Foam has been a favorite material of many mattress companies for years. As such, the idea of a no-foam bed constructed with no synthetic materials isn’t something you come across often, especially at an affordable price point.
Previously known as Joybed, the Joybed LX mattress claims that “natural sleep is better sleep.” However, we think there’s more to buying a mattress than just looking at its materials. In this Joybed LX mattress review, we will focus on everything from the materials to the feel and performance in various sleep positions and preference-based categories.

Who We Recommend The Joybed LX For:
- Eco-friendly shoppers – Joybed prides themselves in their all-natural craftsmanship, meaning their beds contain no synthetic materials, except the coil wrap that makes less than .01 percent of the mattress by weight. The cover is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, and the layers are designed to be hypoallergenic.
- People after good edge support – A double column of coils surrounds the perimeter, giving this product above-average edge support. We think this is ideal for couples or those who share a bed with pets and/or kids and need to use every inch of the surface.
- Warm sleepers – Because the Joybed LX contains no foam, the coils and comfort materials are more breathable than some newer foam mattresses that tend to trap heat.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Joybed LX For:
- Light sleepers – We think this bed feels more like an innerspring in terms of motion isolation. Although the bounce allows for ease of movement and repositioning, light sleepers sharing this bed with a restless partner may feel them move or get up at night.
- Petite side sleepers – Some petite sleepers, particularly those who prefer sleeping on their side, may find this bed too firm. The Joybed LX is slightly firm, which may not feel the best around the hips and shoulders for those under 130 pounds.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
We score mattresses on a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The Joybed LX is on the firmer side, so we placed it at a 7 out of 10.
We think its feel is best described as slightly firm, although this very much depends on your exact weight. Some people may experience it as slightly softer or firmer. Overall, we think people who prefer a slightly firmer than average surface will enjoy sleeping on this bed.
How Does It Feel?
The Joybed is covered in organic materials, which are soft to the touch and breathable. It may feel different than the covers you are used to because there is no added polyester; polyester is stretchy but tends to let moisture sit on the surface.
We think the Joybed LX should work well for most warm sleepers. Coiled mattresses have an easier time assuring a cool sleep space because air flows more freely through them than a foam mattress. Add that to the fact that the bed is made with only natural materials, and you should not have any problems waking up hot.
What We Like About the Joybed LX
- All-natural materials – This bed contains cotton, wool, and plant fibers instead of foam. As such, it’s hypoallergenic, safe, and eco-friendly, making it a perfect option for eco-conscious shoppers. Plus, the feel of these materials is quite unique and nothing like sleeping on traditional innerspring or foam models.
- It’s fully recyclable – Because it’s made of natural materials, the Joybed LX is fully recyclable. Even the coils can be recycled and used for something else once you throw away the mattress.
- There’s no off-gassing – We noticed this bed produced no off-gassing odors when we first removed it from packaging. This is likely due to the fact that it doesn’t have any synthetic materials.
Our Joybed LX Complaints
- Not a traditional feel – Although some people may like the non-traditional feel (we do!), some may find it difficult to get used to. It’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly makes this mattress different, but the fact that there’s no foam means there’s no slow-sinking cradling feel many people love.
- There’s motion transfer – As soon as you hear there’s bounce, you can assume there’s also some motion transfer. Although the coils are deep inside the mattress, we think the lack of foam makes it difficult for the bed to isolate motion.
- Four sizes only – The Joybed LX comes in four sizes only, so you can choose between Twin, Twin XL, Queen, and Cali-King. If you want a King or a Full, these are not available at this time.
Testing the Joybed LX Mattress: How It Performed
When we test beds, we focus on how they feel in various sleeping positions. We also assess how they perform when it comes to bounce, pressure relief, support, motion isolation, temperature regulation, and more.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
We couldn’t find any official information on how much weight the Joybed LX can handle. Regardless of weight limits, though, mattresses will not always work well for every body type and sleep position.
Weight | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight Sleepers (-130 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★★ | ★★★ |
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs) | ★★☆ | ★★☆ | ★★☆ |
Heavyweight Sleepers (+230 lbs) | ★☆☆ | ★★☆ | ☆☆☆ |
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We think some lightweight side sleepers may find this bed too firm. However, it depends on your preference. The Joybed LX has good pressure-relieving capabilities, but if you’re under 130 pounds, you may not activate its comfort layers.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Most average-weight side sleepers should experience a nice balance of pressure relief and support. The layer of breathable cotton provides enough cushioning, and average-weight sleepers should sink just enough to feel the relief without sinking in the wrong places.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers should experience even more sinkage, and although the bed is on the firmer side, it may not be firm enough. Most of your weight is concentrated across a narrow surface, so you may experience uncomfortable sinking of the hips or shoulders if you’re over 300 pounds.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – The Joybed LX is a charm for back sleepers. We think even those under 130 pounds should like its soft cover and contouring cotton layer that cushions the lower back.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight sleepers may sink a bit deeper depending on their exact weight. However, we think most should feel nicely supported by this slightly firm mattress.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers are likely to sink deeper into the cotton layer, but the overall firmer feel should do a good job of keeping them aligned. However, we think sleepers over 300 pounds should go for a firmer bed.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – The Joybed LX is an excellent match for lightweight stomach sleepers because they don’t weigh enough to bottom out to the coils.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers closer to 130 pounds should feel supported in the hips and shoulders. However, those closer to 230 pounds are likely to prefer a firmer bed.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We don’t think this bed is a good match for heavy stomach sleepers. Their hips would sink too deeply into the mattress, which can cause spine misalignment.
Pressure Relief
4/5
This bed has a layer of organic cotton where we would usually see some type of foam or latex. However, don’t let this deter you from trying the Joybed LX. Although it’s nothing like foam beds, the Joybed LX does a good job of relieving pressure.
This bed has two cotton layers split by a layer of heat-wicking wool. The combination allows plenty of cushioning, so you should feel a gentle cradle around pressure points. However, lighter people may not experience as much pressure relief because they experience the bed as even firmer.
Is the Joybed LX Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
Innerspring and hybrid mattresses are typically good for pain relief as they provide solid support in various sleeping positions. We think the Joybed’s slightly firm feel helps relieve pain by supporting the body for proper alignment. In addition, it shouldn’t create any new pain or pressure as long as you make sure its firmness fits your sleeping position and body type.
Back Pain
The coils in this mattress do a good job of keeping the body aligned so that there’s minimal chance of back pain. Even back sleepers should feel nicely supported because the bed is on the firmer side. The comfort layers cushion the pressure points, while the coils ensure there’s no excess sinkage that would throw the spine out of alignment.
Hip Pain
People with hip pain need to be careful when it comes to matching their sleeping position with the right mattress firmness and feel. If you’re a side sleeper, a mattress that’s too firm can make your hip pain even worse. We think the Joybed LX offers enough cradling around the hips, but those under 130 pounds may want an even softer bed.
Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can also be tricky to sleep with if you’re a side sleeper. In our opinion, many side sleepers with shoulder pain will likely prefer a softer bed, even if they carry more weight to sink further into the bed.
Support
4/5
The Joybed LX has coils, and it’s on the firmer side, which is a recipe for good support. We tested it out in a few sleeping positions, feeling equally supported in each of them. However, firmness and feel are subjective, and depending on how much you weigh, you may feel different support levels in various positions.
Nonetheless, we think the Joybed LX excels in support as it has a sturdy layer of coils. They support the upper layers, preventing them from sagging, and dissipate your weight to support your body equally well.
Support
4/5
Spring mattresses are notorious for their bounciness, and with that comes inevitable motion transfer. The Medium has high motion transfer due to its thin cotton layers and coiled base, meaning that you may feel your partner getting in and out of bed and repositioning throughout the night. Those who are particularly light sleepers might be better served on the Luxury Plush model, as its added comfort layers create a larger barrier between the sleeper and the coils, and may absorbing more motion.
Motion Transfer
3/5
Spring mattresses are notorious for their bounciness, and with that comes inevitable motion transfer. The Joybed LX has some motion transfer due to its coil base and the fact that it doesn’t have any foam to help absorb motion. For this reason, you may feel your partner getting in and out of bed and repositioning throughout the night.
While we don’t think it performs the worst when it comes to motion isolation, light sleepers may be disturbed by their significant other.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
The Joybed LX isn’t a cooling mattress, so don’t expect any special cooling covers or advanced temperature-regulating technologies. However, we didn’t feel particularly hot on this bed.
The mattress is made from natural materials, all of which are breathable and naturally good at regulating temperature. The plant fiber cover and cotton layers allow plenty of airflow, but the real star of the show is the wool. Wool has excellent temperature-regulating properties, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Plus, this bed has coils, which help enhance airflow so that the construction doesn’t overheat.
Bounce
4/5
High quality spring mattresses tend to respond quickly, and this bed is no exception. You should find repositioning easy, and the bounce is also helpful for sexually active partners. The bed should make you feel like you are in a gentle cradle, lying more on top of the surface rather than sinking in as you might on foam.
Edge Support
5/5
Joybed’s double-coiled perimeter provides excellent edge support, especially compared to its foam bed-in-a-box competitors. This is important for those who want to utilize the entire sleeping surface, like couples, people who like to get dressed sitting on the edge of the mattress, or those who play video games sitting on the end of the bed. We felt just as supported on the edge of the mattress as in the center because of its innerspring design.
Performance for Couples
3/5
Whether this bed is good for couples and co-sleepers is up to you to decide based on what you want from a mattress. The Joybed LX has excellent edge support that we think is important for couples. It also has a bounce that sexually active couples should prefer.
However, it doesn’t have the best motion isolation, so if your partner is a restless sleeper, they may wake you up due to the movement transferring from one side to the other.
Preference-Based Features
Plant-Based Glue
We already mentioned that this bed is made from organic, natural materials. However, what really surprised us was that not even the glue in the Joybed LX was synthetic. Instead, it’s plant-based and used only in the coil unit.
100% Organic Cotton Cover
The Joybed LX comes with an organic cotton cover that encases the mattress. The cover is soft to the touch and breathable as it’s made from organic fabric without any addition of polyester. Plus, it’s GOTS-certified.
Bed-in-a-Box Shipping
This mattress ships in a box, so it’s easier to move around. Box shipping is increasingly popular lately because mattresses can be quite bulky and cumbersome. When rolled in a box, mattresses of all sizes are easier to move from the front door to the bedroom.
Adjustable Base Compatible
This bed works on any flat surface, including adjustable bases.

Construction: What’s Inside the Joybed LX?
Each component of this 10-inch bed is constructed from ethically sourced materials and is recyclable. In fact, the top layers and cover are actually biodegradable.
Although the cover is the only certifiably organic part of the mattress, Joybed assures that the layers inside the mattress are still high quality and sustainable, keeping costs down while still marketing a natural product. This is a great alternative to a latex mattress, avoiding possible latex allergies.
- The first layer of this mattress is made from plant fibers woven to provide a fire barrier. These are potato plants, so they’re completely natural.
- The comfort layer is made from cotton sourced from America. This layer is loosely woven to create a breathable and comfortable feel. On top of that, it’s hypoallergenic.
- Next comes a layer of wool that enhances breathability and helps with temperature regulation, keeping you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. Wool is also a natural fire barrier.
- Moving further down, you’ll find a layer of cotton that adds support and acts as a transition layer to the coils underneath. This layer is firmer than the cotton closer to the surface.
- The support layer has individually wrapped coils that support your body and allow proper weight distribution.
- The outer edge of the bed has robust coils to add support around the perimeter.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Joybed is a no-foam mattress made with layers of cotton and coils held together by a GOTS Certified Organic brushed cotton cover infused with a plant fiber fire barrier. It’s compressed and delivered to your door in a box and can be placed on any flat surface, including adjustable bases.
Unpacking takes a few minutes, but we suggest you have a friend or family member help you because the box can be heavy depending on the size you choose.
We didn’t notice any off-gassing, likely because the bed is made from natural materials. Since there are no odors, you can use it immediately after it decompresses.

Our Verdict
Made with sustainable and recyclable materials, the Joybed LX is perfect for those who want their products to come from ethically responsible sources while still sleeping comfortably.
The breathable top layers and coiled foundation should keep you cool all night, and the slight bounce makes repositioning a breeze. Exclusive side sleepers under 130 pounds may struggle a bit with pressure buildup, while back and stomach sleepers should love the firmer feel of the Joybed LX.
Shoppers seeking a more natural sleeping experience will love the affordable price that mattresses with comparable features will be difficult to match.
Overall, the Joybed LX earned a 4.2 out of 5.
