If you’re looking for an affordable new mattress but unsure if you’ll sleep better on a hybrid or a memory foam model, let us introduce you to the Allswell hybrid and the all-foam Nectar.

Both brands are relatively new on the bed-in-a-box scene, with Nectar emerging in 2016, and Walmart-owned Allswell entering the chat in 2018. They both aim to provide affordable, direct-to-consumer mattresses without compromising on quality, which is something we can get on board with.

So, will it be the buoyancy and budget price of the Allswell that wins you over or the lifetime warranty and deep hug of the Nectar’s memory foam?

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

Firmness is important when choosing a bed, and we rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with one being soft as a cloud and 10 being incredibly firm. The Allswell is 7 out of 10, making it slightly firm, while the Nectar is 6.5, making it the industry standard for medium-firm.

Side sleepers and lightweight sleepers might prefer the softer Nectar, while stomach sleepers could love the extra support offered by the Allswell, which should help to keep their hips lifted.

Support

The Allswell offers great support thanks to its layer of 8-inch coils, which balance out the cushioning offered by the foam comfort layer above. We think it could benefit a lot of back and stomach sleepers.

The Nectar’s support comes from the bottom two layers, which are denser than the top comfort layer. This should feel supportive enough for most back and side sleepers, though heavier people over 230 pounds may require a firmer bed.

Feel

Both beds arrive compressed in a box. Once unboxed, the Allswell could take up to 48 hours to fully expand, while the Nectar may take up to 72.

Lie down on the Allswell and you should feel your body sinking pleasantly into the top comfort layer while also feeling lifted by the buoyant innerspring unit.

The all-foam Nectar may feel a little too firm at first, but don’t worry – this is often the case with memory foam, which tends to soften over time.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

If you’re looking for bounce, the Allswell wins in this category, offering fantastic buoyancy thanks to the responsive coil unit and dynamic foam. This allows you to sleep more on top of the mattress, rather than be swallowed by it, which can often happen with traditional memory foam.

What the Nectar lacks in bounce, it makes up for in body contouring and pressure relief, which could make it more suitable as a bed for side sleepers. Those with limited mobility may find it harder to move around and get on and off the mattress, so they may prefer the Allswell.

Comparing Motion Transfer

Motion isolation is imperative for people who sleep with a restless partner or those who share their bed with a pet that might jump on and off or reposition a lot during the night. What you’re looking for is minimal motion transfer, which means any movement remains isolated to that side of the mattress. Both beds offer excellent motion transfer.

The Allswel’s motion isolation comes from its individually-pocketed coils, which help to absorb movement. All-foam models tend to be great at minimizing motion transfer, and the Nectar does just that.

Comparing Cooling

Both mattresses offer cooling technology to help you sleep more comfortably. Foam layers tend to trap heat, but the Allswell has graphite and copper gel infused into the comfort foam, which aids absorption and dissipation of excess body heat. The coil unit’s individually-wrapped springs promote airflow and breathability, further cooling the mattress.

The Nectar also has gel-infused memory foam to help regulate body temperature. The foam support layer also allows some airflow, and the mattress comes with a heat-wicking top cover.

If you tend to overheat overnight, we’d recommend the Allswell over the Nectar, as beds with innerspring units are naturally cooler than all-foam models.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

Allswell Construction

The Allswell is a 10-inch hybrid model that combines memory foam and an innerspring unit to offer comfort and support. It starts with a polyester and polyethylene quilted top cover that’s woven with the company’s signature logo.

• The comfort layer features 2 inches of memory foam that’s quilted into the top cover. This foam is infused with graphite (charcoal) and copper gel to absorb heat and move it away from the body, helping to keep the mattress cool. This layer provides cushioning and pressure relief.
• The coil unit works as the bed’s support layer, engineered with 8-inch individually-wrapped coils that offer airflow and breathability, offering further cooling capabilities. This layer also provides support for your body, preventing you from disappearing into the mattress. As the coils are individually-pocketed, they offer good motion isolation as well as stability for the rest of the mattress. Thicker coils along the perimeter offer good edge support.

Nectar Construction

The 12-inch all-foam Nectar has a breathable, circular knit top cover made with a blend of polyethylene, polyester and nylon. The cover has heat-absorbing fibers, to help keep the mattress – and you – feeling cool.

• The comfort layer is made of 2 inches of memory foam, which is infused with gel to help dissipate body heat. This enables it to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam. This layer offers body contouring and pressure relief.
• The support layer also works as the transition layer, featuring 4 inches of soft conventional foam that’s designed to have an element of bounce. This layer eases you down into the firm base layer, while also providing support to foster healthy spinal alignment.
• The base layer is a 7-inch unit of conventional foam that gives structure and stability to the rest of the mattress, making it more durable.

Comparing Company Policies & Price

• Warranty  – The Allswell offers a 10-year limited warranty, while the Nectar has a Forever warranty.
• Shipping – Allswell offers free shipping to the contiguous United States, with the exception of California. White glove delivery is available for an extra 149 dollars (except for California, where old mattress removal is free, by law). A 50-dollar shipping fee applies to Alaska and Hawaii. Shipping is free to the contiguous U.S. with the Nectar, though there may be additional shipping charges to Alaska or Hawaii. White glove delivery is offered for 199 dollars.
• Trial Period – You get 100 nights to try out the Allswell and 365 nights with the Nectar.
• Returns – Free returns and full refunds (minus any delivery charges) are offered with both mattresses, if returned within the trial period. There’s a return fee for Alaska or Hawaii with the Nectar.
• Price – The Nectar is more expensive than the Allswell, which is rare as hybrid are typically higher in price.
