Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
All manufacturers would have you believe that their product is the best of the best, but at Sleep Advisor, we want to test their claims for ourselves. Therefore, we put bedroom accessories such as pillows through a host of tests and assess how we feel when using them. We evaluated the Coop Sleep Goods Original for factors such as construction and durability, and we also present you with a comprehensive overview of how they performed for various sleep positions.
What is the Coop Sleep Goods Original Pillow Made of?
Cover
The pillow cover is made Lultra™, a breathable blend of polyester and bamboo-derived viscose rayon. It helps wick away moisture and provides a cooling element to the pillow.
Core
The core of the Coop Sleep Goods Original is made up of cross-cut, irregularly-shaped squares and rectangles of hypoallergenic memory foam and microfiber fill. By cutting the foam, sleepers should experience the support found in memory foam pillows but with increased airflow. Air circulation helps dissipate trapped body heat, which can be a complaint with solid blocks of memory foam.
Coop Sleep Goods Original Pillow Firmness & Feel
Firmness
Coop Sleep Goods states that the Original is medium-firm, and we agree that this pillow feels like a medium-firm option. This firmness is likely to appeal to a wide variety of sleepers because it should be thought of as not too soft nor too hard, allowing for both gentle contouring and supportive spinal alignment.
Feel
You’ll first be met with a soft, cool pillow cover that has a silky feel. The cover’s stitched triangle designs are subtle but add a layer of texture. Although the memory foam is shredded, it presents as more of a solid piece but with more adjustability. Additionally, the foam is responsive and quickly bounces back into shape when a sleeper changes position.
If this pillow starts to feel like it is going flat, you can throw it in the dryer for 10 minutes, and it should fluff up. Even if you don’t think that it is feeling flat, the manufacturer recommends that you do this about once a month to achieve consistent performance.
Loft
The loft of a pillow refers to its height. The loft plays an important role in spinal alignment and how high or low your pillow should be greatly depends on your sleep position.
Side sleepers tend to do best with pillows that have a high loft, folks who sleep on their backs are typically in the most optimal position with a pillow of medium height, and dedicated stomach sleepers will normally want to snuggle up with a low pillow. Given the adjustability of this pillow, it could serve all three sleep positions. In its original state (no fill added or subtracted), it is approximately 8 inches tall.
Weight (Density of the Pillow)
In its original state, the Coop Sleep Goods Original pillow weighs 3.3 pounds. It comes with an additional half-pound of fill, which can be added to its core and will likely increase the pillow’s weight. Additionally, removing fill will lower the weight some.
Sleeping on the Coop Home Goods Original Pillow
The Sleep Advisor team appreciates the adjustable versatility of this pillow. It should work for all three sleep positions, but stomach sleepers will likely have to take out a large portion of the fill so that their head isn’t uncomfortably high.
If you’re a stomach sleeper and are okay with removing a majority of the shredded memory foam, this pillow should still work well. However, it may be too tedious and messy for some, and some stomach sleepers may still find that it is too firm even after removing fill.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers typically need a higher loft on the pillow, and the Coop Home Goods Original should serve light and average-weight side sleepers well in its original state. Those with broader shoulders should be able to add the additional foam that comes with each pillow to get an optimal fit for them.

Back Sleepers
The supportive shredded memory foam should provide gentle cradling and ample support for optimal head and neck alignment. The adjustable core allows back sleepers to find their ideal loft.

Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers tend to do best on flat pillows that won’t cause their neck to over-extend. The foam can be taken out of this pillow to procure a flatter pillow. However, some stomach sleepers may find that even after taking out a good bit of fill, this pillow is still too firm for their comfort.

Temperature
4/5
Although memory foam has a reputation for being hot, the use of shredded memory foam helps with temperature regulation because more air can circulate to cool things down. Additionally, the pillow’s cover adds cooling and moisture-wicking properties, which should also help keep sleepers from overheating. Here you can read more about cooling pillows.
Support
4/5
The memory foam is crosscut, but it tends to offer the same kind of support as memory foam pillows that are made with one solid block. Side and back sleepers should find that this pillow provides the kind of gentle contouring as traditional memory foam pillows. It should provide the kind of elevation needed for good spinal alignment for back and side sleepers. However, some may find that their head sinks too far down.
Durability
4/5
The Coop Sleep Goods Original pillow is made with quality materials, which means it should last for a long time. The polyester and bamboo blend cover feels soft and silky but is actually a formidable material. Additionally, memory foam is a long-lasting product, and this pillow comes with an additional half pound of filling.
Comfort
4/5
Fans of memory foam should find this pillow comfortable. It is likely to provide most sleepers with gentle contouring support. Furthermore, it is responsive so those who change positions throughout the night will find that this pillow quickly regains its shape. However, some may find that it is too firm for their liking.
Off-Gassing
3/5
This pillow arrives compressed in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag. After it’s removed from the bag, it will take a bit to expand to its full size. This can happen either by allowing the pillow to take shape on its own or toss it in the dryer on low for about 10 minutes.
Since it’s compressed for shipping, you may notice a chemical smell known as off-gassing as it expands. Placing the pillow in a well-ventilated room, removing the outer cover, and placing the pillow in the sunlight or throwing it in the dryer with a dryer sheet should speed up the off-gassing process.
Allergens
5/5
Neither the blended polyester and bamboo cover nor the memory foam filling should cause any allergy flare-ups. The company lists this pillow as hypoallergenic, and it can be machine washed and dried, which can help eliminate allergens.
Cleaning & Care
5/5
The cover and the inner pillow are completely machine washable. Coop Sleep Goods states that washing the entire pillow once a year is optimal, but you can wash the cover more often. Also, if your pillow starts to flatten, you can toss it in the dryer to fluff it back up.
Sleep Trial & Warranty
4/5
To give you plenty of time to try out the adjustability of this pillow, Coop Sleep Goods offers a 100-night sleep trial. If you decide that this pillow isn’t for you, you can return it for free during the trial period. However, if it is a good fit for you, you will have a 5-year warranty.

Our Final Thoughts on the Coop Sleep Goods Original Pillow
Adjustable pillows provide a lot of versatility, which makes them a solid pick for varying sleep positions. We found that it worked better for side and back sleepers because although stomach sleepers, who generally do best with flatter pillows, can take out a good bit of filling, it may still be too firm for them.
We also think this could be a good option for people who like memory foam but may shy away from it because of its tendency to retain heat since the brand takes measures to help this pillow sleep cooler. Overall, this is a solid, comfortable, and supportive pillow that offers sleepers a high-end product at an affordable price. Our overall score for this product is 4.1 out of 5.
