If you thought air beds were flimsy mattresses you slept on while camping, think again – Sleep Number has created a high-tech range of smart air beds that combine air chambers and foam designed to give you the best sleep of your life.
Sleep Number has three series of beds – Classic, Performance, and Innovation. The Innovation series includes three beds – the i8, i10, and iLE. In this review, we’ll focus on their i10 bed. The i10 features adjustable firmness levels, sleep tracking, and Responsive Air® technology, which allows the bed to change firmness during the night, based on your movements.

Who We Recommend The Sleep Number 360® i10 For:
- Couples – The Sleep Number 360® i10 suits a wide range of sleepers, which is great news for couples. Plus, it has great motion isolation, cooling technology, and dual air chambers that allow you to customize firmness on each side of the bed.
- Hot sleepers – This bed has a breathable cover and ThermaLux® foam that’s infused with ceramic to help draw heat away from the body and keep you cool, unlike traditional memory foam, which tends to sleep hot.
- Technology lovers – This smart bed features Responsive Air™ technology that detects your movements during the night, adjusting the firmness accordingly. The bed is also connected to Sleep Number’s SleepIQ® app, which offers insights into your sleep quality.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Sleep Number 360® i10 For:
- Couples who sleep close together – If you and your partner have wildly different firmness preferences, a gap could appear between the two air chambers, causing you to roll into it if you like to cuddle in the middle. If this applies to you, you might enjoy a different mattress for couples.
- Shoppers who aren’t interested in a smart bed – If adjustable firmness and sleep tracking data don’t interest you, then it’s not worth splashing the cash on this high-tech bed. Instead, we recommend looking into something more traditional, like memory foam mattresses.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
We rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the most firm. It’s hard to give a definitive number to this bed, as the firmness is adjustable, with as many as 20 firmness settings (or Sleep Numbers, as the brand calls them). You can manually change your Sleep Number or allow the Responsive Air® technology to adjust your Sleep Number while you sleep based on your movements. The bed’s customizable firmness means it should accommodate a variety of sleepers.
How Does It Feel?
While the Sleep Number 360® i10 has 20 firmness options, it still feels incredibly plush, thanks to its 7 inches of comfort foam. Sleep Number bed names include numbers to indicate their softness – higher numbers mean the bed has a larger amount of cushioning. So, for example, the i10 has more cushioning than the Sleep Number 360® i8. However, most sleepers should still feel supported on the i10’s foam.
What We Like About the Sleep Number 360® i10
- What We Like About the Sleep Number 360® i10 – With its 7 inches of contouring foam, the i10 offers fabulous pressure relief for most sleepers in all sleeping positions. This is great news for those who experience joint pain.
- SleepIQ® sleep tracking – This bed uses biometrics like heart rate, breathing rate, and movement to assess how good your sleep quality is, via its SleepIQ® app. The app will also give you tips on how to improve your sleep and can be connected to other health apps like Fitbit and Apple Health.
- Versatility – With its adjustable firmness and DualAir technology that allows couples to customize their half of the bed, the Sleep Number 360® i10 is incredibly versatile, suiting a wide range of sleepers.
Our Sleep Number 360® i10 Complaints
- Price – The Sleep Number 360® i10 is the most expensive of Sleep Number’s beds (along with the iLE), at 5,399 dollars for a Queen, and the warranty doesn’t fully cover defects after the first year, so maintaining the bed could also prove costly.
- Limited sizing – The Sleep Number 360® i10 is only available in a Queen size and larger, which excludes shoppers who want a Twin, Twin XL, or Full.
- It can take a while to figure out your sleep number – While an adjustable firmness is a handy feature, it can take some time to figure out what works for you. Sleep Number suggests finding a setting that feels good and sticking with it for a few days before adjusting to see how you feel.
Testing the Sleep Number 360® i10 Mattress: How it Performed
Our reviews are based on in-person tests in which we analyze different mattress features like motion isolation, cooling, edge support, and bounce. Additionally, we look at how supportive and pressure-relieving the mattress is in different sleep positions, including on the side, back, and stomach.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
Sleep Number beds with dual air chambers – like the Sleep Number 360® i10 – can carry a maximum weight of 400 pounds per side. However, the bed may not be supportive enough for some heavier sleepers.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should experience great cushioning and support on the i10, sinking far enough into the comfort layer to experience good pressure relief and contouring.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers could really love this bed, experiencing soothing pressure relief at the shoulders and hips while also feeling adequately supported.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Although heavyweight side sleepers may be able to find a sleep number that offers sufficient contouring and support, we think some will be at risk of sinking too far, causing poor spine health.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should be able to find a setting that provides great lumbar support and cushioning – a must for back sleepers.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should sink deep enough into the contouring foam to get good pressure relief and still feel supported by the air chamber.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Many heavyweight sleepers should be able to get sufficient lumbar support and cushioning but some may find themselves bottoming out, which isn’t great for spine health.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers could enjoy the contouring foam that should cushion the chest and abdomen while also keeping their hips lifted.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight front sleepers will likely feel comfortable on this bed by selecting a higher sleep number that will keep the hips lifted.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We think many heavyweight stomach sleepers will be able to find a sleep number that works for them but some could find their hips sinking too far into the comfort layers, causing lower back pain.
Pressure Relief & Pain
The Sleep Number 360® i10 mattress features up to 7 inches of plush contouring foam, making it one of the softest Sleep Number beds. The foam is designed to push back against your body when it warms up, relieving pressure without retaining heat. There are lots of online reviews from people saying that the bed soothed their joint pain and helped them sleep through the night.
Back Pain – The plush cushioning and contouring support on the i10 could offer great pressure relief and lumbar lifting, helping to soothe any back pain.
Hip Pain – People with hip pain should experience a good level of pressure relief on this mattress, thanks to the thick layers of contouring foam and support provided by the air chambers.
Shoulder Pain – Side sleepers with shoulder pain should find this bed a treat, sinking deeply into the comfort foam.
Support
Although the i10 bed has a thick 7-inch comfort layer, the mix of Ergonomex™ and ThermaLux™ foams provide more support than you might expect, as this foam is denser than the foam found in some of Sleep Number’s other models, such as the iLE. This should provide adequate support for a wider range of sleepers, including stomach sleepers, who require a lot more lift in the hip area.
Unfortunately, edge support isn’t great on this model, which could affect couples who like to spread out or those with limited mobility.
Motion Transfer
Light sleepers who share with a restless partner should look for a bed with good motion isolation. This means that any movement made by someone on another side of the bed should remain there, leaving you undisturbed. The Sleep Number 360® i10 has great motion isolation, thanks to its dual air chambers and the thick layer of comfort foam.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
Mattresses with cooling technology are ideal purchases for those who sleep hot or live in a warm climate. The Sleep Number 360® i10 features a temperature-balancing layer of ThermaLux™ ceramic-infused foam, which is designed to be four times more conductive than gel-infused foam. This layer doesn’t trap heat like traditional memory foam, and it has a breathable poly-blend cover attached, which further helps dissipate body heat.
Performance for Couples
This mattress has good motion isolation and features cooling technology, which could benefit those who tend to overheat when sharing a bed. DualAir technology allows you to customize the firmness on each side of the bed, which could be a huge plus point for couples with differing firmness preferences.
However, it doesn’t offer any bounce, which could be a dealbreaker for those seeking a responsive mattress for intimacy. It also doesn’t have great edge support, as the thick foam layer tends to collapse when sleeping too close to the edge.

Preference-based Features
Multiple Firmness Options
This bed has an option of 20 firmness levels, which are adjustable manually or through Responsive Air™ technology, which uses pressure sensors to detect movement while you sleep, changing the firmness accordingly. The mattress has two air chambers, which can be programmed independently – perfect for couples.
Smart Technology
Get insights into your sleep quality with the Sleep Number SleepIQ® app, which is connected to pressure sensors in the bed, measuring biometrics like heart rate, breathing rate, and movement.
Adjustable Base Compatible
This mattress can be used with adjustable bases, though Sleep Number recommends one of their FlexFit™ adjustable smart bases. Do not place the mattress on a frame with slats or a box spring base, as these won’t be able to adequately support the bed’s weight.
Construction: What’s Inside the Sleep Number 360® i10?
The Sleep Number 360® i10 is the tallest of Sleep Number’s Innovation series beds, with a 13-inch profile. The mattress starts with a Smart 3D poly-blend cover that’s designed to be soft, temperature-balancing, and 50 percent more breathable than other fabrics.
- Below the cover is a 7-inch comfort layer, made up of two different types of foam – ThermaLux™ and Ergonomex™. ThermaLux™ is a temperature-balancing material that’s infused with ceramic, which Sleep Number says is four times more conductive than conventional gel foams. Plus, ThermaLux™ doesn’t stiffen in cooler temperatures (unlike traditional memory foam). Ergonomex™ foam is infused with a swirl gel, which is designed to contour close to the sleeper, providing great support. The comfort layer offers seven-zoned support.
- There are two separate air chambers in each i10 mattress, made with 24-gauge vulcanized rubber, with cotton fabric on the exterior. Each air chamber has its own hose and pump, which inflates and deflates the chamber to adjust the Sleep Number i.e. firmness level. DualAir technology allows each sleeper to program their air chamber to suit their individual needs. Sleep numbers are programmed via remote control or the SleepIQ® app.
- A 1-inch foam base pad sits below the air chambers, helping to keep the mattress stable.
The Sleep Number 360® i10 requires a power source within five feet of the bed, as well as a wifi connection.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
You don’t have to worry about unboxing your Sleep Number bed since the company provides a delivery and setup service. However, this comes at an additional cost of 249 dollars and is required with your mattress purchase.
There may be off-gassing with this bed, as it contains foams. Off-gassing is considered harmless and is the result of chemical by-products escaping after being vacuum-packed. If you’re bothered by the odor, leave the bed in a ventilated room, and the smell should disappear within a few hours.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping
- Shipping – This bed has to be delivered using Sleep Number’s white glove delivery service, which costs 249 dollars and includes the set-up of your new bed, as well as a demonstration on how to use it.
- White Glove Delivery – As covered above, Sleep Number has an in-home delivery service for an additional 249 dollars. Along with that, your old mattress can be removed and recycled for an extra 49 dollars. This premium service is available to select areas in all 50 states and may be available outside of these areas for an additional fee.
- Trial – You can try out this bed for up to 100 nights before deciding if it’s the perfect fit for you.
- Warranty – Sleep Number offers a 15-year limited warranty. All costs of repair or replacement are free in the first year, and then the customer will have to pay a percentage of the costs from the second year. This percentage rises from 30 percent in the second year to 85 percent in the fifteenth year.
- Return Policy – As long as you’ve tried your bed for at least 30 nights, you can return it within the 100-night trial for a full refund. However, you’ll have to cover the cost of the return – Sleep Number offers a return service for 240 dollars plus tax.

Overall Summary
Suitable for a wide range of sleepers, the Sleep Number 360® i10 is a great choice for light to average-weight people in all positions, as well as couples.
Side Sleepers
4/5
With its 7 inches of contouring foam, the i10 could be a great pick for side sleepers who need deep cushioning and pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. While this should suit most sleepers, some heavier people may find themselves sinking too deeply, causing spine misalignment and potential discomfort.
Back Sleepers
4/5
As this model has denser foam than some of Sleep Number’s other models, we think most sleepers should be able to find a firm enough setting that provides the required lumbar support. However, some heavyweight sleepers may find their hips sinking too deeply, creating pressure in the lower back.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
We think this bed is a great choice for light to average-weight stomach sleepers, who should be able to find a sleep number that provides the necessary hip support, while also delivering comfortable cushioning from the contouring foam. However, some heavyweight front sleepers may find this bed doesn’t provide the necessary support to keep the hips lifted.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
Responsive Air™ technology detects pressure changes during the night, automatically adjusting firmness – this is a great feature for combination sleepers, who require different firmness levels in different positions. However, some sleepers may feel ‘stuck’ in the thick comfort layer, preventing them from moving with ease.
Couples
3/5
The i10 offers good motion isolation and cooling, which are important factors for couples. The DualAir technology allows couples to customize firmness on their respective sides of the bed, which could be perfect for those with conflicting preferences. However, the edge support isn’t great, and the lack of bounce could be a downside for sexually-active couples.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
While the i10 can be programmed to its firmest level, this still won’t feel as firm as some other beds, due to its thick comfort layer. This could affect some heavier sleepers, who may find themselves bottoming out. However, we do think this bed could suit some heavier types, so make the most of the 100-night trial and see for yourself.
Lightweight Sleepers
5/5
Lightweight people should find this bed incredibly comfortable, experiencing great pressure relief, contouring, and support in all positions. Lightweight combination sleepers should also be able to move around with ease, as they shouldn’t sink too deep and feel ‘stuck’ in the foam as heavier sleepers might.
Average Weight Sleepers
5/5
We think this bed could be a great choice for average-weight sleepers in all sleeping positions. While the i10 has a thicker foam layer than other Sleep Number beds, it features denser foam, which could provide more support for stomach sleepers, who should also feel cushioned at the shoulders and chest.
Overall Value
3/5
The Sleep Number 360® i10 comes with unique features like adjustable firmness and DualAir technology. However, this technology comes at a higher price, and this cost may escalate if the bed malfunctions over time because the warranty only covers the full cost of repair in the first year.
Our Verdict
The Sleep Number 360® i10 is a smart bed that offers a choice of 20 firmness levels, as well as dual air chambers, which allow couples to customize firmness levels on each side of the bed. A key feature is the Responsive Air™ technology, which adjusts firmness throughout the night, depending on the sleeper’s movements – this is great for combination sleepers.
While we think this bed could be a fantastic choice for light to average-weight people, some heavier people might not find it supportive enough. However, with a 100-night sleep trial, everyone can test the bed in the comfort of their own home before making a final decision.
