What’s better than a new mattress? A new mattress with a fluffy, luxurious pillow top, of course. Whether it’s a classic pillow top or a cosmopolitan Euro top, this added layer of cushion at the surface of a bed makes a big difference when it comes to how comfy a bed feels.
That said, pillow tops are as varied as mattresses themselves. Some provide a deep, slow-sinking plushness, while others are airier and more responsive. My testing team and I have first-hand experience with all these varieties, and we’ve chosen the best pillow top mattresses for certain sleep needs.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. We’ve done all the work, so you don’t have to!
We look at features that are valuable to consumers, such as temperature control, bounce, edge support, and motion isolation.
We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.
After all this, we present our findings in an easy-to-understand manner, so you can make an informed decision about what kind of bed you want.
What We Look For in a Pillow Top Mattress
Cushioning.
First up, we tested out these beds to see if the pillowy softness on top lives up to its name. While the feeling can vary from mattress to mattress, you want to make sure that the surface of the bed is noticeably comfortable and plush.
Pressure relief.
Pressure relief is an important factor when it comes to a cushioning surface. We want the bed to properly conform to your unique shape and prevent pressure from building up in sensitive areas.
Balanced support and softness.
While pillow tops tend to make beds feel softer, that doesn’t mean it has to feel too soft. You don’t want to sink in too far, but you don’t want to feel like you’re sleeping on a rock, either. (Unless you’re into that, in which case, go crazy.)

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Pillow Top Mattress Overall
With its luxurious, middle-of-the-road feel—combined with the ability to choose the height and firmness you want—it’s no surprise that we gave the Saatva Classic top billing for the best pillow top mattress.
Traditional memory foam materials could make a sleeper feel trapped in the bed, but the Saatva Classic’s more responsive foams are well-balanced by its coil-on-coil support system. This combination should deliver a much gentler cradle nearer to the surface of the bed, including on the plush Euro-style pillow top.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
The Saatva Classic comes in multiple sizes (11.5 inches and 14.5 inches) and firmness models (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm).
- Euro Pillow Top. Quilted foams and organic cotton start out the mattress with a plush and breathable surface.
- Memory Foam Lumbar Crown. A crest of foam supports the lower back while also providing essential pressure relief.
- First Innerspring Unit. The first pocketed system of micro coils conforms to your shape for pressure reduction and motion isolation.
- Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. Within the two coil units is a sturdy wire that promotes proper alignment.
- Second Innerspring Unit. The second coil system has interconnected springs to reduce sagging over time.
- High-Density Foam Rails. Around the perimeter of the mattress, foam rails bolster the edges for support.
What I Liked
- Customizable – With two heights and three firmnesses to choose from, it’s easy to tailor the Saatva Classic to your unique wants and needs. Still unsure of which one to pick? For a true Goldilocks mattress, we think the Luxury Firm should fit a variety of sleeping positions and body types.
- High-end delivery – Saatva does not roll their mattresses into boxes, so they’re able to use materials that compress a little less, and each bed uses foams that source a portion of their oils from sustainable materials. As an added bonus, each bed is professionally delivered and installed for the customer’s convenience.
Potential Drawbacks
- Returns cost extra – Despite the swanky delivery, returns at Saatva will run you $99—other brands often allow you to send back a bed for free..
- Some motion carries – The Saatva Classic does just okay at motion isolation, likely the fault of its two coil units that bring plenty of bounce.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Plush Pillow Top Mattress
A super plush bed doesn’t have to skimp on support, and that’s the case for the WinkBed mattress. It’s a hybrid bed featuring a combination of soft foams and a sturdy innerspring layer. Each model also comes with a Euro top that should provide cozy cushioning at the surface.
The Winkbed is available in four firmness options: Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus. Shoppers who are seeking a super-plush pillow top bed should consider the WinkBed Soft version.
What’s the WinkBed Made Of?
The WinkBed is available in Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus variants. The bed itself is 13.5 inches tall.
- Tencel™ Cover – The mattress’s breathable Tencel™ cover is sustainably derived from Eucalyptus trees.
- Euro Pillow Top – Gel-infused foams inside this first comfort layer should stay pleasantly cool while providing ample pressure relief.
- Additional Foam Layers – A series of specialized foams transition into the sturdy coil unit on the bottom of the mattress.
- Coils – This bed’s pocketed coil unit is made for support, zoned to provide targeted lift, and reinforced around the edges for minimal sagging.
What We Liked
- Lasts long – While some pillow top mattresses tend to break down depending on what’s used to build them, WinkBeds makes durability a cornerstone of their business. That’s why they handcraft and test sturdy mattresses that should deliver consistent comfort and support over years of use. They even have a lifetime warranty to back their beds up.
- Solid edge support – The reinforced edges of the WinkBed hold up well under weight. You should be able to sit around the perimeter of the bed without any egregious sagging.
Potential Drawbacks
- Could isolate motion better – The WinkBed is a hybrid bed, so it’s not the best when it comes to motion isolation. You’ll probably feel your partner’s movements. If you’re concerned about waking up in the middle of the night, consider a mattress with even more foams on top.
- Firmer options may feel too firm – If you’re looking for plush, stick to the Soft model. We feel the Luxury Firm and Firm versions are a little too firm to give you the full cloud-like effect of the pillow top.
Customer Reviews of The WinkBed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Helix Midnight Luxe Earned Best Pillow Top Mattress For Side Sleepers
Combining four types of foam and a layer of wrapped coils, the Helix Midnight Luxe bed should excel at pressure relief and motion isolation while providing breathable zoned support for optimal alignment.
Side sleepers should especially appreciate how the Midnight Luxe keeps their hips and shoulders well-cushioned, maintaining a comfortable balance of softness and support throughout the night.
What’s the Helix Midnight Luxe Made Of?
The Helix Midnight Luxe is 13.5 inches tall with a total of six layers. All foams in its construction are CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1 – Cooling Pillow Top. The Midnight Luxe’s cover features Tencel™, a material that fosters a cooler sleep space, as well as quilted foam that provides cushion at the surface.
- Layer 2 – Helix Responsive Foam. A medium-feel foam that cradles your curves but bounces back easily when you change position.
- Layer 3 – Copper Gel Memory Foam. The infusion of copper in this foam layer helps it to keep cool and serves as a natural antimicrobial barrier.
- Layer 4 – Memory Plus Foam. A dense foam to support the comfort layers above it.
- Layer 5 – Spring Unit. Individually wrapped coils with special zoning to bolster support for the lower back.
- Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. A stable foam foundation.
What We Liked
- Feels cool – A series of cooling features (including cooling fibers in the cover, gel- and copper-infused foams, and individually wrapped coils) keep the Helix Midnight Luxe from trapping heat. Hot sleepers should find a match in this bed.
- Plenty of bounce – The springs in the Helix Midnight Luxe create a good amount of bounce at the surface. As Loren put it, “This bed is also really responsive, so if you toss and you turn, or you and your partner prioritize sex, this is a good option for that.”
Potential Drawbacks
- Pretty pricey – As the name “Luxe” implies, this is a luxurious bed, so the price point is higher. Before sales, a queen will cost you over $2,000.
- Too soft for some – The plush pillow top is great for any lightweight sleepers and side sleepers seeking pressure relief, but it won’t work for everyone. Heavier folks, and especially any who prefer to sleep on their stomach, may find themselves sinking in too far to feel comfortable.
Customer Reviews of The Helix Midnight Luxe
On Helix’s website, the mattress scores 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress for its customized support but have reported that it may not be the best option for those who prefer an exceptionally soft sleep surface.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Best Luxury Pillow Top Mattress
An upgrade from the original DreamCloud model, the DreamCloud Premier adds a soft, luxurious pillow top to what was already a standout bed.
The DreamCloud Premier is a hybrid, combining foam and coils with a medium firmness that should work well for many sleepers (though it is markedly softer than its predecessor). Most notably, its Euro-style pillow top features a cashmere-blend material for the cover. Cashmere is resilient, absorbent, and soft, providing a high-class touch to this mattress.
What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?
The DreamCloud Premier is a whopping 14 inches thick with seven total layers, featuring a mix of coils and CertiPUR-US® certified foams.
- Layer 1 – Top Cover. A cashmere blend cover offers a luxurious feel right at the surface.
- Layer 2 – Memory Foam (1 inch). This memory foam has that classic “hug” response and should easily relieve pressure buildup from the bed’s Euro top.
- Layer 3 – Soft Foam (1 inch). A plush foam also found in the Euro top adds even more cushioning comfort.
- Layer 4 – Transition Foam (2.5 inches). This standard foam layer keeps the comfort layers and coil layer separate.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit (8.5 inches). The pocketed coil unit should provide ample support for good spine alignment. Coils at the edges are thicker to mitigate sagging around the bed’s perimeter.
- Layer 6 – Base Foam (1 inch). The base of the Premier is a conventional foam for extra support and motion isolation.
- Layer 7 – Lower Cover. The bottom cover of this bed is designed to keep it from sliding around. It also features four handles, so you can move it with ease.
What I Liked
- Fair price – Luxury doesn’t have to come at an exorbitant price: sales bring the price of a Premier queen down to just over $1,000.
- Side sleeper’s dream – The pressure-relieving capability of the DreamCloud Premier is A+. Side sleepers should enjoy the soft, cushioning Euro Top and the support provided by the coils underneath.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for stomach sleepers – While this bed is a match for side sleepers, I can’t say the same for stomach sleepers. As one myself, I couldn’t ignore how much my hips sank into the mattress.
- Edges could be better – DreamCloud reinforces the edges on all their beds, but the Premier’s fall short. Laying near them is fine, but when you sit directly on them, they’re going to sag.
Customer Reviews of The DreamCloud Premier
Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the Avocado Green Earned Best Pillow Top Mattress for Hot Sleepers
Avocado wants to bring organic mattresses to eco-conscious sleepers at an affordable price. But they’re also invested in top-down comfort: their hybrid mattress model combines a zoned upcycled steel coil unit with Dunlop latex and an optional Euro-style pillow top.
Additionally, the mattress features multiple cooling measures to keep hot sleepers comfortable. These include a breathable organic cotton cover, heat-resistant latex foam, and airflow-promoting coils.
What’s the Avocado Green Made Of?
The Avocado Green is 11 inches thick.
- Layer 1 – Cover. Organic cotton tops off the bed with a soft, breathable sleep surface.
- Layer 2 – Latex. This layer’s thickness depends on which firmness model you choose, but the Dunlop latex should provide a uniquely bouncy cushion while keeping cool.
- Layer 3 – Coils. Zoned coils made from recycled steel ensure proper lift in places that need it while allowing for pressure relief beneath more sensitive areas. The edges have reinforced coils for a stronger perimeter.
- Layer 4 – Base. A dense latex foundation.
What We Liked
- Good for couples – The Avocado Green has plenty of bounce thanks to its use of latex and coils, yielding ease of movement for sex or just nightly tossing and turning. The motion isolation was also fairly impressive in that regard—you may feel some movement, but not as egregiously as you would on most hybrids.
- Certified safe – Avocado has gone the distance to certify it is an all-natural hybrid, securing certificates from third-party organizations such as GREENGUARD, Made Safe®, and OEKO-TEX®. The cotton used in the cover and flame-retardant wool are both certified organic.
Potential Drawbacks
- Still a high price – The conscientious organic construction of this mattress is a boon for eco-conscious sleepers, but can be a drawback for budget shoppers. Stuart noted that “looking into the mattress can also be a bit pricey, but it’s definitely worth it to get these higher quality materials.”
- The pillow top costs extra – The default option for the Avocado Green is its Firm model, which comes in at $2,000 before sales. But for the Medium and Plush models, which have a pillow top and box top respectively, you’re looking at a $300 or even over-$1,000 upcharge.
Customer Reviews of the Avocado Mattress
The Avocado Green Mattress scores a 4.7 out of 5 stars on the Avocado site. Customers appreciate the Avocado Green mattress for its eco-friendly and organic materials, but some have found it to be on the firmer side, which may not suit those seeking a softer feel.

Why the Saatva Latex Hybrid Earned Best Firm Pillow Top Mattress
Certain sleepers may find that even though they want a firmer mattress, they still want an initial cushion as they lie down. Saatva’s Latex Hybrid features a Euro Top for cushioning while providing firmer support throughout the mattress.
At a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the Saatva Latex Hybrid should work well for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and heavier individuals. Plus, the company gives you 180 days to try out the mattress, and if it’s not to your liking, you can return it.
What’s the Saatva Latex Hybrid Made Of?
The Saatva Latex Hybrid is 12 inches tall.
- Euro Top – An organic cotton cover overlays the cushioning Euro Top, which also features the brand’s antimicrobial Guardin™ treatment.
- Wool Layer – Organic New Zealand wool is a natural fire barrier and temperature-regulating material.
- Latex Layer – The bed’s 5-zone Talalay latex layer should deliver quality pressure relief and support, particularly to the lumbar region. It’s also naturally breathable and hypoallergenic.
- Coil Unit – Pockets coils respond individually to your movements for isolated motion and stellar support.
- Base – A mix of organic cotton and organic wool make up the stable base layer.
What I Liked
- Great for the eco-conscious – This mattress incorporates eco-friendly materials, including recycled coils, organic wool, and natural latex. These “green” components also help the bed resist the buildup of allergens.
- Sturdy edges – During testing, I was able to push directly into the edges of the Saatva Latex Hybrid without any give. You should feel secure laying or sitting on the perimeter of this bed.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for some – The Saatva Latex Hybrid can support a variety of positions, but some sleepers might not be able to find the right amount of sink they need to feel comfortable. Latex doesn’t have the exact same pressure-relieving feel as softer memory foams, meaning some lighter side sleepers or those with pain concerns might prefer a plusher bed.
- Motion carries – This bed has Bounce with a capital B, which unfortunately can translate to decreased motion isolation. If you sleep with a partner, you’re likely to feel each other’s movements.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Latex Hybrid
On Saatva’s website, their Latex Hybrid scores a 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress for its eco-friendly and durable materials but have reported that it is relatively expensive compared to some other latex mattresses.

Why the Brentwood Home Oceano Earned Best Hybrid Pillow Top Mattress
If you’re looking for a pillow top hybrid that stands out among its competition, look no further than the Brentwood Home Oceano. This bed is constructed with eco-friendly materials and priced quite reasonably.
Its pillow top begins with a Eucalyptus-derived Tencel™ cover and a naturally fire-resistant layer of organic wool. A subsequent layer of poly-silk fiber helps with cooling, and the memory foam beneath is augmented with plant-based BioFoam®.
More complex than your typical hybrid, the Oceano mattress features two coil units: a micro-coil unit for quick responsiveness and then a layer of pocketed coils for sturdier support.
What’s the Brentwood Home Oceano Made Of?
The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress has nine layers in its 14-inch construction. All of the foams it uses are CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1 – Tencel™ Cover. A soft, breathable, plant-derived cover.
- Layer 2 – Organic Wool. GOTS-certified organic wool wicks away moisture while acting as a natural fire retardant.
- Layer 3 – Poly-Silk Fiber. This unique blend includes natural silk to keep air flowing through the mattress.
- Layer 4 – BioFoam® Memory Foam. This memory foam is infused with both gel and plant-based BioFoam® for a cool and clean feel, plus soothing contouring.
- Layer 5 – Micro-coil Layer. Miniature coils provide precise support and targeted pushback.
- Layer 6 – Air Luxe® Foam. This airy foam stays cool while relieving pressure.
- Layer 7 – Pocketed Coil Layer. Seven zones of individually wrapped coils (plus a reinforced perimeter) keep you lifted.
- Layer 8 – High-Density Support Foam. A dense layer of foam acts as a sturdy foundation for the coils and comfort layers.
- Layer 9 – Organic Cotton Canvas. Stitched cotton on the bottom of the mattress keeps it from sliding around.
What We Liked
- Cooling features – Innerspring beds are known for great air circulation, and this mattress should sleep cooler than all-foam models (and perhaps most hybrids, thanks to its two coil units). The cover also includes a breathable Tencel™ textile and a layer of organic wool from India to wick away any moisture that may collect.
- Bouncy yet motion isolating – Two coil units produce double the bounce, but both of these being individually wrapped, plus the layers of foam and wool between them, mean that this bed can still absorb a lot of motion. Combination sleepers who share the bed should appreciate this balance.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not for foam fans – This bed has some foam layers but won’t provide the same plush, “hugging” feel as a memory foam bed. However, if you find you need more pressure relief, you could always add Brentwood Home’s memory foam topper for a softer feel.
- Not for some heavy sleepers – This bed’s distinct medium feel should work for a lot of sleepers, but some heavier folks may need something firmer to properly support them.
Customer Reviews of the Brentwood Home Oceano
The Brentwood Oceano Hybrid mattress has a score of 4.6 out of 5 stars on the Brentwood website. Customers appreciate the Brentwood Oceano Luxury Hybrid Mattress for its plush comfort and quality materials, but some have mentioned that it may produce minor noise when bearing weight.

Why the Saatva HD Earned Best Pillow Top Mattress for Heavy People
Sometimes, buying a super-supportive bed might mean sacrificing a cushiony top—but that’s not the case with the Saatva HD.
Saatva designed this mattress around the needs of larger bodies while preserving a lovely, soft surface. Plus-size folks can benefit from the firmer support layers, the zoned support in the Talalay latex, and the comfortable pillow top for balanced sleep.
What’s the Saatva HD Made Of?
The Saatva HD is 15.5 inches thick.
- Euro Top – The Saatva’s pillow top features comfort foam quilted to an organic cotton cover. The pillow top is also treated with the antimicrobial product Guardin™, a benefit for sleepers with allergies.
- Zoned Latex – This natural, breathable latex layer has five zones to balance proper support and pressure relief.
- Memory Foam – Pressure relief is enhanced by this cradling memory foam layer.
- Comfort Foam – This layer bolsters the memory foam one above it.
- Coil Unit – Offset coils respond to your body weight and movements, while a Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire located within the unit promotes alignment and supports the lower back.
- Foam Rails – High-density foam rails line the perimeter so you can utilize the entire surface area of your mattress.
- Base – A stable, sturdy foam foundation.
What I Liked
- Keeps you aligned – The Saatva HD’s zoned latex, coils, and spinal wire all assist with keeping your body elevated and aligned. Back sleepers in particular should find a good match in the Saatva HD if they’re looking to mitigate pain from a saggy mattress.
- Sturdy – At nearly 16 inches thick, this bed is the tallest on the list—and, in my opinion, one of the sturdiest. It should last you a long time.
Potential Drawbacks
- Sub-par motion isolation – I wasn’t totally impressed with this bed’s ability to dampen motion. You’re probably going to feel your partner moving around on this bed.
- Too firm for smaller sleepers – Since this bed is designed with plus-sized sleepers in mind, lighter folks may find they can’t achieve a comfortable sink. This can be a problem if you and your partner are different sizes.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva HD
On Saatva’s site, the Saatva HD has an impressive 4.9 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva HD mattress for its exceptional support for heavier individuals, but some have mentioned that its higher price point may not fit everyone’s budget.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Best Pillow Top Mattress for Back Pain
Shoppers seeking a quality pillow top mattress that can provide a reprieve from back pain should consider the Bear Star Hybrid. The Celliant® fibers in its cover purportedly boost muscle recovery during the night, and could prove soothing for sore backs.
As for the pillow top itself, it’s a combination of pressure-relieving gel foam and a bouncier, responsive foam. The two foams work in tandem to cradle your spine while also allowing for freedom of movement. Underneath, dense support layers create a well-balanced, medium-firm feel.
What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?
The Bear Star Hybrid is 13 inches tall and has five total layers.
- Layer 1 – Cover. The combination of Celliant® and HydroCool® technology makes this cover a star when it comes to regulating temperature at the mattress surface.
- Layer 2 – Serene Gel Foam. Gel keeps this foam layer cool while it relieves unwanted pressure buildup.
- Layer 3 – Responsive Comfort Foam. This breathable foam reacts to your movements for a responsive cushion.
- Layer 4 – Coil Unit. Individually encased coils in the center of the mattress support your body, while stronger coils along the edges keep the perimeter from sagging.
- Layer 5 – High-Density Support Foam. A durable foam base.
What We Liked
- Standout material – This bed features Celliant®, an innovative textile that the makers say can improve your body’s recovery after strenuous activity. Allegedly, the fabric works by converting kinetic energy into infrared light to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow.
- Versatile – This bed’s medium-firm feel should work for a variety of sleeping positions and most body types. The balance of pressure relief and support can work for side sleepers needing plushness, as well as for back and stomach sleepers who need firmer support.
Potential Drawbacks
- Could be bouncier – For a hybrid, this bed is a little less springy than we’d expect. We think the soft foams on top are the culprit.
- Lackluster edges – Despite reinforced coils along the bed’s perimeter, the Bear Star Hybrid’s edge strength is just okay. We don’t think the weaker edges will impact your sleeping experience too much, though, unless you’re sitting or lying directly on the edge of your bed.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid
Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Organic Pillow Top Mattress
Without a pillow top, the Birch Natural is still an impressive and eco-friendly bed. Its construction incorporates materials such as organic cotton, organic wool, natural rayon fibers, and natural Talalay latex.
But with a pillow top, the Birch becomes a plush haven that should provide plenty of comfort after a long day. The 3-inch pillow top is an optional add-on for the bed, and derives its softness from extra layers of latex and organic wool.
What’s the Birch Natural Made Of?
The Birch Natural is 11 inches thick with six layers. If you add the optional pillow top, it’ll be 14 inches thick.
- Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. GOTS-certified organic cotton is super soft and wicks away moisture.
- Layer 2 – Fire Retardant Organic Wool. This wool layer acts as a natural fire barrier.
- Layer 3 – Organic Wool. Another layer of organic wool provides durable insulation, temperature regulation, and comfort.
- Layer 4 – Talalay Latex. Natural latex balances both support and pressure relief with its breathable structure.
- Layer 5 – Coils. Pocketed coils respond individually to your movements, aiding in motion isolation while providing essential lift.
- Layer 6 – Base Wool Layer. A final layer of wool for stability and extra fire protection.
What We Liked
- Solid edges – There are reinforced springs along the long sides of the bed for optimal edge support, a great feature for couples or folks who enjoy spreading out on their mattress.
- Keeps cool – The materials in the Birch Natural aren’t just natural, they’re naturally conducive to temperature regulation. Hot sleepers should appreciate that the mattress isn’t likely to overheat.
Potential Drawbacks
- Too firm for some – The Birch Natural is a little on the firm side thanks to its latex and coils. It won’t “hug” you like a traditional memory foam mattress; instead, you’ll feel more like you’re sleeping on top of it. Adding a pillow top, however, should up the plush factor considerably!
- High price – As with the other mattresses on this list that contain organic components, the price point for the Birch Natural is a bit higher than average. Before any sales or coupons, a queen model comes in at over $2,000, and that’s before you add a pillow top for another $600 or so.
Customer Reviews of the Birch Mattress
According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

What Is a Pillow Top Mattress?
A pillow top upgrades even the most bare-bones innerspring bed into a luxurious sleep experience. A pillow top mattress features a few inches of additional padding (on top of its coil unit or comfort layers) that’s comprehensively sewn on its top layer. This padding is designed to deliver elevated softness, comfort, and contouring.
The composition can vary from mattress to mattress, including memory foam, regular foam, fiberfill, wool, gel, or latex. If the pillow top is integrated within the mattress for a unified appearance, this is referred to as a Euro top. If the cover is lying independently on top of the other layers, it is referred to as a standard pillow top. We’ll get more into the nitty-gritty differences later.
Since most standard innerspring mattresses are typically incapable of delivering that plush sleeping sensation most sleepers prefer, a nice and luxurious pillow top is often added to balance out the feel.
How Does a Pillow Top Mattress Feel?
How a pillow top feels can vary depending on the fill, height, and the mattress construction below it. For the most part, pillow top mattresses are softer than their regular spring and foam counterparts. They provide an extra layer of pressure-relieving cushion for a surface that should mold to your body’s angles and curves. Some might even feel more responsive, depending on what’s beneath the surface.
Most luxury beds feature some form of pillow top, so it’s often touted as a high-end feel that you might experience in, say, a fancy hotel.
Who Should Get a Pillow Top Mattress?
Pillow top mattresses can suit a variety of sleepers, since there’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to their composition. If you’re looking for a bed with a luxurious feel, often on the softer side, a pillow top mattress may be the one to go for.
Pillow Top Mattress Advantages
There are quite a few pros when it comes to using a pillow top mattress. Let’s have a look:
- They offer extra cushioning. As we’ve mentioned, innerspring beds on their own only sport a small comfort layer—and some hybrid beds can have a firmer profile, too. A pillow top adds cushioning to an otherwise unyielding surface.
- They deliver superior motion isolation. Innerspring beds also lack the foams to absorb motion, which means you’ll likely feel your partner’s movements. A thicker pillow top can aid in ensuring motion doesn’t travel across the mattress surface.
- They work for different types of sleepers. Stomach, side, and back sleepers should all be able to find a pillow top solution that works for them. (Those in the “freefaller” position may need one that is firmer.)
Pillow Top Mattress Disadvantages
Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to point out the pros without acknowledging the cons. Pillow top mattresses can have certain drawbacks you may want to consider. Sometimes, though, these can be avoided if you make sure you pick the right type or a quality brand.
- The heat. Some pillow top mattresses can retain a lot of heat, and this could be incredibly troublesome for hot sleepers. This is especially true of pillow tops that feature mostly traditional memory foams or other dense materials. If you’re a hot sleeper set on a pillow top, consider one with a breathable gel or fiber fill. Some cooling mattresses may also be able to offset any heat-trapping effects of a pillow top.
- Indentations. Some pillow top beds are known for forming indentations. This is usually the case for lower-quality beds. We strongly suggest looking for high-end memory foam mattresses or latex. Luckily, we’ve tested all the beds on this list and found them all to be durable options! You can also avoid indentations by regularly rotating your mattress.
- Too soft for some. Some sleepers need a firmer bed, so a pillow top might not be their best match. Stomach sleepers or plus-size folks should consider firmer innerspring or hybrid options to ensure they don’t sink too far.
Euro Top vs. Pillow Top Mattress
The main difference between Euro top and pillow top mattresses is how they look and feel. The Euro top has a flush appearance, while the pillow top aptly resembles a pillow on top of the mattress.
Euro tops tend to have a more streamlined appearance because of their “tighter” construction, and are sometimes more expensive. They tend to last longer than pillow tops because they don’t have the space to sag or form indentations. Their edges can also be stronger since they lay flush against the topmost mattress layer.
Of course, a pillow top is going to feel more… pillowy. They tend to have a more consistent cushiony feel, while a Euro top will feel firmer along the edges.
Apart from that, though, both usually bring superior comfort and enhanced sleeping sensations for all sleeping positions.
Tight Top Mattress
A third type of mattress top, called a tight top, is just as it sounds. There isn’t any extra fill or cushioning, so it lays flat on the mattress surface. These mattresses will have a firmer surface, so they differ greatly from pillow top and Euro top beds—don’t be fooled by the name!
How to Choose the Right Pillow Top Bed
Materials
The first thing that you would have to consider are the materials. This is true for both the pillow top and the mattress itself.
Make sure whatever mattress you choose is of a high quality, whether it’s made from foams, springs, or a combination of both. A high quality latex mattress can be a great alternative if you sleep very hot—since heat retention can be a problem when it comes to a pillow top mattress. Therefore, the materials that make up the fill of the pillow top play an important role here.
As a general rule, foams are going to feel dense and cushioning, but may trap heat. Fibers, especially those that wick away heat and moisture, can be a more breathable option. Wool can act as a natural fire barrier and insulator. Gel can be infused into the pillow top to aid in cooling. Overall, there’s plenty to consider when it comes to your needs and preferences.
Additionally, you can decide whether you prefer a pillow top or euro top, since it can have an impact on the overall comfort.
Pillow Top Thickness
Pillow tops vary in their height. They can be anywhere from shorter than an inch to nearly 5 inches thick. This will affect not only the feel but the height of your mattress. The thicker a pillow top, the more cushion you’ll get, but also the more potential for sagging as time goes on.
Firmness
Pillow tops are usually implemented to make firm beds feel softer. So, you should expect a bed to feel less firm if it has a pillow top. That’s the essence of it – delivering a nice balanced feel between the pronounced bounce of the innerspring bed and the plushness of the pillow top.
Of course, the most important thing to consider here is the support. Failing to pick the right pillow top mattress could result in improper spinal alignment. Pay attention to the mattress construction underneath the pillow top, rather than just the pillow top itself, to determine how soft or firm the bed will feel.
Looking to learn more? Check out our Mattress Firmness Guide.
Sleeping Position
Your sleeping position matters for any mattress, not just a pillow top mattress. As a rule, side sleepers should consider a softer bed for pressure relief, back sleepers might prefer a medium-feel bed for balanced support and cushioning, and stomach sleepers are best suited to firm beds to reduce unwanted sinking. Combination sleepers, who switch between these, should choose a bouncier bed for easier repositioning.
Since pillow tops can make beds feel plusher, it’s important to consider their effect on the mattress surface. We still think that any sleeping position can find a pillow top mattress suited to their needs.
Sharing the Bed
Couples have plenty to consider when it comes to choosing a mattress. After all, you’re not just worried about one person’s preferences. Pillow tops, thankfully, excel in motion isolation. This means that restless sleepers won’t wake their partners with their tossing and turning.
The downside for couples is that some pillow tops may make the bed feel less springy, making it harder to move around for sex or getting in and out of bed. Sometimes the edges of the mattress can also feel weaker, rendering it more difficult to make use of the full surface area.
Budget
Now, price is important for any big purchase, and a pillow top mattress is no exception. The price range of these is rather broad depending on the brand, materials, as well as the remaining construction of the bed. Typically, you’d have a choice between a variety of the Most Affordable Mattresses and The Luxury Mattresses, so it’s all up to you and the amount of money that you want to spend.
View Our Guide: How Much Does a Mattress Cost
Warranty
A warranty can be useful for a pillow top since it may start to sag as time goes on. Most brands offer a 10-year limited warranty, while others would go so far as to offer 25 years. Generally, your mattress should hold up for 10 years, so a longer warranty may be of varying importance to you.
Pillow Top vs. Other Mattress Types
Pillow Top vs. Memory Foam
Pillow top mattresses and memory foam mattresses could not be further apart. While memory foam mattresses are made entirely of, you guessed it, foam, pillow top beds feature a mix of coils, foam, and a cushy top. Memory foam beds are more suited to folks who want to sink deep into their mattress and relieve pressure.
View our comparison to find out more: Memory Foam vs. Pillow Top.
Pillow Top vs. Latex
Latex, derived from rubber tree sap, is a super bouncy material that’s often used in eco-friendly mattresses. Theoretically, a latex mattress could feature a pillow top. Overall, a latex mattress is going to feel more responsive, perhaps a touch firmer, and last longer than a pillow top.
Pillow Top vs. Hybrid / Innerspring
If you take the pillow top off a mattress, what you’re left with is essentially a regular old innerspring or hybrid bed. These mattresses feature strong coils plus some sort of comfort layer on top. (These comfort layers will be thicker or more numerous in a hybrid bed.) A pillow top, simply put, is an easy upgrade to a spring bed, providing extra cushion.
Does a Pillow Top Mattress Make a Difference?
Whether or not a pillow top affects your sleep experience can ultimately only be determined by you. However, during testing, I could definitely feel and reap the benefits of the pillow top surface. If you’re looking to upgrade, a pillow top bed can be an easy way to bring the luxury of a hotel mattress to your bedroom at home.
Pillow Top Mattress FAQs
What is the average lifespan of a pillow top mattress?
The lifespan of a pillow top mattress depends on its construction. For example, does it use low or high-density foam in the pillow top? High-density foam will last longer.
A pillow top mattress’ durability can also depend on who is sleeping on it because more weight will put more pressure on the mattress overall. Rotating the mattress can also help prevent divots.
Realistically, a pillow top mattress can last 7 to 10 years if properly cared for.
Why is my pillow top mattress too hot?
The most common reason for your mattress sleeping too hot is the material. Pillow top mattresses can receive a lot of complaints about the lack of proper thermal regulation when they are made of regular foam or traditional high-density memory foam. These materials, in general, lack the proper abilities to dissipate heat but instead, they retain it, leading to a lot of hot nights. Opt for a pillow top with a more breathable fiber fill or cooling gel–or consider a cooling mattress.
How do I fix a lumpy pillow top mattress?
If your pillow top mattress is lumpy, you can try to distribute the lump throughout the cover evenly; usually, it’s not hard, and you can do so with gradual movements of your hands. You may also need to look into the warranty in this case.
To help prevent this from happening, you can consider purchasing a pillow top mattress that has latex as part of the composition. This material should be one of the best for preventing lumps.
Is a pillow top mattress good for back sleepers?
We think so! Back sleepers may appreciate the cushioning a pillow top mattress can offer alongside the layers and/or springs below that bring support and promote alignment. However, it’s ultimately a matter of personal preference.
Do pillow top mattresses wear out faster?
Sagging is a common problem for most mattresses, and the best mattresses that won’t sag will be of a higher quality with sturdy materials. This is true for pillow tops. The longer you have your pillow top mattress, the longer it’s likely to show signs of use, like indentations. Whether or not this shows faster than your average mattress will depend on the bed itself, but there are plenty of things you can do to prevent or fix wear and tear once you notice it.
What firmness is a pillow top mattress?
The firmness of a pillow top mattress will likely depend on the firmness of the mattress construction itself. But, as a general rule of thumb, a pillow top tends to make a bed feel softer at the surface.
What is the best filling for a pillow top mattress?
Pillow top beds can be filled with a variety of materials, including (but not limited to) foams, fibers, wool, or even latex in some cases. The best filling will depend on your preferences for things like comfort, cooling, and durability.
Conclusion
All in all, pillow tops, regardless of whether you go for a standard or a euro-style one, are a great choice. If you prefer a luxurious, soft, and rather plushy sleeping surface with the expressed bounce and push-back of coils, these beds may be your best option.
They can be super comfortable and they strike a nice balance between softness and firmness, hence why so many prefer them! Of course, finding the right one is always a matter of some proper research. So, we hope we got most of the hard stuff out of the way for you, and you’re able to choose the best pillow top mattress for your needs.
