Shopping for a new bed and unsure whether a hybrid or all-foam model will best suit your needs? We get you. That’s why we’re comparing the all-foam Lull and hybrid DreamCloud models, to help you figure out which one will give you a better night’s sleep.

The Lull is a 10-inch high-quality memory foam mattress, while the DreamCloud and its 16-inch profile offer a mix of foam layers and a supportive innerspring unit. We tested both mattresses for important features like firmness, motion isolation, cooling, and pressure relief. Read on to see which mattress will best suit you and your budget.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

Our firmness rating ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 being super soft and 10 being incredibly firm. The Lull comes in at 6 out of 10, making it a medium-firm mattress, while the DreamCloud is slightly softer, at a 5.5.

The soft, quilted cover adds to the DreamCloud’s cushioning qualities, making it suitable for side sleepers who need pressure relief in the hips and shoulders.

Medium-firm mattresses like the Lull often suit combination sleepers, who need the extra support to aid in repositioning.

Support

The Lull features multiple layers of supportive foam that should help keep your spine in a healthy position, though heavyweight stomach sleepers may find better support from a firmer mattress.

Support in the DreamCloud comes from three foam layers and an innerspring unit with zoned support, which work together to keep you in alignment. However, the bed may be too soft to keep stomach sleepers’ hips in alignment, unless you’re incredibly lightweight.

Feel

Both beds arrived compressed in a box, with the Lull taking 24-48 hours to fully expand, and the DreamCloud taking up to 72 hours.

Each of these beds come with soft covers, which include DreamCloud’s plush, cashmere-blend fabric, and the Lull’s breathable, cool-to-the-touch poly-blend.

Pressing down on the DreamCloud, you’ll find cushioning that eases you down into the support layers, with the Lull offering medium-level responsiveness from its top layer of memory foam.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

The Lull doesn’t offer much in the way of bounce, which may be an issue for sexually active partners who prefer a more responsive mattress. When testing the Lull, we found some sinkage on the side of the bed, which is to be expected from a memory foam model, though it’s not as noticeable as some of its competitors.

The DreamCloud offers an element of bounce, thanks to its pocketed coil unit, though as it’s a hybrid, there isn’t as much bounce as a traditional innerspring mattress. However, it offers a good balance of body contouring and responsiveness. Edge support is exceptional, thanks to reinforced coils around the perimeter.

Comparing Motion Transfer

A mattress’ ability to isolate motion is important for light sleepers who share their bed with a restless pet or partner. All-foam models tend to do better at motion isolation, and the Lull is no exception — our tests found minimal motion transfer when dropping weighted objects beside an object and jumping on the bed.

Innerspring beds tend to score lower in motion isolation tests, but the DreamCloud has multiple memory foam layers atop its coil unit, which help absorb movement. However, as it’s a softer bed, you’re likely to feel a bit more movement from your partner than you would on a firmer, foam bed like the Lull.

Comparing Cooling

Memory foam mattresses are notorious for trapping heat, but the Lull is constructed with a breathable top cover and a 1.5-inch gel-infused foam layer, which work together to prevent heat from building up in the foam.

Along with an inch of gel-infused memory foam, the DreamCloud features individually-wrapped coils in the innerspring unit to help promote airflow and breathability, allowing your body temperature to regulate so you don’t break a sweat. We recommend both beds for hot sleepers who can’t get enough of the body-contouring feel of memory foam.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

Lull Construction

The 10-inch Lull mattress starts with a soft, breathable polyester and rayon top cover that’s designed to allow air to flow through, which should help keep you cool. This is followed by three layers of foam, offering gentle body contouring and support.

• The top layer is made from 1.5 inches of gel-infused memory foam, engineered to help disperse body heat, rather than trap it like traditional memory foam tends to. This layer is designed to cradle your body, offering relief from achy joints.
• The middle transition layer features 1.5 inches of Therapeutic Support foam, to help keep your spine in alignment and prevent you from sinking too far into the mattress.
• The base layer is a 7-inch durable foam unit, which offers even more support for your body, as well as providing a strong foundation for the rest of the mattress.

DreamCloud Construction

The DreamCloud is a 14-inch hybrid, crafted with a luxurious, cashmere-blend cover, that feels plush to the touch. Below this is three layers of foam and an 8.5-inch innerspring unit, featuring individually-wrapped coils to allow airflow and targeted support.

• Stitched into the cover is 1.5 inches of plush foam, to provide cushioning comfort and joint support.
• The second layer features an inch of memory foam, which is infused with gel to keep you cool. This layer also offers responsive contouring and pressure relief.
• The transition layer is engineered with 2 inches of standard foam, working as the first support layer, as well as helping to ease you into the firm coil unit below.
• The 8.5-inch innerspring unit is the bed’s main support layer, made with individually-pocketed coils to help with motion isolation as well as airflow, which helps keep the mattress (and you) from overheating.
• The base layer features an inch of firm support foam, helping to keep everything above it in place.
• The lower cover is shift-resistant to help prevent the mattress from sliding around. It also features four handles, allowing you to move the bed with ease.
