the Plank brand characterizes as an alternative to latex foam. It’s both springy and pressure-relieving, and it runs cooler than foams with denser designs.
On the Extra Firm side, there’s a 0.75-inch quilted top layer. It’s stitched in such a way that the surface feels even firmer than the other side’s, and it also leads straight into a 2-inch layer of high-density foam, with no TitanFlex™ layer to speak of.
Sandwiched between these two sides is the mattress’s coil unit. It’s 6 inches thick, and its springs lend a bit of bounce to the bed’s firm feel.
What We Liked
- You won’t get stuck – The Plank Firm Luxe buoys you up rather than succumbing to your body’s pressure. This quality, coupled with the bed’s responsiveness, means that moving around during the night shouldn’t pose a problem. “[This is] a great mattress for those of us that move around a lot in our sleep,” said Liz. Stuart agreed: “Because of how firm it is, I found that repositioning myself … was very easy.”
- Great for plus-sized sleepers – The Plank Firm Luxe has a weight capacity of 950 pounds. “With this level of firmness, heavier individuals should find a good balance of contouring and support,” Stuart said.
Potential Drawbacks
- It’s really, really firm – The mattress’s name is no joke—to some people, it may feel like sleeping on a board. Stuart cautioned lightweight people away from this bed, saying that it probably “lacks the contouring and comfort you need.”
- It doesn’t cancel out motion completely – “Movement is a little more noticeable in this bed,” said Stuart. If you sleep with a partner who wakes up at your every fidget, it might not be a great fit for you.
Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm Luxe
On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. The Plank Firm Luxe mattress, favored by some customers for its ultra-firm support, may not be suitable for those seeking a softer sleep surface, as per customer feedback.

Why the Layla Memory Foam Earned Best Flippable Mattress for Scoliosis
Owning a flippable bed means that you have more choices than most people when you go to sleep. The Layla Memory Foam mattress allows you to select between a firmer side and a softer side, though both make use of copper-infused memory foam that contours soothingly to the body.
People with scoliosis may experience different symptoms from day to day, so the flexibility inherent in a flippable mattress can be a big advantage. If you feel like your back needs more cushioning on one night, choose the soft side; if you’re craving a more supportive feel, go with the firm side instead.
What’s the Layla Memory Foam Made Of?
The Layla Memory Foam is 10.5 inches tall with six total layers. Its flippable design centers around a core of dense, supportive foam.
On the soft side, a removable cover is followed by a plush layer of copper-gel memory foam. The copper assists with cooling while the foam’s adaptive structure firms up in response to increased pressure.
Underneath is a layer of Max Airflow Support Foam. This foam is cut with channels that help with airflow (hence its name), and is also zoned to provide targeted levels of support to different areas of the body.
On the firmer side, there isn’t a layer of Max Airflow Support Foam beneath the copper-gel memory foam. The memory foam also has a firmer feel to it, though it retains all the benefits of the copper.
What We Liked
- Motion isolation star – According to Stuart, this bed has excellent motion isolation. “Jump up and down, dance a little, feel free to wiggle all you want, and you’re never going to bother your partner while they sleep,” he said.
- Cooling copper – The copper gel in this bed helps to conduct heat and divert it away from your body. Stuart appreciated how cool the mattress felt, especially for an all-foam bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Weak edges – “Like most all-foam mattresses, this mattress [has edges that] may buckle more under your weight as opposed to a hybrid or spring mattress,” said Stuart. If you’re going to share the bed with someone, you may want to spring for a larger size to maximize the surface area you can both use.
- Not enough support for stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers need a lot of lift under their midsection, and this mattress probably won’t impress in that department. Stuart recommended it for back and side sleepers without reservation but was worried about stomach sleepers’ hips and lower backs sinking too deep.
Customer Reviews of the Layla mattress
On the Layla site, the Layla has an overall 4.5 out of 5 stars. One potential drawback of the Layla Original mattress is that its flippable design might not be as convenient for customers who prefer a fixed firmness, but it provides versatile comfort options with both soft and firm sides to choose from.

What to Look for in a Mattress for Scoliosis
Scoliosis can cause chronic back pain1, and one potential way to prevent pain from worsening is with a comfortable mattress. Some beds are better than others due to their construction, responsiveness, and support level, so let’s see how they differ.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
Innerspring mattresses have a traditional style with a coil unit and one comfort layer on top. These are good for people with scoliosis because they’re responsive and usually easy to get in and out of.
However, innerspring mattresses lack pressure relief compared to other mattress types, particularly if you’re a side sleeper or very lightweight.
So, while an innerspring bed could be a good choice for scoliosis, make sure to consider other crucial factors like your sleeping position and weight.
Learn More: Best Innerspring Mattress
Hybrid Mattresses
Hybrid mattresses have coils and multiple comfort layers that set them apart from classic innerspring beds. The coils are usually individually wrapped to enhance motion isolation and support.
Hybrids are a good option for people with scoliosis because they come in many styles, and you can choose among multiple firmness options, materials, and heights. These beds are usually breathable, but some have added cooling features like gel-infused foam or a breathable cover. Hybrids often offer an ideal blend of responsive support and plush pressure relief that could be great for someone with scoliosis.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Foam beds are made from multiple foam layers working together to deliver variable support and pressure-relieving levels. Memory foam mattresses hug the body, and you can also choose between several firmness options to find the most comfortable feel.
However, foam beds can be too hot for some people, especially if they contain traditional memory foam, so make sure to look for one with cooling features if you’re a hot sleeper. Another consideration is that memory and poly foam beds aren’t as responsive, so if ease of movement is important to you, you might want to consider another option.
Latex Mattresses
Latex is a good option if you’re looking for an eco-friendly bed. Latex comes from natural sources and is hypoallergenic, so it’s good if you’re prone to allergies.
Latex beds are typically more responsive than memory foam because latex is bouncier. On top of that, the material is breathable and more cooling, so it’s suitable for hot sleepers.
Latex beds are known for their durability and good edge support. Although they’re pricier than other all-foam models, these beds should last you a long time.
What to Consider When Shopping for a Mattress for Scoliosis
Spine Alignment and Support
As mentioned, scoliosis is linked to chronic back pain.1 To help ease the pain associated with scoliosis, you will want to find a mattress that promotes good spine alignment and balanced support.
These features will help relieve pressure that may build up around your spine. The exact type of mattress that will provide this for you will depend on factors such as your preferred sleeping position and your body weight.
Sleeping Position
Back sleepers typically fit well with medium-firm mattresses that can evenly distribute their weight and provide a balance between comfort and support. If you sleep on your side, a mattress that is somewhat soft can help relieve pressure around the hips and shoulders.
If possible, those with scoliosis should avoid sleeping on their stomach. This position can cause a sleeper’s hips to dip down in the bed which may result in exacerbated pain in the lower back. If you can’t switch to another position, look for a mattress that is firm enough to support your hips and keep your spine aligned.
For those who switch positions throughout the night, mattresses that are responsive and quickly regain their shape after weight is applied will provide ease of movement.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
Lightweight people are more likely2 to have scoliosis, and if this is the case for you, a slightly softer bed will probably work best. Plush mattresses can offer lighter people more cushioning, while still being supportive enough to ensure optimal spine alignment.
Although average-weight and heavyweight people may not have as high a probability of having scoliosis compared to lightweight people, it still happens. Average-weight sleepers should look at medium-firm mattresses, whereas heavyweight people typically need a firmer mattress to keep them lifted.
Firmness
According to the Scoliosis Association UK3, most people living with scoliosis should benefit from a medium mattress firmness. Your bed shouldn’t be too hard or soft, as both types could worsen the symptoms.
People with scoliosis need solid support in the hips and shoulders, which they might not get with a bed that lets them sink so easily.
On the flip side, a bed that’s too hard wouldn’t allow any contouring, which may result in pressure buildup, especially around the hip and shoulder areas.

Mattress Height
Those living with scoliosis should focus on beds that hit just the back of the knee when standing on the floor. This is considered the best height4 to allow sleepers to get in and out of bed easily. Luckily, some of the best mattress brands offer multiple heights, so there are plenty of options available.
Cooling
Although scoliosis doesn’t appear to be directly impacted by temperature, a cool sleep environment can contribute to an overall better quality of sleep. Furthermore, scoliosis patients who wear a back brace may have a harder time regulating their body temperature, and a bed with cooling properties could be very beneficial for them.
Innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to sleep cool because air can flow freely through the coils, but they may not be the best bet for those needing additional spinal support. Memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot, but many of these mattresses now come aerated and with other cooling properties like gel or copper. Lastly, latex is naturally cool and could help prevent overheating.
Motion Isolation
When you are experiencing pain from scoliosis, you won’t want your partner’s or pet’s nocturnal movements to worsen these issues. This can be prevented by investing in a bed with good motion isolation. Beds that prevent motion from transferring from one side to the other can not only help ensure a peaceful night’s sleep but may help prevent any additional pain.
Memory foam mattresses tend to lead the way when it comes to motion isolation due to their slow-moving feel.
Sex
Many people with this diagnosis can have fulfilling sex lives, and having a mattress with good responsiveness and bounce can help enhance your experience. Latex and hybrid beds snap back to their original shape quickly after weight has been applied, making it easier to move and reposition during sex. Innerspring beds are also known to be bouncy, but they may not offer enough cradling for those with scoliosis.
Pressure Relief
Pressure buildup is something many people struggle with. For this reason, it’s important to have a bed that contours the body, allowing a bit of cushioning to relieve pressure in areas like the hips, knees, and shoulders.
People with scoliosis need a pressure-relieving mattress that has comfort layers made from contouring materials that help relieve pressure while still supporting the body and preventing sinkage.
Edge Support
Edge support is valuable for people who like spreading out when they sleep. Couples typically benefit from it the most, although edge support is also important to some single individuals.
Many mattresses have good edge support thanks to reinforced edges. In hybrids, this usually includes thicker-gauge coils around the perimeter, while memory foam beds have higher-density foam in this area. If you have scoliosis, lying or sitting on the edge of the bed can be easier with a mattress that has reinforced sides.
Seniors looking for a supportive mattress should check out our Best Mattresses for Seniors.
Responsiveness & Bounce
People living with scoliosis might like responsive, bouncy beds because they foster easier movement. A mattress made from responsive materials is also more convenient for getting in and out of bed. This is helpful for people with scoliosis because they may wake up with pain and discomfort.
Responsiveness refers to how quickly a bed can respond to your movement, adjusting to the shape of your body in different positions. Hybrid, latex, and innerspring mattresses tend to be the most responsive, though as mentioned above, innerspring beds don’t provide much pressure relief.
Budget
The cost of a mattress is going to be a major consideration for most people, but fortunately, you should be able to find a quality mattress for scoliosis in all kinds of price ranges. When shopping, pay attention to the materials that are used because this can add to the durability and longevity of your mattress. If you’re looking to save money on a more high-end bed, consider buying online directly from the manufacturer, especially during major sales holidays when prices drop even lower.
What Causes Scoliosis?
Those with neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy can develop scoliosis. Additionally, birth defects that affect the spine, chest wall surgeries on babies, spinal injuries or infections, and irregularities of the spinal cord can all cause scoliosis.1 However, the source of most scoliosis cases is not known.1
Scoliosis typically begins in younger people. This condition can run in families, but most who receive the diagnosis don’t have a family history of the disease. Lastly, while the rate of scoliosis is around the same for boys and girls, girls are at a greater risk of their spinal curvature worsening to the point that treatment is necessary.1
How Can a Mattress Help with Scoliosis?
“If your mattress doesn’t offer the right support or contouring, it could make scoliosis symptoms worse by messing up your spinal alignment and making you more uncomfortable while you sleep, waking you up. But with a supportive mattress that contours to your body, it can help ease scoliosis symptoms by keeping your spine aligned and reducing pressure points, so you can get better sleep and wake up with less back pain.”
Dr. Raj Dasgupta

What Is the Best Sleeping Position for Scoliosis?
Back Sleeping
Back sleepers with scoliosis may like a mattress with a bit of contouring. Back sleeping can be tricky because you don’t want to put too much pressure on your spine. The best way to avoid this is to use pillows under your shoulders at the base of your spine. You can also use rolled-up towels, but make sure this isn’t too high or low because the spine has to stay neutral, flat, and parallel to the mattress.
Side Sleeping
Side sleeping is healthy for spinal alignment, so it’s also good for people with scoliosis. However, those with a more pronounced curve should be careful when it comes to the side they’re sleeping on. If the biggest curve is on the left side, you should sleep on your right side, and vice versa.
On top of that, you should also think about mattress firmness and contouring to prevent pressure buildup when sleeping on your side.
Read more about the best mattresses for side sleepers.
Combination Sleeping
Rotating between your side and back could help ease pressure and discomfort from scoliosis. However, if one of the positions you like to sleep in is on your stomach, it may be best to try and adjust since this position can put increased pressure on the lower back. Also, responsive beds will help combination sleepers adjust more easily.
Stomach Sleeping
Individuals with scoliosis may find stomach sleeping uncomfortable, waking up with pain in sensitive areas. For this reason, some physicians advise against5 sleeping on your stomach.
In this position, your neck and head twist at angles that may be comfortable at first, but could cause the spine to fall out of alignment. Additionally, stomach sleeping puts added pressure on the lower back.
Learn More: Sleeping With Scoliosis
What Should I Avoid If I Have Scoliosis?
When it comes to sleeping, there’s plenty of things you do that may exacerbate scoliosis symptoms. For one, avoid sleeping on a mattress that feels uncomfortable. The reason for your mattress feeling uncomfortable could be a variety; perhaps it’s older and starting to sag, or maybe it wasn’t well-suited to your needs when you bought it. Seek out a medium-firm, supportive, and pressure-relieving mattress that should keep your spine aligned.
You can also adjust your habits when it comes to sleeping. For one, make sure you avoid sleeping on your stomach,5 since it’s the position with the least potential for proper sleep posture. The position of your neck and head often throw your whole body out of alignment. Make sure your mattress is also conducive to your preferred sleeping position. Side sleepers generally prefer softer mattresses, back sleepers can enjoy a medium to medium-firm bed, and combination sleepers will feel comfortable on a responsive mattress.
Tips for Better Sleeping with Scoliosis
- Add pillows under your back or knees – Utilizing pillows can help reduce pressure on the body. Back sleepers should place a pillow6 under their knees, and side sleepers can put a pillow between their knees and then pull their knees slightly up toward their chest.
- Use a mattress topper – If your bed isn’t at an optimal firmness level for scoliosis, a mattress topper can be a convenient and cost-effective way to change it.
- Practice good sleep hygiene – Keeping your room at a cool temperature, using quality bedding, and not looking at screens when you’re in bed are a few of the ways you can help improve your sleep quality.
Best Mattress for Scoliosis FAQs
Should you get a firm or soft mattress for scoliosis?
Firm mattresses can be too firm for people struggling with scoliosis. These allow minimal contouring and may not be as comfortable, especially for those sleeping on their side due to pressure buildup. Instead, focus more on medium and medium-firm beds that offer some contouring without taking away from support.
What’s the best pillow to use for scoliosis?
One of the best pillows to use for scoliosis has a medium loft, so it’s not too high or too low. Medium pillows keep your head well-supported, which also helps keep the spine straight. Cervical pillows are also a good option because they promote healthy neck posture.
What type of mattress is best for someone with scoliosis?
People with scoliosis should focus on having a bed height in which the top hits right behind the knee when standing straight next to their bed. Hybrid, latex, and foam mattresses can be great for many sleepers with scoliosis as they offer great support and pressure relief, but it’s important to consider additional factors about the mattress type, such as cooling, and responsiveness. Innerspring beds are great for support, breathability, and responsiveness, but they may not have enough cushioning for some sleepers.
What’s the best sleeping position for scoliosis?
Typically, the best way to sleep with scoliosis is flat on your back because this allows a healthy spine alignment. However, many people can’t sleep this way, so they choose side sleeping. Side sleeping is also fine, but you should make sure that the bed allows a bit of contouring so that your spine is straight and no pressure can build up in sensitive areas.
Most experts will advise against sleeping on your stomach, which can put extra pressure on the lower back.
What is the best mattress for a straight spine?
The best mattress for a straight spine will keep you lifted and aligned. Usually, this is accomplished by zoning in the support unit of the mattress, which can be made up of coils, foam, or even latex. It will allow your lower back to remain elevated while relieving pressure in places where your body digs into the mattress, such as the hips and shoulders.
