The Leesa Studio is a back sleeper’s dream, thanks to its firmness and overall feel. It’s a bed-in-a-box mattress with three foam layers that provide excellent support and motion isolation.
This might be your ideal bed if you’re after a mattress that gently contours your curves while ensuring your spine is always aligned. We tested the Leesa Studio to see how well it performs in various categories, focusing on support, pressure relief, bounce, motion isolation, and more.

Who We Recommend The Leesa Studio For:
- Back sleepers – We found this bed to be on the firmer side and that it worked well for back sleeping. Also, the memory foam in this mattress allows enough contouring to relieve lower back pain in this position.
- Stomach sleepers – The Leesa Studio should work well for stomach sleepers as its firmer construction keeps the hips from dipping. This way, the lower back shouldn’t hyperextend either.
- Budget shoppers – The Leesa Studio is more affordable than most similar mattresses, which is great for those looking for a bed under $1,000.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Leesa Studio For:
- Sleepers who want some bounce – This all-foam bed has very little bounce, so it might take some getting used to if you’re after a responsive mattress. If you prefer more bounce, our innerspring mattress list can provide you with more selections.
- Most side sleepers – After testing the Leesa Studio, we found it might not be the best choice for side sleepers. This is because the firmer feel might not give enough cushioning for the shoulders and hips.
- Those who want a softer mattress – This bed is firm and won’t sink as deeply as a softer mattress would.
Customer Reviews of the Leesa Studio Mattress
On Leesa’s website, the Studio mattress scores 4.2 out of 5, with most customers praising this mattress as the best value for money. Many customers recommend this bed for its comfort and support level, but others said it was too firm for their preference.
Testing the Leesa Studio Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
When testing the Leesa Studio, we looked at specific performance features important to consumers, such as overall support, pressure relief, cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. This also helped give us an idea of how we think this mattress could do for couples.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic, and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
We rate mattress firmness between 1 and 10, where 1 is the softest possible feel, and 10 is as firm as it gets. When first lying on the Leesa Studio mattress, it was clearly on the firmer side. This bed feels like a 7.5 out of 10, which is a feel we’d describe as slightly firm.
How Does It Feel?
When we first unboxed the Studio, we noticed the well-made polyester cover. It feels a bit cool to the touch, but the sensation fades fairly quickly after you lie in bed.
When you lie down, you’ll likely sink a bit because the top layer is made from memory foam, but the firmer poly foam underneath helps keep you lifted.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Leesa, the Studio mattress can handle up to 300 pounds on each side, which is 600 pounds total.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We think lightweight side sleepers might find this bed too firm around the shoulders since they likely don’t weigh enough to activate the comfort layers.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should sink deeper and thus, get more pressure relief. However, those closer to 130 pounds might still like a softer bed to cradle the hips and shoulders.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight sleepers around 230 pounds should like how this bed feels in the shoulder area. However, we think anyone heavier than that might experience pressure buildup.
Explore more beds for side sleepers.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We think lightweight sleepers should like how this bed cradles the lower back, although those with back pain might prefer a slightly softer comfort layer that contours even more.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers are likely to benefit from the Leesa Studio mattress, as its firm feel keeps the spine straight in this position.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers, especially those well over 230 pounds, might want a bed with coils that provide more support around the lower back.
Browse: Mattress for Back Sleepers
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We think lightweight stomach sleepers should like how the Leesa Studio feels around the hips. In our opinion, the bed is firm enough to keep the hips elevated and the spine aligned.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers who are closer to 130 pounds should be nicely supported by the foams in this mattress. However, those closer to 230 pounds might need a firmer bed with more support around the hips.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We think heavy stomach sleepers are better off with a hybrid or at least a firmer all-foam bed because the Studio would let their hips sink too deeply, which can result in back pain.
Explore the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Pressure Relief
3.5/5
Pressure relief is a major concern for many shoppers, which is why we always thoroughly test how a mattress relieves pressure. Although all preferred sleep positions can be affected by the amount of pressure relief provided by a mattress, side sleepers are typically the most prone to buildup because of the concentration of weight around the hips and shoulders.
The Leesa Studio mattress is on the firmer side, so don’t expect a lot of deep cradling. Nonetheless, the bed allows surface-level sinkage that gently contours your curves. Due to its firmness, though, we think the Leesa Studio is not the best option for side sleepers.
Is the Leesa Studio Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
The Leesa Studio mattress is a firm all-foam bed that excels in the support compartment. If your pain is caused by too much sinkage in your old mattress, this Leesa model should help mitigate that from happening. However, the Studio feels firm, so be careful if you have any chronic pain. In some cases, we think it could worsen pain because of how firm it feels around the pressure points.
Back Pain
This bed should work well at alleviating back pain in certain sleepers. We think the people who will benefit the most are lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. Stomach sleepers with back pain should also find it comfortable as the Studio doesn’t allow the hips to fall through the mattress, keeping the spine in a neutral alignment.
Hip Pain
Side sleepers with hip pain might want to think twice about the Leesa Studio because this firm bed might feel even firmer around the hips. This is especially the case for side sleepers who, in our opinion, are likely to experience exacerbated hip pain on this bed. Explore beds for hip pain here.
Shoulder Pain
If you sleep with shoulder pain, we suggest you try sleeping on the back and stomach because the Leesa Studio mattress is too firm for side sleeping with shoulder pain. If you are a side sleeper, explore our picks for the best mattresses for shoulder pain.
Support
4/5
Pressure relief might not be the best on the Leesa Studio mattress, but the support it provides is good.
Lightweight and average-weight sleepers should like how the firm foam lightly contours without allowing too much sinkage. These sleepers should experience proper spine alignment in most positions.
However, its overall support level still depends on your weight. We noticed that Leesa Studio is not supportive enough for heavy sleepers, particularly those who sleep on their stomach, which is why it received a 4 out of 5 here.
Motion Isolation
5/5
Motion isolation refers to how much you can feel someone else moving on the other side of the bed. The better the motion isolation, the less likely you’ll feel someone else moving around. This might not be important for single sleepers, but it’s usually helpful for couples and co-sleepers.
When we tested the Studio mattress, we noticed very little motion transfer across the mattress, which means it has great motion isolation. This bed is made is made with memory foam, a material known to isolate movement very well.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
3.5/5
While the memory foam in the Studio is fantastic for motion isolation, it’s not so helpful at temperature regulation because it can trap heat. The company included a cool-to-the-touch cover and open-cell foams, but this doesn’t do much for cooling. So, if you’re a particularly hot sleeper, we’d suggest the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid.
Bounce
2/5
If you’re after a bouncy bed, the Leesa Studio is not it. This mattress is made from foam, which is less responsive than latex or coils. The slow-responding foam is excellent for motion isolation, but it does little when it comes to bouncing back to its original shape after weight has been applied. Therefore, if bounce is a top priority, you might want to consider an innerspring or hybrid mattress.
Edge Support
3.5/5
We tested the Studio’s edge support by sitting and lying near the edge of the bed to see how much it collapses when you put pressure on this area. The answer is that its edge support is average. Foam mattresses don’t usually have the best edge support, but because the Studio is firmer, the edges hold up fairly well compared to other foam beds within its price range.
Performance for Couples
3.5/5
Whether couples would enjoy the Leesa Studio mattress depends on what they find important. Those after a bouncy bed should look elsewhere, but couples looking for excellent motion isolation should be pleased with this bed.
On the other hand, it’s not the best for cooling, so if you or your significant other are hot sleepers, you might be even hotter sleeping on this memory foam mattress. Similarly, the Studio doesn’t rate the best for edge support, so those who like to spread out may not like this bed.

Construction: What’s Inside the Leesa Studio?
The Studio mattress has three foam layers and a soft polyester cover. The cover is moisture-wicking, which might also help hot sleepers who tend to sweat at night. The mattress is 10 inches tall.
- The comfort layer is the softest of the layers, providing most of the pressure relief. It’s made from memory foam and has a slow response, allowing only a surface-level sinkage to contour the hips, shoulders, and knees.
- The transition layer is made from polyurethane foam. This layer is firmer, which you can only feel if you press into the bed. You’re unlikely to feel this layer just lying on the bed.
- The base layer is the thickest part of this bed, measuring 7 inches tall. It’s made from high-density poly foam, the firmest of the three layers, and acts as a foundation for the entire bed.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
It took two of us approximately 10 to 15 minutes to unbox the Studio.. Unboxing and handling the bed by yourself might take longer and be slightly more difficult because the bed is heavy. Keep in mind that the Queen weighs around 68 pounds, which is why we think you’re better off with some help.
Once unwrapped, the Studio takes a while to decompress. You might also notice off-gassing odors. These are harmless but can be quite strong, so we suggest you leave the bed in a well-ventilated room for at least 48 hours for the odors to dissipate.

Our Verdict
The Studio by Leesa offers good value for money. This foam bed is made from memory foam and poly foam and features both CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD Gold certifications.
We think this bed is a suitable match for lightweight and average-weight back and stomach sleepers, along with couples who want maximum motion isolation. That said, we weren’t as impressed with its edge support, cooling, and bounce, which brought the overall score down. That said, if these other categories aren’t as important to your specific needs, then we think the Studio is worth considering.
This bed earned an overall score of 3.6 out of 5.
