Two hybrids born from two well-established companies battle it out in our WinkBed vs Helix comparison. Helix understands every sleeper has unique needs, so they’ve designed a useful quiz to guide shoppers to a mattress made with their preferences in mind. On the other hand, WinkBed delivers luxury in a box, and is devoted to caring for their consumers and the environment through clean materials.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

Our comfort (firmness) scale determines the feel of each product by ranking them between 1-10, with 10 being firm as a plank of wood. Both brands offer multiple comfort options that span a wide range of comfort feels.

WinkBed’s Luxury Firm sits at a medium-firm 6.5. The company’s Softer mattress earned a 4.5, the Firmer a 7.5, and the Plus ranks at 8.

Support

Both of these mattresses utilize a coil system as their primary source of support. Each of Helix’s standard models features hundreds of individual coils, while the WinkBed has a dual-coil system. Both mattresses should offer plenty of support to a wide range of sleepers, but the WinkBed is the most supportive overall, especially in the lumbar region, since it features an extra set of coils around the perimeter. This also increases its edge support, which may make the WinkBed more appealing to couples who want to utilize the full surface of the mattress.

Feel

Both brands boast quickly responding materials and a hybrid feel due to their layers of foam combined with coil systems. However, the Midnight should offer a deeper sink with more enhanced pressure relief since it contains more foam layers than the WinkBed. Although the WinkBed has a hybrid construction, this mattress should feel more like a traditional innerspring bed where you feel more on top of the mattress rather than in it.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

The sinkage levels should vary across the different Helix models. Some may offer a deep hug while others, like the Midnight, present more of a gentle cradle.
The softer options should have minimal bounce, while the firmer ones should be more moderate. The Helix Midnight should have moderate bounce, allowing for easy repositioning.

Similar to the Helix Midnight, the WinkBed should provide a gentle cradle with minimal bounce in the upper comfort layers and a deeper bounce once the coils become activated. This should also aid combination sleepers when changing positions.

However, sleepers may experience more of a deeper sink and hugging sensation with the Helix Midnight since it contains more foam layers.

Comparing Motion Transfer

Both mattresses should provide minimal motion transfer when compared to other bed-in-a-box hybrid products. There may be more movement than a traditional all-foam mattress, but less than what is typically experienced in a classic innerspring mattress as the foam materials should help dampen any vibrations felt from the coils. This should benefit couples and co-sleepers with restless partners or pets.

If we had to pick one, we’d say that Helix performs slightly better at motion transfer. No matter which Helix model you choose, it comes with at least two foam comfort layers which should dampen movement more than the WinkBed’s foam Euro top.

Comparing Cooling

We’re happy to report that both the WinkBed and Helix excel at cooling. Similar to most hybrid mattresses, their coil bases leave plenty of room for airflow so that heat doesn’t get trapped up top in the foam layers.

Each of Helix’s standard models should offer a similar level of cooling since they all utilize a coil base with a breathable cover. In contrast, the WinkBed offers a few more features designed specifically for cooling like a Tencel cover and gel-infused Euro top. The WinkBed also features Triple Layer Heat Disperse™ Tech which, like the name suggests, helps disperse heat away from the mattress.

Therefore, the WinkBed may sleep a bit cooler than the Helix Midnight, making it a better choice for extra hot sleepers.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

WinkBed Construction

Although WinkBeds offers four different options for its flagship mattress, we’ll focus on the Luxury Firm’s construction.
The cover features a sustainable Tencel® textile made from Eucalyptus trees. The Luxury Firm bed measures 13.5 inches in height, though there may be some slight variation among the different firmness options.

• The top layer consists of a plush Euro top that features 2 inches of pressure-relieving, gel-infused Hypersoft foam.
• The second layer contains 2.5 inches of SupportCell foam. This should give you more comfort while you transition into the coil layer.
• The innerspring layer holds 8-inch tall pocketed coils.These springs are zoned to provide pressure relief or support where the body needs it most.
• The sides of the mattress feature the Extra-Edge™ Support system which uses an additional layer of coils for extra sturdiness around the perimeter. This helps you sit and sleep more securely near the edge of the bed.
• The base layer consists of 1 inches of poly foam that should minimize motion transfer by absorbing movement from the upper layer of coils.

Note: The construction of the Plus mattress is slightly different to accommodate a higher weight limit.

Helix Construction

Helix provides 9 different bed-in-a-box hybrids with 6 Luxe versions, along with a big-and-tall option. We are focusing on the Helix Midnight model, as that is a fairly flexible medium comfort option that should work well for many sleepers.

The Standard beds feature two covers, the top one a polyester, the bottom a breathable Jersey knit. Luxe beds come with a pillow top and the company’s proprietary Ultra-Cool cover which contains phase-changing technology. The Standard beds are 12 inches tall, while the Luxe versions measure 14 inches.

• The first layer contains 2 inches of Helix Memory Plus Foam. This is a polyurethane-blended latex alternative that’s designed to gently contour to the body for pressure relief.
• The second layer contains a 1-inch High-Grade Polyfoam that should further enhance this bed’s pressure relieving effects.
• The third layer holds an 8-inch wrapped coil system. The springs are pocketed which allows them to react individually to your weight and movements.
• The base layer consists of 1 inch of DurDense Foam. This should minimize sleep disruption by absorbing motion transfer from the above coils.

Note: The basic materials in each mattress model should be similar, though construction may vary slightly across each comfort option.

Comparing Company Policies & Price

• Warranty – The WinkBed comes with a lifetime warranty, while Helix offers a 10-year limited warranty of their standard beds and a 15-year limited warranty for their Luxe and Plus options.
• Shipping – Both Helix and WinkBeds offer free shipping within the U.S.
• Trial Period – Helix offers a 100-night trial, while WinkBeds offers a 120 night trial. Both brands ask you to try out the mattress for 30 nights before initiating a return.
• Returns – Returns are free with either mattress, though you have a bit longer to decide whether you want to return with the WinkBed.
• Price – The WinkBed mattress is priced higher than any of Helix’s standard models, though its price point is more on par with Helix’s Luxe mattresses which go for a couple hundred more than their standard beds. Although WinkBeds is priced higher, the mattress does come with eco-friendly, premium materials.
