Can you have a memory bed without using viscoelastic materials?
WinkBed is a well-loved online mattress brand that manufactures three mattresses: their flagship WinkBed mattress, a luxury hybrid, an eco-conscious, all-latex model called the EcoCloud, and the focus of this review, the GravityLux, a non-visco memory foam offering. The GravityLux is one of the first memory foam mattresses that is made without viscoelastic materials.
Our in-depth WinkBed GravityLux review examines the features that make this bed unique. Note: This product comes in three firmness options: GravityLux Soft, GravityLux Medium, and GravityLux Firm, but we’ll focus on the Medium model in this review.

Who We Recommend the WinkBed GravityLux For:
- People who want options – With a choice between soft, medium, and firm, most sleepers should find a bed that works for them. Instead of a “one size fits all” approach, the variety of firmness options allows sleepers to customize their mattress based on their sleeping style and preference.
- Memory foam fans – This bed has all the attributes that memory foam fans love, plus a little extra. In addition to its huggable, cradling feel, the GravityLux is designed for support and includes several cooling features.
- Sleepers who want optimized alignment – Five targeted areas in the GravityLux’s Progression Foam™ layer offer varying degrees of support to different parts of the body. This construction should alleviate pain in sore joints and sensitive areas.
Who We Don’t Recommend the WinkBed GravityLux For:
- Folks who need top-notch edge support – This mattress features average edge support for an all-foam product, but people who order the GravityLux in ‘Firm’ might find better success, as the denser material should reinforce the edges a bit more.
- Heavier folks – The medium firmness of this mattress may not prove supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers. This is especially so if they prefer to sleep on their stomachs. These sleepers may push too far down into the mattress and find that their hips sag into the bed, which may cause aches and pains.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6/10 (Medium)
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
Determining how firm or soft you prefer your mattress is one of the most important considerations when shopping for a new one. We rate mattresses on a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being plush soft.
We rated the WinkBed GravityLux a 6 out of 10, which classifies it as a medium-firm mattress. This middle-of-the-road firmness level should help keep you from sagging too far into the bed, while also allowing enough sinkage for pressure relief.
How Does It Feel?
When you first lie down on the Gravity Lux, you should instantly feel the cooling Tencel® cover, which is made from sustainably-sourced Eucalyptus tree material. Then, as you sink further into the mattress, you should feel a layer of gel-infused foam that is tufted to the cover. The overall feel of the GravityLux was summed up by one of our testers as “pillowy” and “fluffy”.
What We Like About the GravityLux
- Hypoallergenic materials – This mattress is made from hypoallergenic materials, making it great for those who experience allergies.
- Five targeted support areas – The GravityLux was designed to provide more support in the hips and lumbar regions, whereas the areas around the shoulders and legs are softer and offer more cushioning.
- Exceptional motion isolation – If you sleep with a restless partner, the almost non-existent amount of motion transfer in this mattress should be a big plus.
Our GravityLux Complaints
- Lacks edge support – Those who sleep on the edge of the bed may feel unsupported due to the lackluster edge reinforcement of this mattress. This is typical for all-foam beds, so sleepers looking for solid edge support should consider a hybrid mattress made with coils.
- Slow responsiveness – Although it isn’t overly difficult to reposition on the GravityLux, this mattress is slower to respond to movements, which may make it difficult for those with mobility issues.
- Heavyweight sleepers may need more support – Weighted at a combined 900 pounds, the GravityLux can handle a good amount of weight, but some plus-sized folks may feel as if their hips sink too far down. These sleepers are better off with a firmer, more supportive mattress.
Testing the GravityLux Mattress: How it Performed
Our team put the GravityLux mattress through a variety of tests. We tested for how much motion was transferred, how responsive the mattress was to movement, and how well it regulated temperature. Additionally, we noted its performance for a variety of sleep position preferences, as well as lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight body types and couples.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to WinkBeds, all of their models can handle up to 900 pounds collectively, or 450 pounds per side. However, while this is an impressive amount of weight, heavyweight sleepers may still find themselves feeling stuck in this mattress.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Most lightweight side sleepers should feel comfortable on this mattress, especially due to its all-foam, cradling design. However, some petite folks may find that this mattress too firm to sleep comfortably through the night.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight sleepers should do well on this mattress. Its soft enough to cushion their pressure points, but firm enough to maintain spine alignment.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers may sink too deeply into the top comfort layers, which may cause them to bottom out to the lower support layer. While some may enjoy pressure relief, others may find the medium-firmness of this bed doesn’t provide adequate support.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should fare well on the GravityLux. Its soft enough to contour to their lower back and shoulders without compromising support.
- Average Weight Sleepers – This mattress should keep back sleepers of average weight content and comfortable. The all-foam construction and targeted lumbar support promote healthy spine alignment.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – The majority of heavyweight back sleepers should find that the GravityLux mattress meets their needs. However, for those who weigh over 300 pounds may prefer a more supportive mattress built specifically for their weight group.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should find that that mattress provides a stable and supportive platform for their preferred sleeping position. The foams contour to the chest and shoulders, while the medium firmness level offers enough support to keep the hips raised and spine aligned.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Most average-weight folks who sleep on their stomachs should find that this mattress keeps their hips from sagging, which should help alleviate any back pain.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – People who sleep on their stomachs and weigh over 230 pounds, may find that this mattress allows their hips to sag too far in the bed, thus throwing their spine out of alignment.
Pressure Relief & Pain
Sleepers looking for pressure relief in key areas like the shoulders and hips should be very impressed with the conforming properties of this bed. The AirCell™ materials are designed to offer targeted pressure point relief by offering a balance of contouring and pushback support in specific zones. While most all-foam mattresses perform well when it comes to relieving pressure, many leave you sinking deep into the bed where you may feel stuck. Thankfully, this shouldn’t be a problem with the GravityLux, although some body types may experience this mattress differently.
Back Pain – The all-foam construction combined with the bed’s medium-firmness level should provide excellent lumbar support and relief.
Hip Pain – Most sleepers should find that the GravityLux contours to their hips, relieving excess pressure. However, some sleepers – particularly heavyweight folks – may find that they sink too deep into this mattress, which can exacerbate hip pain.
Shoulder Pain – Side sleepers are more susceptible to shoulder pain since this area bears the brunt of their body weight, but the GravityLux should offer ample pressure relief in this position. The foams cradle your body, which helps relieve shoulder pain.
Support
The amount of support found in a mattress is important for the health of your spine and your overall comfortability. Luckily, the GravityLux’s AirCell™foams were designed to mold to your body for dynamic support. The Zoned Progression Foam™ layer also has five unique support zones with varying levels of pressure that should work to keep your spine properly aligned. These foams also work together to absorb motion and reduce bounce. This does sacrifice some responsiveness, but overall, the pressure-relieving benefits should be worth it. While the materials may not assist moving around, most combination sleepers shouldn’t struggle to change position, though folks who have mobility issues may need to keep this in mind.
Motion Transfer
The GravityLux performed exceptionally when it came to preventing motion from transferring from one side of the mattress to the other. This mattress features AirCell™ foam that was built using patented shock-absorbing air capsules. In other words, these capsules were designed to minimize motion transfer. We tested the motion transfer by placing a glass of water on one side of the bed and creating motion on the other side. The water was virtually unmoved even as the tests grew more vigorous. Therefore, if you are someone who is often kept awake by the tossing and turning of your sleep partner, the GravityLux should provide excellent motion isolation.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
Traditional visco-elastic foams are known for retaining warmth, which could be an issue for sleepers who struggle with overheating at night. The GravityLux features cooling gel in the cover and its own patented open-cell foam that is designed to allow air to flow freely throughout. However, while the GravityLux should sleep cooler than other all-foam mattresses, it’s worth noting that it likely still sleeps warmer than a hybrid bed made with coils. Therefore, extra hot sleepers may want to invest in a cooling mattress.
Performance for Couples
The GravityLux doesn’t provide much bounce, therefore, sexually active couples may find it harder to reposition in this bed. However, the GravityLux performs well in other key areas like motion isolation and support, so those with restless sleep partners should be able to sleep undisturbed through the night.

Construction: What’s Inside the GravityLux?
The GravityLux mattress stands 11 inches tall and contains premium foam materials. The foams used in the construction of this bed are free from viscoelastic materials which helps set this bed apart from many of its competitors. An eco-friendly Tencel® cover starts the mattress off. It absorbs moisture and heat, and wicks them away to the outside edges of the bed’s surface. In addition, two-inches of gel-infused foam is tufted to the Tencel cover. This soft foam material promotes further temperature regulation. Additionally, the comforting plushness of the top layer helps provide pressure relief.
- The first layer beneath the cover is AirCell™ Memory Foam. This material was designed to relieve pressure while fostering support. The material should provide great motion isolation with its shock-absorbing air capsules, is made to be breathable so you can sleep cooler throughout the night.
- The second layer contains Zoned Progression Foam™ which is made to provide targeted support to sensitive areas to help sleepers rest in optimal alignment. It sports firmer support in the hips and is softer beneath the legs and shoulders.
- The third layer is the brand’s proprietary Atlas Core Foam™. This is a strong material that the brand claims should provide a lifetime of durability. It supports your body weight and works as the overall foundation of the product.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The GravityLux comes rolled and compressed in a box. Although set-up is relatively easy once it arrives, you may want to have a friend handy to help you move it into place. Once you have the mattress in its desired room, simply cut up the top of the box and pull your mattress out. Once you remove the plastic covering, your mattress should start to inflate. While this process shouldn’t take long, give your mattress 24-72 hours to be fully inflated.
As your bed starts to take shape, you may notice a chemical smell. While unpleasant, the smell is harmless, and it should dissipate in around 24 hours. Placing your mattress in a well-ventilated area can help eliminate the smell faster.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® Certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 Certified – The Tencel used in this mattress was tested by a third party for harmful substances and found safe for children.

Overall Summary
The WinkBed GravityLux mattress introduces a new age of memory foam by offering a pressure-relieving experience without the drawbacks of traditional viscoelastic materials.
Side Sleepers
5/5
Side sleepers often benefit from mattresses with a plush comfort layer. The materials used in this product help to relieve pressure in areas like the hips and shoulders, while the firmer foams beneath are geared towards keeping the body properly supported. Softness is a key feature side sleepers love, so these folks may benefit from the GravityLux Soft model.
Back Sleepers
5/5
Back sleepers can take advantage of the zoned support this product offers. It should help to keep the body aligned while the soft foams on top work to relieve pressure. Back sleepers who like a firmer bed might want to look into the GravityLux Firm.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
Stomach sleepers might find that they sink too quickly through the comfort materials. Most of these folks will probably be better suited for the GravityLux Firm. This model would be better at keeping their hips elevated and aligned with their shoulders.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
Stomach sleepers might find that they sink too quickly through the comfort materials. Most of these folks will probably be better suited for the GravityLux Firm. This model would be better at keeping their hips elevated and aligned with their shoulders.
Couples
4/5
Couples who sleep in different positions should both feel comfortable in this medium-firm bed. It contains a good balance of pressure relief and support to cater to both partner’s needs. The GravityLux was designed to stop motion from ever reaching your partner, so both of you can sleep happily in bed.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
People with more significant weight considerations may be better suited towards the WinkBed Plus, as the GravityLux only supports weights of up to 450 lbs for single sleepers and 900 for co-sleepers.
Lightweight Sleepers
4/5
Many lighter individuals prefer all-foam mattresses that allow their bodies to sink into the layers and experience the full potential of the bed. While this medium-firm option should work well for lighter individuals who sleep on their stomach or back, light side sleepers may want to consider the soft option.
Average Weight Sleepers
5/5
With a medium firmness level combined with gentle cradling, the GravityLux should be an excellent bed for average-weight sleepers. Although this mattress should serve all of the preferred sleep positions for folks in the middle of the scale, those who like to sleep on their back are likely to be huge fans of this mattress.
Overall Value
4/5
The GravityLux mattress by WinkBed is a durable, environmentally-friendly bed. The firmness options make it a great choice for those unsure of what they prefer. Plus, the high-quality construction and lifetime warranty make this mattress a solid value for those who love an all-foam mattress.
Our Verdict
The WinkBed GravityLux is the brand’s first all-foam model, and it does not disappoint. It offers the close contouring and pressure relief that memory lovers are looking for while offering several key updates to the classic material to improve cooling and longevity. The foams should do an excellent job contouring to your shape, which makes it a good choice for side and back sleepers. Lightweight to average-weight folks should also fare well on this mattress, but heavyweight sleepers may want a firmer, more supportive bed with coils.
