When Casper launched their original mattress in 2014, it seemed to sweep the Internet. People loved this innovative all-foam mattress that was cool to the touch and zoned to support the back.

Others, of course, don’t do as well with an all-foam mattress. They’re not as bouncy and just don’t have the same feel as one with coils. Casper responded by creating their Casper Hybrid mattress, which includes both coils and foam layers.

Who I’d Recommend the Casper Original For

• People who want more bounce – Some couples prefer a bed with a bit of bounce during intimacy. The layer of innerspring coils in this hybrid makes it bouncier than the all-foam original.
• Combination sleepers – If you switch positions throughout the night, the buoyancy of this mattress should help you do so comfortably, and you shouldn’t feel ‘stuck’ in this mattress.

• Great for hot sleepers – The top layer of both mattresses is made from Casper’s proprietary AirScape™ foam. This foam is perforated to boost airflow and keep you cool all night long.
• Zoned support – The middle layer of both of these are memory foam beds with three ergonomic zones designed to be softer beneath the shoulders and firmer beneath the stomach, hips, and lower back. This means better spinal alignment throughout the night.

Comparing the Original vs the Hybrid: Top Differences

• All foam vs. hybrid – The Casper Original is an all-foam bed and therefore, feels more like a traditional memory foam mattress. It will be slow, slightly sinking, and will have no bounce. The Hybrid, however, has an added layer of coils (rather than a foam base), so it will feel bouncier and slightly less contouring.

Firmness

Even though there is only a small difference in firmness between the two, they still feel different, especially considering one contains coils and foam, and the other features an all-foam structure.

Support

Both of these mattresses feel supportive, especially for those who need extra lifting in the lumbar area. With the layer of zoned memory foam designed to specifically support the hips, lower back, and stomach, both beds should keep your spine properly aligned.

That said, the hybrid has the added layer of innerspring coils, which creates more of a “pushback” feeling rather than a “sinking in” feeling. This makes the Hybrid even more supportive than the Original.

Feel

On paper, these mattresses are very similar – they have a similar firmness and are highly supportive. However, if you lie on one and then the other, you’ll feel the difference. The Original feels like you’re slowly sinking into layers of contouring memory foam, but because of the quality materials and density of the foam, you won’t sink in too far.

Conversely, the Casper Hybrid feels bouncier and more responsive. It will be contouring on top, but you won’t sink in in the same way.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

As mentioned, the Casper Original will have more sinkage and less bounce because of its all-foam construction, which is ideal for those with joint pain or who need extra pressure relief, such as lightweight people and side sleepers. Additionally, the lack of bounce is ideal for sleepers sharing a bed who don’t want to be bothered by their partner’s movements.

The Casper Hybrid will have more buoyancy since it has a layer of coils, which naturally foster a more quick-responding feel and pushback support. This makes it a better mattress for combination sleepers, sleepers carrying more weight, and people with limited mobility.

Comparing Motion Transfer

Motion transfer describes the amount of motion you’ll be able to feel on one part of the bed when somebody is moving on the other. This is an important factor to consider for those who share a bed, especially for sensitive sleepers.

Since the Casper Original only contains foam, it has less motion transfer than the Hybrid, which has bouncy coils. That said, the Casper Hybrid still does a good job in this category, especially compared to some even bouncier hybrid mattresses that have latex in them.

Between these two Casper beds, however, the Original takes first place for isolating motion.

Comparing Cooling

Both of these mattresses include a top layer of Casper’s proprietary AirScape™ foam. This foam is dotted with tiny holes, allowing for better airflow. The difference, though, is that in the Original mattress, this layer lies on top of two more foam layers, and in the Hybrid, this layer lies on top of a support foam, followed by a unit of innerspring coils.

The coils provide extra airflow throughout the Hybrid mattress, making it one of the best mattresses for hot sleepers. So if cooling is a top concern for you, the Casper Hybrid is going to rate better in this category.

Casper Original Construction

The Casper Original is a bed-in-a-box product, which means it will arrive at your doorstep in a box. You’ll need to unpack it and allow it to decompress, which will take about 48 hours.

Once it has decompressed, the mattress will be 11 inches tall. The cover is made from durable polyester, and beneath this are several layers of foam.

• The first foam unit is the softest and bounciest layer. It is made from AirScape™ foam and keeps the surface of the mattress from overheating.
• The middle layer is made from memory foam. It is 2 inches thick and includes Zoned Support™, providing extra lifting around the hips, lower back, and stomach and softness at the shoulders and knees.
• The base layer is made from a dense foam that acts as the foundation for the entire mattress and creates more durability.

Casper Hybrid Construction

Like the Original, the Casper Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress. After you’ve unboxed the mattress and it has fully decompressed (which should take about 48 hours), the bed will measure 11 inches in height.

The cover is made from a polyester blend, and beneath the cover are two layers of foam and an innerspring base.

• The first layer is made from AirScape™ foam that is perforated to increase airflow, helping you stay cool. It’s also a softer and more contouring foam.
• The middle layer is made from Zoned Support™ memory foam. Like the Original model, this layer is designed to help optimize spinal alignment with softer support beneath the shoulders and knees and firmer support beneath the hips, waist, and lower back.
• The base of this bed is a layer of pocketed coils. These provide a bounciness that the Original won’t have, as well as added support and airflow. The coils are surrounded by a foam border for edge support.

• Shipping – All Casper mattresses come with free shipping and returns throughout most of the United States and Canada. There is an additional cost to ship to Hawaii, Alaska, and Northern Canada.
