Who We Recommend The Nest Raven For:
- Indecisive shoppers – The Raven is a flippable mattress, so it’s an excellent choice for shoppers who can’t decide between medium and firm feel. The flippable design allows you to go back and forth between two firmness options without paying for two different mattresses.
- Back sleepers – Back sleepers typically need a firmer mattress that offers enough support for the lower back to prevent pressure and pain in this area. This bed has a layer of individually-wrapped coils that hold the body in alignment, while memory foam ensures no pressure builds up.
- Heavier people – People who weigh 200 pounds and more should like how the Raven mattress feels, especially if they use the firmer side that offers higher support levels and not as much sinkage.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Nest Raven For:
- Lightweight side sleepers – This flippable mattress may be too firm for side sleepers weighing under 130 pounds. Lightweight side sleepers often need a softer bed because they don’t weigh enough to activate the upper layers of a firmer mattress.
- Co-sleepers – Co-sleepers and couples looking for maximum motion isolation may want to consider another Nest model, as this bed can be too bouncy and responsive for some. Although the bed has a memory foam layer above the coils, this may not be enough to isolate motion so well for couples with different sleeping habits.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6/10 (Medium Firm), 7/10 (Slightly Firm)
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
This mattress has two firmness levels, so it’s a great option for those who can’t decide. Mattress firmness is an important factor to think about when purchasing a new bed, so having two options in a single mattress can help a lot. We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
The medium side feels like 6 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, so we’d say it feels medium-plush to medium-firm, depending on the sleeper’s weight and preferred sleeping position. The other side is firmer, which feels more like a 7 out of 10 on our scale.
How Does It Feel?
The construction has a quilted pillow top on both sides, so you should feel a bit of contouring regardless of the firmness level you go for. Since this is a hybrid bed with a coil unit, you’ll notice it has some bounce and responsiveness, so it’s unlikely you will feel stuck, especially if you sleep on the firmer side. In addition, there is gel in the memory foam comfort layer, so you can feel some cooling when using the medium firmness.
What We Like About the Nest Raven
- The quilted pillow top – Both sides have a quilted pillow top made from poly foam, giving this mattress enough plushness and contouring for optimal pressure relief on either side.
- Flippable design – The Nest Raven has a flippable design, allowing you to switch between medium and firm feel depending on how your preferences change.
- Industry-leading trial and warranty – This Nest mattress includes a lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial for customers to test how they like the mattress.
Our Nest Raven Complaints
- Our Nest Raven Complaints – Although it has a softer side, it should still feel medium plush to medium-firm for most people. For those under 130 pounds, the bed may feel even firmer and possibly uncomfortable for side and back sleeping.
- It may be too bouncy – The Nest Raven mattress is a hybrid with coils that give a bouncy feel for easy repositioning. However, those looking for maximum motion isolation may find this bed too bouncy.
Testing the Nest Raven Mattress: How it Performed
We tested both sides of the Nest Raven mattress to evaluate which side is best for certain sleeping positions. In addition, we also tested for edge support, bounce, pressure relief, and other preference-based features. Our motion isolation tests, involving a water bottle on one side of the bed, showed that Raven might not be the best for co-sleepers as its bounce carried motion from one side to the other, causing the bottle to wobble too much.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Nest Bedding, the Raven mattress can handle up to 1,000 pounds, which means 500 pounds on each side. However, the company representatives claim the bed may not be the best for significantly heavy people looking for active support and lift.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers may find this bed too firm, even with the softer side up. This is because the mattress doesn’t allow too much sinkage, and people under 130 pounds are unlikely to activate the comfort layer for enough pressure relief.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers are likely to find more relief, but they’re advised to use medium firmness as it should allow more pressure relief for the shoulders and hips.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier sleepers should try the firmer side for a more balanced level of pressure relief and support.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers may want a softer mattress that allows a bit more sinkage and contouring around the lower back. Raven has a quilted top, but its overall firmness may be too much for people weighing under 130 pounds.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Back sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds may find both sides comfortable enough, depending on their preference and exact weight. These people should experience more sinkage in the quilted top while the coils keep the body aligned.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers should like the firmer side as the foams on this side are denser, and less like to allow as much sinkage. This, combined with the coils, should do a good job of keeping the spine in a neutral position.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should experience this bed as slightly firmer, which in turn, allows for a balance of relief and support to keep the hips aligned without creating any pressure buildup.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers may want to stick to the firmer side as it has a better chance of keeping the body aligned without letting the hips sink into the comfort layer too much.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds are likely to sink too deeply into the comfort layers, even with the firmer side up. For this reason, most should do better with a firmer mattress.
Pressure Relief & Pain
When it comes to pressure relief, it’s always important to look at comfort layers and how much sinkage they allow. The Nest Raven mattress has a quilted pillow top and a memory foam comfort layer on both sides, so it should be good for pressure relief. However, this is only for people weighing over 130 pounds. Anyone lighter may find either side too firm to relieve pressure.
Average-weight and some heavy people should experience a nice contour around the curves, helping relieve pressure in sensitive areas.
Back Pain – This mattress is a treat for people with back pain as it’s on the firmer side. The firm side offers excellent support for those who struggle with back pain, combining dense memory foam with bouncy coils. The other side feels medium plush to medium firm, so it should also offer good support to keep the body in a healthy sleeping posture.
Hip Pain – People with hip pain have different opinions, depending on their preferred sleeping positions. Those who sleep on the side may prefer a softer bed if they usually struggle with hip pain. On the other hand, those who sleep on their backs should like the Raven mattress as it prevents the hips from sinking too deeply. Explore beds for hip pain here.
Shoulder Pain – Sleepers with shoulder pain often think similarly to those with shoulder pain. They may require different levels of sinkage and support, depending on how they like to sleep. Side sleepers who prefer firmer beds should like the medium plush side as it gives a bit more contouring to relieve pain and pressure in the shoulder area. For more information, check out our list of best mattresses shoulder pain.
Support
The Nest Raven mattress is on the firmer side, so you can expect an excellent support level. The firmer side is better at supporting the body as it doesn’t allow as much sinkage as the softer side.
The main support comes from the bed’s coil unit, featuring individually-wrapped coils. These are springy but offer solid support for average-weight and even some heavier people. Additionally, the high-density foams add a bit to the overall support since they don’t allow too much sinkage. All of this makes it a perfect option for back sleepers and those weighing 130 to 230 pounds.
Motion Transfer
The Nest Raven mattress features a combo of foams and springs, all of which make it a responsive bed. Although bounce is great for many people, it comes at the cost of motion isolation. For this reason, Raven isn’t the best for those who share their bed with a restless sleeper, kids, or pets.
The coils in this bed make it bouncy, responsive, and easy to reposition on. However, this bounce also carries movement from one side to the other, so you’re likely to feel your partner tossing and turning.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
Hot sleepers probably know the struggle of trying to find a cool spot on the mattress. Although Raven isn’t a cooling mattress, it has three features that help make it more suitable for those who sleep hot. First, it has gel-infused memory foam that helps draw body heat away from you. Second, it has coils that allow continuous airflow. These two things help cool the construction so that it doesn’t overheat. Third, the cover is made from a phase-change cooling fabric that makes it cool to the touch.
Performance for Couples
Couples have different needs, so it’s important to think about what you’d prefer in a mattress. Some may prefer a bouncy bed, while others like to focus on motion isolation. The Nest Raven mattress is on the bouncy side, so it should appeal to sexually-active couples looking for some pushback support.
However, partners with different sleeping habits may feel it lacks a bit in the motion-isolating department. As we mentioned, this bed may allow motion transfer which could be a drawback for some people.
Preference-based Features
Flippable Design
The Raven mattress is a dual-side bed with two different firmness levels. One side is medium plush to medium firm, while the other is firm, allowing sleepers to switch through as their sleeping habits change.
Pillow Top
This hybrid mattress has a pillow top on both sides, so it doesn’t matter the firmness you use. The pillow top is made from resilient polyfoam, so it won’t compress under your weight.
Excellent Edge Support
Raven has a reinforced perimeter, giving enough edge support to keep the edges from collapsing. Although you may feel the edges compressing a bit, you’re unlikely to feel like rolling off the bed if you sit or sleep in this area.
Made-to-Order in the USA
Construction: What’s Inside the Nest Raven?
The Nest Raven mattress is 10 inches tall, featuring three layers and a quilted cover on both sides. The cover is made from phase-change cooling fabric, so it’s cool to the touch and comfortable for those who sleep hot. This is a flippable mattress, so you can use either side. The layers are stacked so that the order is the same regardless of the side you use, but we’ll explain how it goes with the medium side up.
- The cover is quilted to an inch of poly foam, adding some softness and plushness you can feel on the first touch.
- The comfort layer has an inch of memory foam infused with gel for additional cooling. This layer is responsive, so you’ll notice the bed returning to its shape once you get up. Nonetheless, it allows enough contouring to relieve pressure in the hips, shoulders, and knees.
- The support layer is in the middle, featuring coils that go from edge to edge. This layer is 6 inches tall, acting as the main support unit with individually wrapped coils and reinforced perimeter for maximum edge support.
- The base is an inch of high-density firm foam. This layer acts as a comfort layer for the firm side of the mattress, so it comes first if you flip the bed. Underneath, you’ll see the same quilted cover but with a diamond quilted pattern.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Nest ships this mattress in a box, so it’s not as bulky and cumbersome to move from your doorstep to the bedroom. However, the box can be heavy, so consider having an extra pair of hands to help you move it around. If not, you can choose white glove delivery to have professionals deliver and install your bed for you.
Unboxing it is easy, but you should first place the box on your foundation of choice. Once you do, remove the packaging and let the mattress unroll and decompress. Keep in mind that unrolling doesn’t take much, but it may take several hours for the mattress to decompress.
Off-gassing should be minimal since this mattress is made to order. Additionally, foams used in this mattress are aired out in the factory, which helps reduce any chance of off-gassing.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

- White Glove Delivery – Professional installation is available through a Nest Bedding partner. However, you’re required to place your order over the phone.
- Trial – Nest Bedding allows you to keep Raven for 365 nights, which should give you enough time to see if the mattress fits your needs.

- Return Policy – You can return the mattress at any point during the trial period. You’ll be required to donate the bed, and you’ll receive a refund only once the company has a confirmation of your donation.

Overall Summary
Raven is a high-quality bed with two firmness options, giving you the option to choose without purchasing a new bed each time. The combination of foam and coils give this bed bounce, support, and pressure relief to fit a range of sleepers.
Side Sleepers
4/5
Side sleepers should enjoy the memory foam comfort layer that allows a bit of contouring for pressure relief. Although both sides have a firmer feel, the bed should feel good for average-weight and heavy people. Lightweight side sleepers may prefer a softer bed like the Nest Quail.
Back Sleepers
4/5
Back sleepers can use both sides, depending on their body weight and the level of pressure relief they want. The softer side should allow more sinkage to relieve pressure and pain in the lower back without letting the hips sink too much. The firmer side is more suitable for heavier back sleepers as it’s more supportive.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
Stomach sleepers should stick to the firmer side as it offers more support to keep the hips aligned. This should feel good for lightweight stomach sleepers, while those on the heavier side may prefer a firmer bed, especially if they weigh over 230 pounds.
Combination Sleepers
5/5
Raven is an excellent mattress for combo sleepers because it has a bouncy and responsive feel. This makes it easy to switch positions and move around the bed. On top of that, combo sleepers can flip the mattress depending on the sleeping position they prefer at the time.
Couples
4/5
Couples looking for a bouncy and versatile bed are likely to be happy with the Nest Raven mattress. The coils in this bed give it enough pushback support most couples look for. However, it lacks a bit when it comes to motion isolation, which can be a problem for partners with different sleeping habits.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
Although this bed can handle up to 1,000 pounds, people weighing over 230 pounds are likely to experience it as too soft. Even the firmer side may not be enough to keep the hips aligned, especially for heavy sleepers who like sleeping on their stomach.
Lightweight Sleepers
3/5
People weighing under 130 pounds may find this bed too firm. As a result, many people may experience pressure buildup, especially if they like sleeping on their side. People under 130 pounds likely don’t weigh enough to activate the comfort layer and experience contouring and pressure relief.
Average Weight Sleepers
5/5
Average-weight people should find both sides comfortable, depending on their preferred sleeping position. Those who like sleeping on the side should find enough relief sleeping on the medium-firm side, whereas back and stomach sleepers may choose the firmer side that offers more support.
Overall Value
4/5
Nest ships this flippable hybrid in a box, packing a lot of value with its 365-night trial and lifetime warranty. The two sides have different firmness and feel, making this bed a good choice for a range of sleepers, including hot sleepers, people with mobility issues, and those with back pain.
Our Verdict
Do you think Raven is the right mattress for you? Although it leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to motion isolation, it has an excellent bounce to aid in repositioning and late-night activities. In addition, Raven has a sturdy support layer that ensures proper spine alignment. Plus, it’s flippable, so it’s like having two mattresses in one.
All of these features make this mattress work best for back and stomach sleepers, hot sleepers, and heavyweight folks. However, those looking for maximum motion isolation may be disappointed by the bouncy nature of this bed, while petite sleepers may be left wanting more as far as pressure relief goes.
