Canadian brand Silk & Snow came on the bed-in-a-box scene in 2017, with the aim of making high-quality mattresses affordable and accessible for all. Their original Silk & Snow bed is a 10-inch all-foam model, featuring slow-moving memory foam that offers gentle sinkage and deep pressure relief. As well as this memory foam delight, the company sells two other mattresses – the Silk & Snow Hybrid and the Silk & Snow Organic, with the original Silk & Snow being their cheapest and most affordable offering.
To see if Silk & Snow’s flagship model is a quality mattress that will work for you, I reviewed it for important qualities like firmness, responsiveness, motion isolation, and cooling. Read along as I share my first-hand experience with this mattress.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
To help you make an informed choice, I test each mattress thoroughly in order to rate it for important features like edge support, motion isolation, pressure relief, cooling, and responsiveness. I also evaluate how I feel in various positions and often implement a seismograph app to test motion and infrared imagining to show you where pressure may build up in the body.

Who I Recommend The Silk & Snow For:
- Lightweight sleepers – I think lightweight sleepers under 130 pounds will like the Silk & Snow, as it offers a great balance of support and pressure relief for all sleeping positions.
- Side sleepers – Most side sleepers should appreciate the gentle contouring and deep pressure relief offered by this bed’s memory foam comfort layer. However, side sleepers who weigh over 300 pounds may prefer a firmer mattress to prevent excessive sinkage.
- Memory foam fans – The slow-moving memory foam on the Silk & Snow should appeal to those who love the deep sinkage and ‘in the bed’ feel of traditional memory foam.
Who I Don’t Recommend The Silk & Snow For:
- Lightweight side sleepers – I feel this mattress’ firmness will be too hard for lighter folks who sleep on their side. Their hips could experience a lot of pressure buildup in this position.
- People with mobility issues – This bed has very little edge support while sitting on it. I sank very far into it, and I fear that those with mobility issues may struggle to get up from this bed.
- Hot sleepers – There is a layer of gel foam that helps keep the temperature somewhat regulated, but those who need a true cooling mattress will want to look at cooling mattresses.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
Mattress firmness is one of the most important factors when buying a new bed, impacting how soft or hard a bed feels, and the best firmness level for you depends on your weight and sleeping position. We rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the most soft and 10 being the most firm.
I gave theSilk & Snow a 6.5 out of 10, which makes it a medium-firm mattress. Most beds that fall in this medium range offer more versatility to accommodate a broader range of people and sleep styles.
How Does It Feel?
The Silk & Snow mattress is delivered compressed in a box and may take up to 72 hours to reach full size once unpacked. However, you don’t have to wait that long to jump in – you can sleep on it straight away.
Press your hand into the mattress and you’ll feel the incredibly slow-moving memory foam, which has almost zero bounce. Lie down on the bed, and you’ll gently sink into the foam, feeling like you’re sleeping ‘in’ the bed, rather than ‘on top’ of it.
What I Like About the Silk & Snow
- Motion isolation – This all-foam mattress had very little motion transfer, which means you shouldn’t be disturbed by a partner tossing and turning or getting in and out of bed.
- Removable cover -The Silk & Snow’s cover zips off and can be machine-washed, which is super handy if you tend to be a bit accident-prone when drinking coffee or wine in bed.
- Great pressure relief – I felt very little pressure in all sleeping positions thanks to the gentle cushioning provided by this mattress’ memory foam layer. There is a chance that some lightweight sleepers may notice some pressure buildup, but overall, I think it will prevent pressure accumulation for most folks.
My Silk & Snow Complaints
- Lack of edge support – I found the edge support on this mattress to be lacking. Therefore, you’re likely to feel the sides of the mattress collapsing under your weight when sitting on the edge of the bed or sleeping close to the perimeter.
- No white glove delivery – White glove delivery is only offered to Toronto residents, which may be an issue for those who live alone and need additional help setting up their new bed.
- Insufficient cooling – The Silk & Snow has a layer of gel foam that helps with temperature regulation, but it is not cool to the touch. I don’t think that people who get hot through the night will find much relief with this mattress.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Silk & Snow is designed to support up to 300 pounds per individual, which equals 600 pounds total for couples. This weight limit could explain why the Silk & Snow mattress didn’t perform well for heavier individuals, which I’ll go into more detail about below.
Weight | Side SleepersIcon | Back SleepersIcon | Stomach SleepersIcon |
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ★★☆ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ★★★ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Although lightweight side sleepers will be well-supported, I feel that this bed may be too hard on their hips.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should receive ample spinal alignment, and many of the sleepers in this category will find great support. However, those who are dealing with hip, shoulder, or joint pain may want to avoid it.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Side sleepers weighing between 230 and 300 pounds should experience great cushioning and support. I was a big fan of the lumbar lift that this bed provides for these sleepers.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – This mattress is a good choice for lightweight back sleepers, who should experience great lumbar support.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Back sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds should get good support on this mattress. I also liked that I didn’t feel much sinkage around my backside and midsection.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – The Silk & Snow should provide good weight distribution and spinal alignment for back sleepers weighing over 230 pounds.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers tend to experience mattresses as firmer. This is why I think this model should work for lighter stomach sleepers, whose hips should remain elevated to avoid lower back pain.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – I felt very comfortable when testing this position because my hips were elevated and my spine was aligned.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – The Silk & Snow should be very supportive and comfortable for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Pressure Relief & Pain
4/5
The Silk and Snow performed well for pressure relief, delivering minimal pressure in all sleeping positions. This means the memory foam layer is doing a great job of cushioning sensitive joints for most sleepers.
When it comes to pressure relief, this mattress particularly suits side sleepers, who tend to require more pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. I would say the only exception here would be lightweight side sleepers since they may not get enough cushioning in that position. I was also a little shocked by how well the Silk & Snow prevented pressure around the hips of stomach sleepers.
Is the Silk & Snow Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
Overall, the Silk & Snow does a great job of preventing and alleviating pressure and pain. It supports the hips and spine, and this helps prevent the spine from being in an awkward or painful position. Further, the memory foam will provide pressure relief to alleviate discomfort.
Back Pain – For those with back pain, optimal spine support is key. I think that this mattress provides great spinal support and lumbar lift for the many types of back pain.
Hip Pain – Thanks to the plush memory foam on this mattress, most side sleepers with hip pain should experience very little pressure in this area. Additionally, the firmness of this mattress should keep stomach sleepers’ hips lifted, which can help prevent hip pain.
Shoulder Pain – We found that the Silk & Snow offered good pressure relief at the shoulders when side sleeping, which is great news for those with sensitive shoulders.
Support
5/5
You need good support from your mattress to help your spine stay in its correct – and healthy – alignment. This will help prevent any aches and pains or related health issues over time. The Silk & Snow’s support system comes from a transition layer of performance foam and a support layer of premium foam. I thought that this bed was supportive in all sleeping positions. Although I was initially concerned that it would not do a good job at lifting the spine, I found that it did an excellent job.
Motion Transfer
4/5
The Silk & Snow’s slow-moving memory foam offers fantastic motion isolation, which means that any movement a partner or pet makes should stay on their side of the bed, leaving you undisturbed and sleeping soundly. Although this is to be expected from an all-foam bed like the Silk & Snow, I was still very pleased.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
2/5
While all-foam beds excel at cushioning and pressure relief, they can also carry more heat. Silk & Snow has attempted to combat this by using a breathable cover, as well as open-cell, gel-infused memory foam in the comfort layer. The open-cell design helps air circulate throughout the foam, while the gel draws heat away from the body. However, I think that hot sleepers will do better with a dedicated cooling bed.
Bounce
5/5
I was impressed with how the Silk & Snow’s memory foam, a material not typically known for its responsiveness, bounced back as I moved around on the surface. I feel that this will make it a good bed for combination sleepers because they should be able to move about without feeling stuck in the mattress.
Edge Support
2/5
When I was lying on the edge of the bed, I didn’t feel particularly insecure in this position. However, when I sat on the side, I felt that I was sinking all the way to the bottom of the bed. Therefore, for those who have mobility issues or simply like to sit on the edge of the bed when getting dressed, this mattress is not going to be a good fit.
Performance for Couples
3/5
As mentioned, the Silk & Snow doesn’t have great edge support. Although it wasn’t too bad when I was lying on the edge of the bed, I did notice this more when I was sitting on the perimeter. I can see how this lack of edge support could affect couples who like to spread out and sleep closer to the perimeter. However, what it lacks in edge support, it makes up for in motion isolation. I found this mattress to have minimal motion transfer, which is great news for light sleepers who share their bed with restless partners. In this case, I would only recommend this mattress for couples who need good motion isolation and plan to get a bigger size so that edge support won’t be as big of an issue.

Preference-based Features
Removable Cover
Even if you use a mattress protector, you’ll still need to clean your mattress cover at some point. Some mattresses don’t feature removable covers, which means they can only be spot-cleaned, but the Silk & Snow’s cover is fully removable and machine-washable for easy convenience.
Hybrid Version Available
If you’re looking for the same affordability as the original Silk & Snow but want the responsiveness of coils and zoned lumbar support, then you should check out the Silk & Snow Hybrid. The good news is it doesn’t cost that much more than the original.
Construction: What’s Inside Silk & Snow?
The Silk & Snow is a 10-inch tall all-foam mattress, featuring an antimicrobial cover made from polyester and spandex, which helps to inhibit the growth of any nasty bacteria. The stretchy cover can be zipped off and fully removed for machine washing, which is great news for those who love a leisurely breakfast in bed and are worried about any spills or stains. Breathable fabric is used to help avoid overheating and excess sweating.
- Below the cover is the comfort layer, made from 2 inches of 4-pound luxury, high-density memory foam that’s designed to feel plush, offering great sinkage and pressure relief at the joints. This foam is infused with gel to help draw heat away from the body, keeping you cool. It’s also made with an open-cell design, allowing more airflow and breathability than traditional memory foam.
- The transition layer is constructed with 2 inches of 1.8-pound performance foam, offering support and motion isolation – perfect for those who share a bed and don’t want to feel disturbed by their partner or pet’s movements.
- The support layer is made up of 6 inches of 1.8-pound premium foam. This offers further support for the sleeper, as well as the rest of the bed, providing a durable foundation to keep everything in its place and hopefully keep you sleeping more easily for years to come.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Like many foam mattresses, the Silk & Snow had an unpleasant off-gassing odor once unboxed, which is the smell that occurs when chemical byproducts escape after being vacuum-packed. I recommend leaving the mattress in a ventilated room after unboxing it.

My Verdict
The Silk & Snow is a great pick for sleepers who love memory foam as they should feel comfortably cushioned and supported in all sleeping positions. This bed earned an overall score of 3.6 out of 5.
I recommend that lightweight side sleepers go with a softer bed as these will offer hug-like pressure relief. This is a high-quality bed at an affordable price point, made by a Canadian company that values local craftsmen and supply chain transparency. Therefore, I also think it’s a good choice for those who like to know exactly where their bed was made.
