Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs.

For this roundup, we focused on the hybrid mattresses and offered recommendations based on which mattresses we deemed most likely to replicate that experience. We took several factors into account when devising our list, including different sleeping positions, cooling elements, mattress construction, edge support, and more.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Hybrid Mattress Overall

This bed performs very well across several testing categories, so it tops our hybrid roundup. Its three foam layers and innerspring unit provide a cozy mix of support and pressure relief, at a price that feels just as comfortable as the materials. My fellow tester Emma called the Midnight “a killer value for the money,” and I’m inclined to agree.

The Midnight also gets major points for how it can cross the aisle in terms of different sleeping preferences. Its medium-firm feel fits a wider variety of sleep positions and body types, making it extremely versatile.

What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of

Under its soft cover, the Helix Midnight stacks its signature Memory Plus Foam on top of two subsequent layers of responsive poly foam.

These three foam layers transition into a unit of pocketed coils, which are reinforced along the long edges of the bed to prevent any sagging on the borders. Finally, there’s a layer of DuraDense foam beneath the coils for added stability and longevity.

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction

Our Take: “On my back, I feel really comfortable and evenly supported. I like how the foams feel soft, but not too soft.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • A beautiful match for back sleepers – We found the Helix Midnight to be a stellar choice for sleeping on your back, in particular. Its support felt even throughout its entire surface area, with enough complementing pressure relief for a cozy night’s rest.
  • Strong edges – The Midnight’s lengthwise edge support was another standout feature. Even when lying on the very edge of the bed, Emma felt secure.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too soft for stomach sleeping – Per Emma, stomach sleepers might experience too much sinkage around their hips with this bed. “I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers,” she said.
  • Not as contouring as all-foam beds – If you love to sink into memory foam, the Midnight will probably feel a little too tough for you. It has softness and give, but not to the extent that a plush foam bed will.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Hybrid for Stomach Sleepers

As a dedicated stomach sleeper myself, I wholeheartedly recommend the Emma Hybrid Comfort for those who sleep in this comfortable but controversial position.

We need a firm surface so we don’t sink too far, and this bed lives up to the challenge.

What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?

At 13 inches tall, the Emma Hybrid Comfort consists of six layers, including its moisture-wicking cover.

Underneath are three layers of foam: a layer of breathable Airgocell® foam, a memory foam layer that isolates motion, and a firm HRX foam layer that leads into the innerspring unit.

The individually wrapped coils of this bed have seven unique zones to provide tailored support and give where needed. They’re also reinforced along the edges and supported by a foam base.

Looking at the Emma Hybrid Construction in the lab

We round off the mattress with an anti-slip lower cover that also has handles for easy transportation.

My Take: I believe the Emma Hybrid Comfort should work for my fellow stomach sleepers thanks to its firmness. Average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, especially, you should feel supported on this bed.

What We Liked

  • Great motion isolation – Hybrid beds are notorious for poor motion isolation, but I was surprised by how well this bed dampened motion. If you wake easily and sleep with a partner, you’re likely to sleep uninterrupted.
  • Durable – If you’re looking for a bed that’ll last you a long time, I think the Emma Hybrid Comfort should last at least 10 years, since it’s built to last.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Firmer for lighter folks – Stomach sleepers need the firmness that the Emma Hybrid Comfort provides, but those who are especially lightweight may find the bed too firm to the point of discomfort.
  • No cradling feel – If you want the “hugging” feel of foam, look elsewhere. This bed is firm and bouncy.

Customer Reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is a relatively new mattress, but the reviews it’s gathered so far on the Emma website give it an average score of 4.8 stars out of 5. A few reviewers say that it’s even firmer than they anticipated, but most people—including some plus-size customers—are satisfied with how durable and supportive it felt.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Back Pain

The WinkBed boasts a “3-Step Back-Relief System™” that reportedly promotes proper spinal alignment and soothing pressure relief for aching backs. In addition to pocketed coils that give zoned resistance, it features a foam LumbarLayer™ that lends extra support to the middle region of the back—an especially vulnerable region when it comes to back pain.

My fellow reviewers did indeed feel well supported by this hybrid, and admired its handcrafted touches.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is 13.5 inches tall and has multiple layers of comfort foams under its cool Tencel© cover. The bed leads with a palpably plush Euro pillow top that stays cool with the help of gel-infused foam.

After additional foam layers, including the proprietary LumbarLayer™, you’ll find the coil unit.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

Its springs are made from recycled steel and divided into “support zones” that provide customized pushback to areas that need it. They’re also reinforced along the perimeter so that the edges of the mattress feel strong.

Our Take: “There is quality in every single layer of this bed. I really like that these are handmade, that they’re tufted, and that … you can really feel that pressure relief.” Mark Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Soft on top, supportive underneath – My team found the WinkBed mattress to be an impressive contender in terms of both support and pressure relief. “This top layer offers pressure relief and a gentle cradle,” said Sean. Regarding the coil unit, he added that its “solid support … helps keep the spine aligned when I roll onto my back.”
  • Lots of options – The team especially loved how personalized you can get with your WinkBed order. The mattress comes in Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus models, the last of which is intended for larger people.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not much sink – Per my fellow testers, you’ll feel like you’re “floating on top of this mattress” rather than sinking into the layers. For fans of memory foam, this might not be the preferred feel.
  • Some motion transfer – The WinkBed won’t be able to stifle big movements. If you’re a light sleeper, you’ll probably be able to feel a partner fidgeting (or a pet jumping into bed).

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed Mattress

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Nectar Hybrid Earned Best Cheap Hybrid Mattress

Although many hybrid mattresses will cost between $1,000 and $2,000, you can reliably find a queen-size Nectar Hybrid at prices below $1,000 if you time your shopping around holidays and other sales.

Nectar doesn’t need to sacrifice quality to offer their hybrid mattress at an affordable price—they combine CertiPUR-US® certified gel memory foam with a hardy spring unit to ensure plenty of pressure relief and support.

What’s the Nectar Hybrid Made Of?

The Nectar Hybrid is 12 inches tall and has five layers, beginning with a breathable and moisture-wicking top cover.

Its two upper layers of foam—a 2-inch layer of gel memory foam, and a 1-inch layer of transitional poly foam—contribute both pressure relief and responsiveness. They segue into an 8-inch coil unit with individually wrapped springs, including reinforced coils around the perimeter for convenient edge support.

Finally, at the bottom of the bed, a base layer of ActiveSupport foam holds the above layers aligned and steady.

Our Take: “Most memory foam beds take slightly more effort to move around on, but I personally didn’t feel restricted on the Nectar Hybrid.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Great for two sleepers – My colleagues recommended the Nectar Hybrid to couples in particular, as its motion isolation and edge support are both standout features. “You and your partner can really stretch out and enjoy that memory foam comfort … without sacrificing surface space,” said Stuart.
  • Lots of responsiveness – Combination sleepers or folks who like a bit of bounce should have a nice time on the Nectar Hybrid. Stuart said that he had an easier time repositioning on this bed than he might on a traditional memory foam mattress.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s firmer than you might expect – “This mattress [has] a bit of a firmer feel,” said Stuart. “So if you like a softer mattress, this may not be the one for you.” Our fellow tester Liz agreed that this hybrid is on the firmer side.
  • Side sleepers might want more pressure relief – Stuart has wider shoulders, and he felt some pressure buildup in that area when he tried the Nectar Hybrid on his side. “If you’re primarily a side sleeper, this bed may be slightly too firm for you, especially if you have broader shoulders compared to your waist,” he concluded.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar Hybrid Mattress

On Nectar’s website, this mattress scored a 4.7 out of 5 stars, from 341 reviews. The Nectar Hybrid mattress, favored by customers for its affordability and pressure relief, has received some complaints about off-gassing odors upon unboxing.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Side Sleepers

The Nolah Evolution is geared toward satisfying pressure relief. According to the brand, its proprietary AirFoamICE™ layer relieves pressure up to four times more effectively than traditional foam, and is temperature-neutral to boot.

There are seven layers inside this mattress, all of which can reduce the strain on the shoulders and hips that side sleepers commonly experience. The 2-inch Euro top in particular mimics the opulent feel of a soft, hotel-quality mattress.

What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?

At 15 inches high, the Nolah Evolution is one of the tallest mattresses my team has ever reviewed. It has eight layers if you include its top cover and the breathable gusset around its Euro top. It also comes in three firmness levels: Firm, Luxury Firm, and Plush.

Its cover is made of organic cotton and ArcticTex™ fibers, the latter of which can help to disperse heat. Its 2-inch Euro top is quilted with soft foam and encased by a gusset with vents that allow heat to easily exit the bed.

Taking a look at the Nolah Evolution mattress construction

Next are three separate layers of comfort foam. They include the a 2-inch layer of the brand’s exclusive AirFoamICE™, a 2-inch layer of supportive high-resilience foam, and a 1-inch layer of springy, high-density foam for transitioning to the springs.

The 8-inch coil unit is zoned into three discrete sections for specialized resistance in different areas (such as the lumbar spine). The coils are also reinforced along the mattress’s edges. They sit on top of a durable base layer made of recycled plant fiber.

Our Take: “When I crawled into this bed I could really feel it gently cradle my body … I think I could even feel the zoned support in the springs working to support my body weight appropriately.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • A side sleeper’s perfect match – This mattress appears to be a paragon of relaxation for side sleepers. In fact, my fellow reviewers gave the Nolah Evolution the maximum number of stars for side-sleeping across all body types, from lightweight to plus-size.
  • Plush but bouncy – The initial layers of the Evolution are soft, but Stuart said that they didn’t cut into this hybrid’s responsiveness: “Even though it’s got some plush and sink to it, I was still able to move around and reposition easily without feeling like I was being sucked in by quicksand.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • Stomach sleepers might need more support – In testing the Luxury Firm version of the Nolah Evolution, Stuart commented that “stomach sleepers may find that their hips and lower back sink pretty deep … it may not be the most comfortable for long-term sleep.”
  • Tall and heavy – This is one tall hybrid! As it’s thicker and heavier than most of the mattresses we review, Stuart recommended getting some help if you ever need to move it around.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution

The Nolah Evolution rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Nolah’s website. Customers frequently commend the Nolah Evolution mattress for its exceptional pressure relief and cooling properties, but some have observed that it may produce slight off-gassing upon unboxing.

Why the Bear Elite Hybrid Earned Best Cooling Hybrid Mattress

The Bear Elite Hybrid has cooling in mind from the top down. Its cover incorporates temperature-regulating Phase Change Material (PCM) as well as Celliant® fibers—a performance fabric that encourages healthy bloodflow and may even aid in exercise recovery.

Its memory foam layer is infused with cooling antimicrobial copper, and the coils at the base also help to keep cool air circulating throughout the night.

What’s the Bear Elite Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a towering 14 inches high with five total layers. It’s also available in a Firm, Medium, or Soft feel.

Its cover features Phase Change Material (PCM) that strives to keep you cool by absorbing and releasing heat as needed. It’s also woven with Celliant®, a textile that allegedly converts body heat into infrared energy. This energy may subsequently boost bloodflow to the areas that are touching the cover, helping the tissue there to recover after a workout or active day.

Taking a look at the Bear Elite construction in the lab

Next up is a layer of memory foam that’s been infused with copper for even more cooling capabilities. It’s followed by a transitional foam layer that leads into the bed’s coils.

The innerspring unit in this hybrid is zoned into different regions that give different levels of pushback. The springs in the middle of the mattress have a higher gauge that boosts support around the lumbar spine, for example. The coils around the edges of the bed are also strengthened to keep you feeling secure on the sides.

Finally, a base layer of high-density foam lends stability to the mattress.

Our Take: “The cooling was immediately noticeable as I lied down on this bed.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Balanced feel – Stuart enjoyed the softness of the Elite Hybrid’s first layer, coupled with the underlying resistance from its coils: “It’s got a familiar mattress feeling with plushness in the cover and foam layers, but quick response and support from the springs.”
  • Ultra cool – Stuart also noted that this hybrid’s cooling powers were immediately apparent. “I’m pretty sure that it would do a good job of keeping anyone cool throughout the night,” he remarked.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too plush for stomach sleepers – Stuart didn’t think this bed would be the best fit for stomach sleepers, who “may not like the plush feel as much.” Too much sinkage around the hips can cause bothersome lower back pain, so tread carefully if you sleep on your belly.
  • Higher price points – If there’s no sale running, the Bear Elite Hybrid is one of the more costly mattresses on this list—a queen will run you about $2,000.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid

According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Firm Hybrid Mattress

The Titan Plus was designed especially for larger bodies. Its TitanCaliber™ coils aim to provide just the right amount of pushback and durability, while the proprietary foam above handles pressure relief. From the high-density foam at its base to the cooling gel memory foam under its cover, it caters to people who need robust support. It all amounts to a notably firm (but not rock-hard) bed.

What’s the Titan Plus Made Of?

The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall with a top cover and four internal layers.

A comfortably cool 1-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam leads into a 2-inch layer of proprietary TitanFlex™ foam, which combines pressure-relieving and responsive properties.

Underneath is a 6-inch spring unit with TitanCaliber™ coils, followed by 2 inches of high-density base foam for added stability and longevity.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Construction from the lab

Our Take: “This mattress feels supportive enough that I don’t feel stuck at all. Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over the surface and I feel extremely comfortable.” – Patrick, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Lots of support for bigger bodies – Our team prized the supportive, firm feel of this mattress, which was complemented by the cozy, compressible foam in its cover. Very petite sleepers might find this bed to be a bit too firm, but our plus-size reviewer was won over by its construction.
  • Admirable motion isolation – “For as much bounce as this bed has, it contains motion pretty well,” said Patrick. “Restless sleepers probably won’t wake up their sleeping partners.”

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s pretty firm – If you love a cloud-like bed, the Titan Plus probably isn’t for you. It feels sturdy and has some give at the very top, but not enough for lightweight side sleepers or anyone who favors a very soft surface.
  • Cooling cover costs extra – Hot sleepers will have to fork over some additional dollars to outfit this bed with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover, which can help to absorb and dissipate excess warmth.

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Why the Saatva Latex Hybrid Earned Best Latex Hybrid Mattress

Saatva is well-regarded for their luxury innerspring beds, so I jumped at the chance to test out their latex hybrid model. As a stomach sleeper, I’m on the lookout for a mattress that gives me enough lift and support without losing a welcoming softness on top—and this bed was an utter treat.

The latex feels cushy but extremely responsive, and the springs beneath it kept me from any uncomfortable sinkage. It felt like I was getting all the pressure-relieving benefits of poly foam, but without any feelings of stuckness or uneven pushback.

What’s the Saatva Latex Hybrid Made Of?

The Saatva Latex Hybrid has five total layers and stands 12 inches tall.

The first layer is a soft Euro top. Its cover is made of organic cotton, and it’s augmented with a plant-based antimicrobial treatment that resists germs and mold. Underneath, a layer of organic New Zealand wool functions as a natural alternative to an artificial fire retardant.

It’s also a moisture-wicking, breathable material that assists with temperature regulation.

Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress Construction

Next is a 3-inch layer of soft-but-springy Talalay latex. This natural and hypoallergenic material is made from the sap of rubber trees, and has channels punched throughout its surface for easy airflow. It’s also split into five zones that offer customized levels of support to different body parts, particularly the lumbar area.

The latex sits atop the mattress’s coil unit. There, you’ll find pocketed springs made from recycled steel. Like the latex, the springs are divided into different zones that apply varying amounts of resistance depending on their location.
Finally, a base pad stabilizes the above layers and ups the bed’s durability. It’s made of organic cotton and organic wool, both of which have been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

My Take: What I really enjoy (and what I think other sleepers will too) is how this mattress was built to shape around your body. Latex, even with a firmer feel, has some give to it, and really conforms to your body as you lie atop it.

What I Liked

  • Consistent support – Stomach sleepers like me often have trouble finding the right amount of support for our lower bodies. But on this bed, my lower back and hips felt lifted—no sinking, no back pain. The zones in the latex and the springs gave each body part the right amount of resistance.
  • Cushioned surface, strong edges – The latex foam molded around my body to relieve pressure, but it sprang back up when I moved around, and I didn’t ever feel like I might roll off the bed at the sides. I was impressed with just how secure the edge support made me feel.

Potential Drawbacks

  • It’s a firm bed – Even with the Euro top and cushiony latex layer, this is definitely not a soft mattress. It feels pleasantly firm to me, but may feel too firm to petite folks and side sleepers.
  • Motion travels – Latex and springs together is a bouncy mix, and it doesn’t help with motion isolation. You’ll probably feel a partner’s movements in this bed, so light sleepers should be wary.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Latex Hybrid

On Saatva’s website, their Latex Hybrid scores a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress for its eco-friendly and durable materials but have reported that it is relatively expensive compared to some other latex mattresses.

Why the Puffy Lux Hybrid Earned Best Plush Hybrid Mattress

Multiple proprietary foams and a combination foam-and-coil unit render this hybrid a supremely luxurious and plush option. Its blend of softness and support has even been endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.

Unique to the Puffy Lux Hybrid is its Plush Dual Cloud foam. Like every other foam in this bed, it’s CertiPUR-US® certified, but it steals the spotlight when it comes to alleviating pressure along the spine. It’s meant to mold to the contours of the back and contribute to the mattress’s plush, cloud-like feel.

What’s the Puffy Lux Hybrid Made Of?

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is 12 inches tall with five layers.

There are three proprietary foams underneath its hypoallergenic and cloud-patterned cover, and each of them contributes something different to the bed, from pressure relief to humidity resistance.

First is a 1.5-inch layer of Cooling Cloud™ Foam, which molds to the shape of your pressure points and aims to dissipate excess heat.

Take a closer look at the Puffy Lux Hybrid construction

Underneath is a 1.5-inch layer of Plush Dual Cloud Foam, meant to give even more pressure relief to the spine in particular. Finally, a 2-inch layer of Climate Comfort™ Foam guards against humidity.

These foam layers lie securely atop a 7-inch coil unit that is itself bordered by a high-density foam frame for edge support.

My Take: This is quite a soft bed with surprisingly strong sides—I’m held securely within it both sitting and lying at the edge.

What I Liked

  • Soft enough for back and side sleepers – Many sleepers should find this hybrid to be exceptionally cozy. It’s a 5/10 on our firmness scale, so it’s softer than most, with lots of pressure relief for your joints.
  • Phenomenal foam edge support – There’s a thick foam border around the innerspring unit in this bed, and it really kicks the edge support up a notch. I was in no danger of rolling off, even when I laid down right on the side.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not firm enough for stomach sleepers – When I was lying my stomach, the Puffy Lux Hybrid didn’t perform as well as I’d hoped. My lower back and hips were sinking too low for comfortable long-term sleep.
  • Hard to back up the cooling claims – There are lots of temperature-regulating materials in this mattress. I didn’t feel hot when testing it out, but I didn’t feel like I was cooling down, either. It’s tough to say whether these foams can live up to their lofty cooling promises.

Customer Reviews of the Puffy Lux Hybrid

The Puffy Lux Hybrid boasts several 5 star reviews on its site from customers who credit the comfort of the mattress and its ease on their aches and pains for their high ratings.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Couples

This hybrid uses individually encased coils, so you and your partner can still get lots of bounce without too much motion transfer. According to my fellow tester Emma, “Couples shouldn’t be bothered by movements across the bed unless they’re really sensitive and super-light sleepers.”

Additionally, the edge support in this bed is top-notch, allowing sleepers to spread out over the entire surface area of the mattress.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid stands 11.5 inches tall and has 5 layers. You can purchase it in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel, which will determine the thickness of its foams.

The mattress begins with a soft quilted top, followed by two layers of foam: one that’s hyper-responsive, and one that promotes deeper compression and contouring. Underneath, there’s an 8-inch coil unit with specialized high-caliber springs around the mattress’s edges. It rests on top of a high-density foam base.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Construction from the lab

Our Take: “Hybrids usually perform pretty average when it comes to motion transfer, but we were surprised at how well [this bed] isolated motion, especially for how responsive it is.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Customizable feel – I’d recommend the Medium version of this bed as a good all-purpose option for couples, but there are Soft and Firm models as well. Consult with your partner and pick the firmness that best matches your preferences.
  • Great motion isolation and edge support – “The edges of this bed hold up great,” said Emma. “[They] make the bed feel a lot bigger because you can maximize every inch of the surface, which is ideal if you share a mattress.” She also complimented its motion isolation, which exceeded her expectations for a hybrid.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not built for pressure relief – According to Emma, this bed “has an innerspring feel, and the foams on the top aren’t the best at relieving pressure. If you sleep exclusively on your side, it might be best to look elsewhere.”
  • No fun bonus features – This hybrid may seem a little basic compared to mattresses that have 6+ layers and lots of fancy touches. “This bed doesn’t have a ton of bells and whistles,” Emma remarked, “but it’s a pretty solid bed for the price that you’re paying.”

Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Hybrid Mattress Buyer’s Guide

What is a Hybrid Mattress?

A hybrid mattress is made of a combination of materials, including innerspring coils and foam. This construction provides the best of both worlds: the support of coils with the comfort of foam, resulting in a mattress that should work for all types of sleepers.

The most common type of hybrid mattress is the innerspring/memory foam hybrid. This mattress features a layer of memory foam over innerspring coils to provide pressure relief, support, and bounce. Other common hybrid mattresses are made with latex or polyfoam. The number of foam layers and types of materials vary among mattress brands. Some companies produce hybrids that contain memory foam and latex, while others may have polyfoam and memory foam.

Pros & Cons of a Hybrid Mattress

Much like all mattresses, hybrids have advantages and disadvantages. Some people may find that the cons heavily outweigh the pros, whereas others may feel that the benefits of owning a hybrid are incomparable. For this reason, you should consider both sides before buying a hybrid.

Pros
The Bounce – Hybrids have steel coils that offer bounce and support. Bounce means the mattress has a quicker response to it, which makes it easier for people to change positions. This is especially helpful for those with limited mobility or combination sleepers.
The Ventilation – Hybrid beds should work better for hot sleepers because the construction gives plenty of airflow. The steel coils increase air circulation throughout the mattress, and the foams used in most hybrids are also breathable.
The Support – Coils can offer enhanced support compared to all-foam models. They evenly distribute weight and conform to the body while also providing durability. If you have back pain, a hybrid is likely to help because it offers targeted support.
Cons
The Price – Hybrid mattresses are typically more expensive than an all-foam mattress because of their advanced design. However, shoppers have plenty of options to choose from among brands, with some companies offering lower prices than others.
The Weight – Hybrid mattresses are often heavier than all-foam ones, making them more difficult to move and rotate. Keep this in mind because you’ll have to carry the mattress from your doorstep to the bedroom unless you opt for white glove delivery.
The Motion Transfer – Hybrid mattresses usually don’t isolate motion as well as all-foam beds. So, if you have a partner who tosses and turns at night, you may feel some movement.

Hybrid Mattress Construction

Most hybrid mattresses have foam at the top and coils near the base, but the specific materials and layers can vary from bed to bed. Many companies create unique variations on the foam-coil combo to help enhance sleep.

Type of Foam

Poly Foam

Poly foam is short for polyurethane foam. It’s the least expensive of the three types of foams and the lowest quality. Poly foams are typically less dense than memory foam, but some brands make high-density versions for added support.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is a specific type of poly foam that’s designed to contour the sleeper’s body. It has a cradling feel and slowly compresses under applied weight, allowing sleepers to sink gently into its surface. It remains one of the most popular bedding materials because it provides excellent pressure relief.

Memory foam is denser than other poly foams and is generally considered better in quality. It tends to run hot, so many mattress brands will infuse their memory foam with cooling materials such as gel or copper.

Latex

Latex foam is made from the sap of rubber trees. It has more bounce to it than other foams, so it’s excellent for repositioning, though people who prioritize motion isolation may not favor it. It’s also temperature-neutral and hypoallergenic. Due to these properties and its natural origins, it’s the costliest foam in the mattress world.

Type of Coils

Pocketed

Pocketed coils are individually wrapped in fabric. The fabric sheaths allow the springs to move independently of one another, which reduces motion transfer. Most modern hybrid mattresses feature pocketed coils.

Bonnell

Bonnell coils follow an older coil design that was originally developed in the 1800s and appear most often in classic innerspring beds. These coils are shaped like an hourglass. The wide part is designed to be responsive and supportive, and the thinner part is more durable. The coils are connected by metal wires and move as one.

Continuous

Continuous wire coils are connected by a single wire. They usually have more of an ‘S’ shape to them compared to other types of springs. Although they’re known for their durability, they won’t provide much contouring.

Offset

Like the Bonnell coils, offset coils are hourglass-shaped. However, they can react independently of one another. Sleepers can expect more contouring and less motion transfer with this coil type.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Hybrid Mattress

Sleeping Position

If you are a back sleeper, look for a bed that will provide the necessary support for optimal spine alignment while still delivering pressure relief to your shoulders. Hybrids are great at this: Their spring units take care of the support, and their comfort foams provide pressure relief.

Stomach sleepers match well with firmer, highly supportive beds. Make sure the hybrid you’re considering has a firmer support rating: a 7 or higher on a 1-10 firmness scale is best for this group.

Side sleeping tends to put more pressure on your joints. You’ll need to find a hybrid mattress that can provide enough cushioning while still giving you solid support. Look for more plush-feeling beds that will cradle your shoulders and hips. Consider hybrids with memory foam in their upper layers as it’s a reliably cozy material for side sleepers.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid stomach sleeper testing
Testing the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress for stomach sleepers

Combination sleepers should benefit from a hybrid’s versatility. The responsiveness of the coils can help you shift throughout the night, and the foam layers can make almost any position comfortable. If you prefer even more bounce, look at hybrid beds built with latex.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

Hybrid beds should work well for people of all shapes and sizes, especially those who carry more weight. Using both coils and foam can provide enhanced support to ensure the person’s body remains in proper alignment when they sleep. Heavier individuals should find that the pushback from the coils gives them good support.

Firmness

Most sleepers do best with medium-firm beds, but your ideal mattress firmness will ultimately be determined by your body weight and sleep position. For instance, heavier sleepers might want to go for a firmer mattress because a softer one could sink in more, which could lead to poor spine alignment and back pain. Conversely, petite sleepers will likely find softer beds more comfortable.

Cooling

Hybrids are excellent for cooling and are often the better choice for extra-hot sleepers. The coils in these beds provide added airflow, which all-foam models do not have. Furthermore, many companies include additional cooling features that hot sleepers should love. Many will infuse cooling gel into any memory foam layers or implement a cooling cover for a comfortable surface.

Nolah Evolution Mattress Temperature Gun
Our heat gun readings when we tested cooling for the Nolah Evolution mattress.

Motion Isolation

If you’re looking for a mattress that limits motion transfer but still provides the appropriate amount of bounce and support, combining memory foam and coils would be a great call. The result is a reliable foundation covered with body contouring foam that makes you feel as if you are sleeping on a cloud but with enhanced back support.

Testing Motion Transfer by Sleep Advisor team on Titan Plus Luxe bed
Testing the motion isolation capabilities of the Titan Plus mattress in our testing facility.

Sex

A hybrid mattress made of latex and innerspring coils is an excellent choice for spicing up your sex life. These hybrid mattresses are often more quick-responding to help you reposition and move freely during intimacy. The responsiveness and springiness of latex coupled with the buoyancy of coils make this an ideal hybrid for sexually-active couples.

Pressure Relief

A mattress with the ability to relieve pressure that builds up around the areas that come into contact with your bed such as the shoulders, lower back, and hips can help ease many of your aches and pains. Memory foam hybrids are particularly good at this because the upper, slow-moving comfort layers cradle sleepers in a way that helps alleviate pressure buildup. Additionally, the soft, responsiveness of latex can also be an excellent choice for those seeking pressure relief.

Looking to upgrade your mattress? Check out our Best Luxury Mattresses.

Edge Support

Hybrids are generally excellent for edge support, which means the sides of the bed provide equal support to the sleeper. Many brands place higher-gauge coils along the perimeter to ensure quality edge support. This is often an important category for couples or people who like to spread out across the mattress because this gives them more surface space use.

Seniors looking for a supportive mattress should check out our Best Mattresses for Seniors.

Budget

Hybrid mattresses provide great value for your money. That’s why you see that some of the best brands out there take advantage of this innovative design. Most well-known brands use combinations of the core materials to utilize their maximum benefits and deliver enhanced sleep at an affordable cost. While many brands offer budget-friendly hybrid options, you can generally expect these beds to cost more than all-foam or traditional innerspring models.

Hybrid vs Other Types of Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses are versatile, making them a good option for most sleepers. However, the market offers many beds providing different advantages and disadvantages. The best way to decide if a hybrid mattress is the right choice for you is to compare it to other types, keeping in mind your needs and preferences.

Memory Foam vs. Hybrid

The construction of a hybrid and memory foam mattress might somewhat vary, but some basics remain the same. As the name implies, memory foam beds contain memory foam. Additionally, manufacturers typically include other types of foam to achieve different performance and comfort levels. In most cases, polyfoam is used as the support base in these beds.

Hybrid beds have foam and coils, but the foam they contain can be memory foam, polyfoam, or latex. The coil unit is typically placed beneath the foam layers, though some brands add additional support foam at the base to reinforce the coils..

The main difference between the two types is the presence of coils in hybrids.

Innerspring vs. Hybrid

Hybrid and innerspring mattresses are similar, but there are some key differences. Hybrids have thicker foam layers and a coil support base. The foam layers in hybrids can include polyfoam, memory foam, latex, or a mix of these.

On the other hand, innerspring beds have a thin comfort layer that doesn’t provide much of a cushion, which could be particularly uncomfortable for some side sleepers. Additionally, innerspring mattresses have an interconnected coil base, while most hybrids have individually wrapped coils. As a result, hybrids reduce motion transfer much better than their innerspring counterparts.

Latex vs. Hybrid

A latex bed is made of latex foam and does not contain coils. Latex is an organic material that feels soft to the skin and is hypoallergenic. Many of the best organic mattresses are made with latex, making this a great option for environmentally conscious shoppers. Latex is also a buoyant material, so you can expect some more bounce in these beds. Another thing to remember is that you can also find hybrid mattresses with latex layers above the coils.

Hybrid Mattress FAQs

Are hybrid mattresses good?

Yes, hybrid mattresses are a good option. Of course, the kind of mattress that you prefer is often a matter of personal preference. However, considering that hybrids combine the comfort and weight distribution capabilities found in memory foam and latex mattresses with the durability and bounce of traditional coil mattresses they offer a multitude of benefits over the stand-alone versions of those mattresses.

How much does a hybrid mattress cost?

A quality hybrid mattress typically costs between 1,500 and 2,500 dollars for a Queen, though hybrids with additional features or natural materials will cost more. Additionally, shopping online and taking advantage of discounts can save you money on a hybrid bed.

How does it feel to sleep on a hybrid bed?

Hybrid beds feel simultaneously cushiony and supportive. When you lie down on a hybrid mattress, you should feel the initial give of the top foam layers, followed by the reassuring support of the spring unit.

The bed should have enough compression to its foam layers to feel comfortable. It may also have a slight bounce to it due to its coils.

Hybrids made with latex foam will likely feel even more responsive than those made with poly foam. If you value springiness over the sensation of being “hugged” by your bed, then a latex hybrid may be best for you.

Are hybrid mattresses good for back pain?

Yes, hybrids can be some of the best mattresses for back pain. They combine the two key ingredients for alleviating upper and lower back aches: pressure relief (from the comfort foam layers) and support (from the coil unit).

If you’re experiencing back pain, you’ll want to be particularly choosy about the mattress you buy. Some hybrid models have features that are meant to address the needs of the different areas of the back, such as zoned coils or specialized areas for lumbar support.

Engage in a sleep trial with your new bed, and ensure that it combines pressure relief and support in such a way that feels beneficial to your symptoms. Of course, you should also consult your doctor before enacting any drastic changes to your bed or lifestyle.

How long does a hybrid mattress last?

Most hybrid beds should last an average of seven years, but the lifespan of a given mattress might be shorter or longer depending on the quality of its materials.

Do hybrid mattresses need a box spring?

No, most modern hybrid mattresses do not require a box spring. They’re designed to be placed on a supportive bed frame by themselves. That said, you should always check with the bed’s manufacturer to see whether you need a box spring or not.

If you have a particularly traditional bed frame with a lack of support in the middle, a box spring may be necessary, or you might opt to use one simply for the extra height and foundation it provides.
