Our In-Depth Happsy Bed Review for 2024

Are you trying to choose between an eco-friendly bed and an affordable one? What if we told you that you don’t have to choose?

Happsy has both qualities in one, offering eco-friendly, organic materials and a lower-than-average price. This mattress provides a chemical-free experience and is a unique innerspring model.

Michael from our mattress testing team tried this bed in person, evaluating its feel, firmness, and overall performance. He helped us score its pressure-relieving capabilities, bounce, motion isolation, and more. The mattress comes with an optional latex pillow top, but we focused more on how it feels without the topper. We also tested the Medium-Firm model, though this bed is also available in Plush.

Who We Recommend The Happsy For:

  • Eco-friendly consumers– Happsy uses safe and sustainable materials and business practices throughout their manufacturing process. The wool, latex, and cotton used in this bed are certified by third-party organizations.
  • Budget shoppers – Organic materials, including latex, are typically found in more expensive mattresses. However, Happsy uses Dunlop latex to keep their prices low, as this latex is cheaper to produce.
  • Hot sleepers – We think Happsy is a good option for hot sleepers because it has latex, wool, and cotton, all of which are breathable materials. Plus, the innerspring base allows plenty of airflow to keep the mattress cool.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Happsy For:

  • People after a foam bed – This mattress has an innerspring base, which helps with bounce, airflow, and support. However, if you’re looking for a slow-responding memory foam mattress, this is not it.
  • Committed side sleepers – Michael noted that he felt okay lying on his side. He’s about 180 pounds, so if you’re a lighter side sleeper, you may want to go for that pillow top.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10

Mattress Firmness Level 6

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. This way, it’s easier for sleepers to understand just how firm a mattress is. When it comes to Happsy, we think it’s at a 6 out of 10. As Michael explained, “This is a medium feel bed, and it’s gonna fit a broad scope of sleepers, leaving them in that feeling of a gentle cradle.”

With the pillow top, the mattress feels softer and allows somewhat more sinkage.

How Does It Feel?

Lying on the bed, you can feel that medium firmness we talked about. There’s a gentle cradle coming from the comfort layer, helping ease pressure and tension in sensitive areas.

As you push further into the bed, you should feel a quick response and bounce from the innerspring coils. However, we didn’t bottom out to the coils. Happsy has a few inches of latex to prevent you from feeling the coils underneath.

What We Like About the Happsy

  • The affordability – This organic mattress is an affordable option for budget shoppers. It doesn’t often happen that we come across a mattress with organic, eco-friendly materials at an affordable price.
  • The trial and warranty – Happsy comes with a 20-year warranty and a 120-night trial, giving sleepers enough time to test how the mattress feels. We think these are good numbers, given the lower price point.
  • Multiple certifications – As mentioned, the wool, cotton, and latex are all certified for safety and sustainability, which is excellent news for eco-conscious shoppers.

Our Happsy Complaints

  • Not the best motion isolation – As is common with bouncy beds, Happsy lacks good motion isolation. This can be a drawback for co-sleepers since one person’s movements can travel to the other side of the mattress, which can disturb the other person, particularly if they’re a light sleeper.
  • The price of the topper – We love that there’s an optional topper to add to the mattress, but some people may be put off by its price. This affordable mattress is only affordable if you choose not to use the topper, which costs around 250 dollars for the smallest Twin size.

Testing the Happsy Mattress: How It Performed

When we test mattresses, the first thing our team focuses on is the overall feel. We switch positions to see how the mattress feels for back, side, and stomach sleeping, especially in categories like support and pressure relief. We also check its motion-isolating capabilities, edge support, temperature regulation, and more.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

Happsy doesn’t recommend this mattress for people over 400 pounds. Also, sleepers over 230 pounds are likely to experience it as softer than it actually is for average-weight people, more so if they opt for the pillow top addition. Overall, we’d say it fits a range of sleepers, but firmness and feel are subjective, so it will work for some sleep positions and body types more than others.

WeightSide SleepersIconBack SleepersIconStomach SleepersIcon
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs)☆☆☆★★☆★★★
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)★☆☆★★★★★☆
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs)★★☆★★☆☆☆☆

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Happsy comes in two firmness options, Medium-Firm and Plush. We’d say lightweight side sleepers are better off with the softer one. The Medium-Firm model we tested may not be the best to relieve pressure for side sleepers under 130 pounds.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers like Michael may want something softer, but those closer to 230 should like the Happsy just right. If you’re a dedicated side sleeper, we suggest you try Happsy with the optional pillow top.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers should experience a deeper cradle, helping relieve pressure from the hips, knees, and shoulders. However, those closer to 300 pounds may prefer a hybrid with more foam layers they can sink into and avoid hitting the coils.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers who like firmer beds should like this Happsy, offering a balance of support and cradling. However, some may still prefer the Plush model as it allows more sinkage.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – “I can feel the latex molding to the small of my back, keeping me both supported and comfortable,” Michael noted. Since Michael is an average-weight sleeper himself, we think this mattress could be ideal for average-weight back sleepers.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – We think that many heavyweight back sleepers are likely to enjoy the Happsy contouring their back without letting them sink too deeply. The latex plays a crucial role here as it prevents sleepers from bottoming out to the coils.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should feel nicely supported by the Happsy as the medium-firm feel ensures proper sleeping posture with your spine in neutral.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – As Michael said, “It’s firm enough to keep my hips supported but soft enough that I feel cozy lying here.” Those weighing closer to 230 pounds, though, may sink deeper, in which case we’d recommend a firmer mattress.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers need a firmer bed that can provide more support for the hips and shoulders to stay aligned.

Pressure Relief

3.5/5

Happsy is designed to relieve pressure where you need it the most, all without losing support. It does this with the combination of pocketed coils and latex, but if you need more relief, you can get the optional pillow top or even the Plush model.

The pillow top adds a few inches of pressure relief as it makes the Happsy softer. The Happsy Medium-Firm model we tested does well even without the pillow top, but again, pressure relief really depends on your weight as it determines how deep of a cradle you’ll experience.

Is the Happsy Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

Happsy performs well in combining pressure relief and support, which in turn should make it good for pain relief. The innerspring unit combined with the medium-firm feel makes this mattress excellent for keeping your spine neutral. Although some sleepers may sink more or less, we think that most should feel well-supported in various sleeping positions.

Back Pain

People with back pain need a mattress that can support the hips and lower back while also allowing enough sinkage to relieve tension. We think the Happsy mattress is one such model, combining coils with responsive latex. The bouncy construction makes it easier to move from your back into other sleeping positions, even if you struggle with lower back pain. Plus, the medium-firm feel ensures a balance of support and relief around the small of your back.

However, heavyweight stomach sleepers will want something more firm and supportive to ensure their hips remain lifted to prevent lower back pain.

Hip Pain

Hip pain is tricky to sleep with, especially if you’re a side sleeper. Side sleepers with hip pain typically enjoy softer beds, so we think you should try the Plush Happsy model. Also, consider adding the pillow top for some more softness around the pressure points.

The Medium-Fim model we tested feels nice around the hips if you’re an average-weight sleeper. If you’re significantly lighter, though, we’d suggest a softer bed, and if you’re over 300 pounds, we’d suggest a firmer hybrid bed with more substantial foam layering.

Shoulder Pain

Sleepers with shoulder pain should sleep on their back to avoid putting pressure on the shoulder that hurts. The Happsy should help relieve some of that pain by offering a gentle cradle, along with coils that do a good job of supporting your body alignment. However, if you must sleep on the side, we suggest you go for the pillow top or Plush model, which will offer more cradling for the sensitive shoulder.

Support

4/5

Happsy is an innerspring mattress, and they’re known for good support. This bed offers targeted support using pocketed coils that support your body where you need it the most. This may be different for everyone, which is why the coils are individually pocketed to move separately, adapting to different body types.

We noticed the coils don’t compress across a wide surface area, but offer variable support in different body parts. This makes Happsy a versatile bed, even with the slightly firmer feel.

Motion Transfer

3/5

Happsy doesn’t perform the best when it comes to isolating motion, but it also doesn’t perform the worst. We’d say its motion-isolating capabilities are average, especially when you consider the tall coils and a rather thin layer of latex and wool on top.

If you watched Michael’s video review, you saw just how much the cup moves when he moves and jumps on the other side of the bed. This doe’t have to be a dealbreaker, but it may be for couples in which one person is a light sleeper and the other is a restless one.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

4/5

Hot sleepers should enjoy the innerspring construction as the coils foster plenty of airflow. On top of that, this mattress has latex and wool, both of which are excellent for regulating temperature and keeping the mattress cool. With that in mind, this isn’t exactly a cooling mattress since it doesn’t have any advanced cooling features like a specialty cover, for example.

While it should be fine for most, those who sleep extra hot may prefer something more cooling.

Bounce

5/5

Latex itself is quite bouncy and responsive — more so when combined with innerspring coils. “The responsiveness is great for repositioning,” according to Michael. Not only that, but it’s also great for couples who are sexually active and can make it easier to get in and out of bed.

Edge Support

5/5

Happsy has a reinforced perimeter, which helps keep the edges from collapsing when you sit or sleep in this area. Hybrid and innerspring beds usually do well in this category, but that’s not a hard-written rule if it’s a bed-in-a-box mattress.

As Michael demonstrated, Happsy does well, and we don’t think anyone would feel like they’re sliding off the bed if they come near the edge. “Sleepers can sit or sleep here and remain perfectly supported,” he added.

Performance for Couples

3/5

We think couples should enjoy the reinforced edges as the mattress allows them to maximize their sleeping space. Additionally, most couples who are sexually active should like the bounce from the coils and latex. Although it doesn’t have the best motion isolation, it shouldn’t be an issue if you and your significant other have the same sleeping habits and schedule.

Preference-Based Features

  • Bed-in-a-Box Shipping

Happsy offers free shipping in the continental United States, and the mattress arrives compressed into a box.

  • Softer Version Available

If you don’t think the medium-firm feel will fit your needs, you can make the Happsy softer by ordering the optional pillow top. If that’s not enough, there’s a Plush model available.

  • Eco-Conscious Materials

Happsy focuses on sustainable materials and manufacturing practices, using certified cotton, Dunlop latex, and wool. Even the springs are made from recycled metal. On top of that, the company doesn’t use any adhesives or glue to keep the layers together.

  • Adjustable Base Compatible

You can use any mattress foundation with the Happsy bed, as long as the slats are closely together. Also, this bed works on adjustable bases for a more customizable sleeping experience.

Construction: What’s Inside the Happsy?

The construction of the Happsy mattress starts with a soft cotton cover that is quilted to a quarter-inch of organic wool with cotton batting on the sides. The wool is an all-natural flame retardant, helping to wick away moisture and keeping the body fresh. What’s excellent is that the cover is removable and easy to spot-clean.

The Happsy mattress has two layers and is 10 inches tall. It has a wool filling on top and cotton filling on the bottom of the construction.

Happsy bed layers new
  • The comfort layer is made of 2 inches of Dunlop latex from Sri Lanka or India. This layer is naturally breathable and aerated to regulate temperature better. On top of that, it’s bouncy and responsive, which you can see in Michael’s video review.
  • The support layer has 8-inch pocketed coils that support the body for a healthy spine alignment. The coils help keep your spine straight while also allowing maximum airflow to help cool down the mattress. There are reinforced coils around the edges that help secure the perimeter when you sleep or sit on the side of the bed.

The additional pillow top has an extra 2 inches for those who want more pressure relief and a softer surface. This is a good option if you prefer firm support with a bit more sinkage towards the top.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Happsy arrives compressed in a box, so it should be relatively easy to move from your front door to the bedroom. While it’s not as cumbersome as beds delivered full-size, the box can still be heavy depending on the size you choose. For this reason, it helps to have someone assist you with this.

When you remove it from the packaging, it unrolls and starts decompressing. In most cases, it should come to its full size in about 30 minutes or longer if it’s a colder room.

We didn’t notice any smell, which is likely because the materials are organic and eco-friendly. However, if you do keep it in the box for a longer time, you may notice some odor due to the plastic packaging.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – This product has a GREENGUARD Gold certification that reflects the product’s ability to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards.
  • Certified Natural Materials – Cotton is GOTS-certified, which means it meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic. The latex is certified by GOLS.

  • Shipping – Happsy ships for free within the continental United States. There’s an additional fee for shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada.
  • Trial – This bed comes with a trial of 120 nights, which we think is enough for most people to decide if they like it.
  • Warranty – The Happsy mattress comes with a 20-year warranty.
  • Return Policy – Happsy donates or recycles returned mattresses, depending on where you live. Either way, you can get a full refund if you don’t like the bed and want to return it within the trial.

Our Verdict

We think this bed is an excellent option if you’re after an organic mattress at an affordable price. Its versatile firmness should fit many sleepers, and there’s the optional pillow top for those who want to modify it a bit.

We wouldn’t recommend this bed to plus-size stomach sleepers, who would likely prefer something more substantial to keep their hips from dipping. Additionally, the motion isolation is not the best, so if you’re a light sleeper with a restless partner, you might prefer a memory foam option instead.

Overall, the Happsy earned a 4.1 out of 5.
