Are you looking to upgrade your bed with a more luxurious mattress? If so, the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress may be the right choice, as it can make you feel like you’re sleeping in a 5-star hotel.
The Lux Estate is an upgrade of the company’s Estate mattress. The mattress seems to have enhanced features such as hand-tufting that improve its responsiveness, as well as an optional pillow top for more comfort and that luxurious feel.
We tested the Lux Estate mattress in Medium, along with a pillow top, and as our reviewer Sydney said, it feels like “sleeping on a cloud.” In the review below, we bring you all the details about this bed’s features, specifications, pros, and cons.

Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress Performance Ratings
Watch Our Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Video Review
Who We Recommend The Lux Estate For:
- Couples – The coils combined with hand-tufting make it a responsive bed, while the pillow top absorbs some of that motion so that you’re not easily disturbed by your partner’s tossing and turning.
- Combination sleepers – As Sydney pointed out, the Lux Estate mattress feels good in back and stomach sleeping positions. The construction provides plushness and support, so it should also work if you sometimes roll onto your side as well.
- Luxury shoppers – This bed has that great hotel quality to it, so you’re likely to feel like staying at a luxurious 5-star hotel. However, the price is right up there as well, with the Queen size being over 3,000 dollars.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Lux Estate For:
- Budget shoppers – If you’re after an affordable mattress, the Stearns & Forster Lux Estate is not it. This is a luxury mattress with premium materials, a tall profile, and hand tufting, all of which reflect its price. As mentioned, the Queen size is over 3,000 dollars, so it may not be within everyone’s budget.
- People who want an all-foam mattress – This mattress is a hybrid, meaning that it features coils in its construction. Although this isn’t a bad thing, it may put you off if you have your mind set on a memory foam mattress without an innerspring unit.
Testing the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress: How it Performed
We test mattresses in various sleeping positions to evaluate who they’d fit the best. By checking how it feels in different positions, we also get a better idea of its pressure-relieving properties and support level, as well as whether it helps keep the body aligned. We also test for qualities like motion isolation, cooling, bounce, and edge support.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6.5-7/10
This mattress is available in Soft, Medium, and Firm options, allowing you to choose based on what fits your sleeping needs the best. There’s also an option to order a bed without the pillow top, but then you can only go for the Medium model as the other two aren’t available.
We tested the Medium model with a pillow top, rating it between 6.5 and 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. The coils offer solid support, while the pillow top provides enough cushioning for pressure relief in the shoulder, hip, and lower back areas.
How Does It Feel?
The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress combines a range of features such as the Tempur-Indulge™ pillow top and Intellicoil™ HD coils. We feel the mattress offers excellent pressure relief as it allows just enough sinkage and contouring within the pillow top.
However, you’re unlikely to sink too deeply into the mattress as the coils keep your body aligned. The Tencel™ cover and silver air vents prevent the air and heat from staying trapped inside the bed, so it feels fresh and cooling.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Stearns & Foster’s official representatives, this bed has a weight capacity of 1,000 pounds. This makes it a good match for heavier couples and single individuals, as it can carry up to 500 pounds on each side.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should feel a nice combination of support and pressure relief thanks to the plush pillow top hugging the shoulders and hips. However, some may find it a bit firmer.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers may sink a bit deeper into the pillow top, but they should still get enough support from the coils.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers may find this bed too soft, bottoming out to the coils due to the softer nature of the pillow top.
Discover the Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Back sleepers weighing under 130 pounds should benefit from this bed’s combination of coils and pillow top. The mattress supports your body, ensuring it’s properly aligned without any part sinking too deeply into the construction.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should like how the mattress hugs the lower back, helping to ensure there’s no pain or pressure buildup, even if you spend the entire night in this position.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers may find their lower back and hips sinking too deeply since the mattress has a medium firmness that may not work for those over 230 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should feel nicely supported by the coils and the bed’s medium firmness.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers may sink a bit deeper into the pillow top, though most should still feel well-supported by the coils so that hips don’t fall out of alignment in this position.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers may prefer a firmer model because they’re likely to find the Medium Lux Estate too soft to support the hips.

Pressure Relief & Pain
5/5
Our team found that this mattress excels in pressure relief. It features a pillow top made from TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam. The foam has a cloud-like feel, allowing just enough sinkage to hug your hips, knees, and shoulders in various positions, providing optimal pressure relief.
Although different sleepers would feel different sinkage levels, depending on their body weight and preferred sleeping position, we think the pillow top is a nice touch and should feel comfortable to most people.
Back Pain – People with back pain should feel nicely supported by the IntelliCoil® springs sitting under the pillow top. The coils give this bed a sturdy feel, offering plenty of support to keep the body aligned in various sleeping positions. Additionally, the contouring the bed offers should help relieve tension in the lower back.

Hip Pain – Sleepers with hip pain should find plenty of relief in the Lux Estate’s pillow top. This addition to the standard version of the mattress makes a huge difference when it comes to pressure relief in sensitive areas such as shoulders and hips.

Shoulder Pain – Shoulder pain is another common issue people struggle with, mostly when sleeping on their side. While the Lux Estate offers excellent support in all sleeping positions, the bed also gives enough cushioning to relieve the tension in the shoulders while keeping the body aligned. Support
5/5
The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress offers great support thanks to the sturdy coil system. The IntelliCoil® coils are uniquely designed with a Precision Edge™ border that enhances edge support.
When you lie on the mattress, you should feel your body sinking into the pillow top. However, the sturdy coils underneath, paired with the bed’s overall medium feel, won’t allow you to bottom out. Instead, you should feel well-supported by its 16-inch construction that helps keep your body aligned and in a healthy position regardless of whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach.

Motion Isolation
5/5
Motion transfer, or motion isolation as we sometimes refer to it, is a big factor to consider when buying a mattress, especially if you’re co-sleeping. This bed, although it has a plush pillow top, has excellent motion-isolating capabilities. We tested this by placing a water bottle on one side of the bed and throwing a weight on the other. The bottle didn’t move, which leads us to believe most movement would be absorbed by the mattress, making it a good option for partners with different sleeping habits.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
The Lux Estate mattress has good cooling properties thanks to its coils and air vents, keeping the construction fresh. These two features allow continuous airflow to prevent heat from staying trapped inside the bed. On top of that, the Tencel™ cover it comes with promotes cooling, as it has temperature-regulating properties that help keep hot sleepers cool.

Bounce
5/5
We found sufficient bounce with the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Medium. So, if this is a quality you want in your next mattress, you should consider this bed. Typically, we recommend bouncier mattresses to people with limited mobility, combination sleepers, and sexually-active partners as the buoyant materials can aid repositioning.
Edge Support
5/5
As mentioned above, this Stearns & Foster bed features a Precision Edge™ border to deliver advanced edge support. With sturdier edges, we think this mattress could be great for those who like to spread out or often sit on the edge of the bed. If this sounds like you, then we think you’ll like this product.
Performance for Couples
5/5
When it comes to performance for couples, this is where the Lux Estate mattress really shines. The bed combines bounce and motion isolation, both of which are crucial for couples.
Partners with different sleeping habits should appreciate this bed’s motion isolation capabilities. Since it absorbs most movement, you’re unlikely to feel your partner tossing, turning, and getting in and out of bed. On the other hand, it offers just enough bounce to assist with intimacy without making you feel trapped inside the construction.

Construction: What’s Inside the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate?
The Lux Estate is available with or without the pillow top. If you want the one without a pillow top, keep in mind it only comes in Medium and is 14.5 inches tall. With a pillow top, it’s available in Medium, Soft, and Firm, all of which are 16 inches tall. We’ll focus on the Medium Lux Estate with a pillow top, as this is what our video team tested in person.
The construction starts with a stretch-knit Tencel™ cover, perfect for hot sleepers. This cooling cover is designed to wick away moisture and keep the bed’s surface cool throughout the night.
- The pillow top comes right under the cover, and it almost looks like a separate part of the bed. This cushioning layer is made from TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam to provide additional comfort and support.
- The comfort layer is made from three TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam layers meant to provide a combination of pressure relief and a weightless feel without taking away from the support and durability.
- The support layer features Intellicoil® coils that add support and bounciness, ensuring the upper layers perform at their best and your body is properly aligned. The edge is reinforced with Precision Edge™ coils for additional support along the edges.
- The base is another layer of memory foam supporting the coils and all the layers above.

Our Verdict
The separate pillow top gives the Lux Estate an extra touch when it comes to that expensive look but also delivers pressure relief and responsiveness. Although it may not work for heavier people, we think this mattress should be a good fit for average-weight and lightweight sleepers.
The Lux Estate is a pricey bed, especially if you’re after a larger size. However, we think the company offers good value for money, providing a perfect combination of motion isolation and bounce as well as edge support and cooling. Plus, let’s not forget the trial, warranty, and complimentary white glove delivery. Overall, this bed earned an impressive score of 4.8 out of 5.
