Pros
The bed’s ability to range from a soft feel to a firm one makes it versatile and suitable for everyone, regardless of the sleeping position.
The Saatva is a good fit for eco-conscious shoppers as it contains natural and organic materials, such as cotton and latex.
While some beds use either memory foam or latex, this bed uses both materials, which we found creates a unique feel.
Cons
The Solaire is expensive compared to other mattresses offered by Saatva.
The bed offers many benefits and is completely customizable, but it may lack the bounce many innersprings have.

Who We Recommend The Saatva Solaire For:

  • Hot sleepers – This product uses several naturally cool materials, including cotton and latex, with gel-infused memory foam to keep hot sleepers extra cool and satisfied. According to Michael, the cotton cover feels cool and cozy, “kind of like a cozy sweatshirt”.

  • Couples – We feel the foams in the Solaire do a good job of isolating motion, so you don’t easily wake your partner during the night. For even more personalization, couples who purchase either a Queen or King bed can choose an Upper Flex model. This allows each partner to adjust the firmness and position on their side.

  • Targeted support seekers – The latex foam in this mattress is zoned, and the 1 to 50 customization selections allow for precise adjustment so you can find the right firmness for you.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Saatva Solaire For:

  • Budget shoppers – We think Solaire’s adjustable design is a fantastic benefit in the mattress space, but the enhanced design also means it comes at a higher price point. For those on a tight budget, this could be a significant drawback. However, this is a high-quality mattress that should last long, so it may be worth considering even with the high price. Check out our best budget mattress options.

  • People who want an innerspring bed – The Saatva Solaire’s construction doesn’t include an innerspring layer, and some people like coils because they help add bounce and airflow. If you prefer having coils in your mattress, we recommend one of the brand’s innerspring beds.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Solaire

On Saatva’s website, the reviews for the Saatva Solaire are overwhelmingly positive, coming in at 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva Solaire mattress for its adjustable firmness settings but may find its price point to be higher than expected.

Testing the Saatva Solaire Mattress

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

When testing the Saatva Solaire, we consider multiple important factors for shoppers. When Michael tested it, he played around with the remote, making sure to test all the perks of the Saatva Solaire.

Our team always ensures to test the mattress in different sleep positions to see how it stacks up in each posture, specifically for pressure relief and support. This helps us narrow down which sleepers the bed would be good for. We also test for other preference-based features, such as cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support.
For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.

Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 4-7/10

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

The Solaire mattress stands out for its customization. The bed has a unique air chamber that allows sleepers to adjust firmness on a scale of 4 to 7 out of 10. For reference, Sleep Advisor’s mattress firmness scale goes from 1-10, so it’s safe to say this bed had exceptional range, going from a soft feel to a firm feel. This allows the Solaire to adapt to various body types and sleep styles.

How Does It Feel?

The breathable cotton cover should feel cool to the touch, which is great for those who frequently overheat at night. You should feel the softness of the pillow top when you place your hands on the mattress. However, you’ll also notice the quick response coming from the latex below.

The mattress cradles your body but keep in mind that the customizable settings impact how it does this. The setting you choose also impacts how the mattress feels, so this is something to remember.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

According to Saatva, their Solaire mattress is made to support up to 800 pounds on each side, totaling 1,600 pounds. As a result, the Solaire should be an exceptionally supportive mattress, particularly for couples or people who have kids or pets who want to share the bed.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Our team feels that lightweight sleepers will likely enjoy this bed most at its softest settings. These sleepers need the most pressure relief, and latex and memory foam layers should do a good job of providing just that.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Sleepers in the average-weight range can make this bed softer or at a medium feel to ensure their hips and shoulders don’t have pressure while maintaining body alignment.
Saatva Solaire side sleeper testing
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight people may experience some pressure buildup in this posture, but the adjustable design allows you to soften or harden the bed to help make you more comfortable.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – We think lightweight back sleepers should feel well-supported while in this position, especially if they set the bed to medium firmness.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers will likely want to set their air chamber closer to 40 to ensure proper support, especially in the lumbar area.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers will probably enjoy this bed’s firmest setting.
Saatva Solaire back sleeper test

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers will likely want a firmer setting to keep the hips and stomach lifted.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-size stomach sleepers will also want the bed to remain at the firmest level to prevent the hips from sinking too deeply.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Some heavier-than-average people may do okay with the firmest settings on the Solaire. However, significantly heavier sleepers may still prefer something firmer. In this case, consider the brand’s HD model, designed specifically for plus-size sleepers.

Pressure Relief

5/5

The Solaire’s pressure relief construction starts with the pillow top and continues into the Talalay latex right below. It’s combined with the third comfort layer made of 2 inches of memory foam. The combination of latex and memory foam is known for its ability to contour and melt away pain. One thing to remember is that the latex layer is located in the center third of the bed and is zoned to target specific areas prone to pressure.

If you look at our pressure maps above, you’ll notice barely any pressure in every position. This is great news, though anyone seeking additional relief, can adjust the bed firmness to a softer setting.

Is the Saatva Solaire Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

We think the Solaire’s adjustable firmness should serve sleepers well when it comes to pain relief. Depending on where your pain is located you can adjust the firmness according to your needs.

Back Pain

The Solaire has a lot of advantages for back pain. The range of firmness settings should help ensure proper spine alignment. Plus, the zoned latex layer is denser to provide enhanced support and is in the middle, which is important because that’s where most weight is.

Read More: Best Mattresses for Back Pain

Hip Pain

We think people with hip pain should appreciate this bed’s use of pressure-relieving memory foam and latex. Furthermore, the adjustable feel helps ensure you can find the right comfort level.

Read More: Best Mattress for Hip Pain

Shoulder Pain

As with hip pain, those with shoulder pain should like the bed’s customizable firmness and combination of materials that allows plenty of pressure relief. However, heavier side sleepers may notice some pressure buildup that can make the pain worse. Browse the best mattresses for shoulder pain here.

Support

4/5

Another core component of a high-quality bed is support. A strong support system will help keep your spine aligned while you rest, minimizing your risk of developing or worsening chronic back pain.

What stands out the most with this adjustable mattress is that those who need a sturdier, firmer bed for back support can customize the firmness to a higher level. The Solaire’s firmness settings go from 1 to 50, so you can easily find a firmness that suits your needs. Additionally, the Talalay latex layer is zoned to provide additional support, especially in the lumbar region.

Motion Isolation

4/5

Motion isolation is a great benefit when it comes to anchoring motion to one side of the mattress. When a pet, child, or sleeping partner moves, motion isolation should help prevent you from feeling anything on your side of the bed.

Michael performed a series of tests to see how movement transfers from one side of the bed to the other. From that, we saw that this mattress has excellent motion isolation and is suitable for partners with different sleeping habits.

Even when he jumped into the bed, the cup on the other side didn’t tip over. The foamed layers help keep motion to one side of the bed, and the Upper-Flex Queen or King models heighten this by creating a split between both sides in the head portion of the mattress.

We put a cup of coffee on the Saatva Solaire and put it to the test.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

4/5

The surface of this mattress should stay cool with the help of the cotton cover, a breathable material that shouldn’t get too hot. “I think the latex in the first layer helps keep the temperature on top relatively low.”, Michael pointed out. Additionally, gel is infused into the memory foam further below to prevent overheating.

Learn More: Best Cooling Mattress

Bounce

4/5

This bed has Talalay latex that’s known to be quite responsive. The top bounces back into shape quickly, so you shouldn’t worry about repositioning. However, as it’s the case with other specifications, the level of bounciness and responsiveness depends on the firmness level you set, so it’s best to play around a little until you find what suits you the most.

Edge Support

4/5

“Sleeping on the side of the bed, normally, is just fine.” according to Michael, who tested this bed in person. Although the edges hold up very well, it’s important to note that you may notice edge support levels dropping as you lower the firmness level as well. The higher the setting, the stronger the edges.

Performance for Couples

5/5

We think the Solaire’s most appealing selling point is the Upper-Flex option, which is only available in Queen size and up. The Upper-Flex design means that each partner has their own air chamber on each side of the bed for personal customization. This is helpful for couples with different sleep preferences.

Another advantage for couples is that we found the Solaire delivers good edge support, which means you and your significant other can feel free to spread out across the mattress.

Preference-Based Features

Multiple Firmness Options

This mattress offers a competitive advantage by providing sleepers with up to 50 firmness choices. These range from soft all the way to firm, so you can find what works best for your sleep style.

As Michael demonstrated, there are remotes on each side of the bed, so both partners can customize their side separately.

Free White Glove Delivery

When you order a Solaire bed, you are also getting free white glove delivery with your purchase. Not only will the company deliver the mattress right to your door, but a team of professionals will set it up for you. You do not need to worry about your old mattress either; they’ll remove that free of charge as well.

Exceptional Edge Support

The Solaire’s Power Edge Enclosure creates optimum edge support by reinforcing support along the bed’s perimeter. When testing the bed, Michael noticed the edge support changes when you change firmness levels. “Sleeping on the side of the bed normally is just fine, just don’t hug that edge,” he points out.

Eco-Conscious Materials

Saatva is an excellent company for those who want beds that are more environmentally friendly. The Solaire features a certified organic cotton cover, 100 percent natural latex, and foams certified to be safe from harmful levels of chemicals or substances.

Adjustable Base Compatible

The Saatva Solaire mattress is compatible with different foundations, including an adjustable base.

Julia Forbes testing the Saatva Adjustable Base
Julia, our lead tester, testing a Saatva mattress on an adjustable base.

Construction: What’s Inside the Saatva Solaire?

The Solaire Adjustable Mattress is 13 inches tall. The organic cotton cover is quilted to a 2-inch layer of foam to create a pillow top.

  • Below the pillow top is a 1-inch tall layer of 5-zone natural latex. This material is buoyant and responsive on top of being denser in the middle, which helps enhance pressure relief.
  • Next is a 2-inch gel-infused memory foam designed to relieve pressure and tension. The foam contours your body but doesn’t overheat as it has gel infusions that help draw the heat away from your body.
  • Further down is a unique 1-inch thick moisture barrier that helps prevent bacteria growth. The barrier helps prolong the lifespan of your Saatva while also promoting an overall healthier sleep environment.
  • The next layer is the 6-inch air chamber. This layer is made from vulcanized latex and acts as the primary support system for the bed. You can find your preferred firmness by adjusting the air chamber between 1 and 50.
  • Below the air chamber is an inch of 5-zone convoluted polyfoam. This helps create more contouring and responsiveness at the bottom of the bed.
  • Encasing the bed is a Power Edge enclosure reinforcing the perimeter. Another thing about this layer is that it encases the pumps and hoses, so they’re not visible.

Sleepers can control how much air goes into each chamber by using the attached remote controls. One thing to point out is that Solaire beds that are a Queen size or larger come with two remotes – one for each side, so both partners can control their side individually.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

Setting up your Solaire mattress should be a breeze because the company offers complimentary white glove delivery with your purchase. This means a team of movers will set up the bed for you.

Temporary off-gassing is common in new mattresses, but the Solaire’s use of more eco-friendly materials helps reduce off-gassing. This is an advantage if you’re sensitive to smells.

Certifications

  • Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they were inspected by a third party that found them to have safe amounts of potentially harmful chemicals and metals.
  • Certified Natural Materials – The cotton cover of this mattress is GOTS-certified. This means that the cotton meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic.

Saatva Solaire FAQs

How long should the Solaire last?

The Saatva Solaire should be useable for roughly 10 years. However, this very much depends on how you use the mattress. Jumping on the bed and any other similar misuse will lead to quicker wear and tear and is also violating the warranty.

How thick is the Saatva Solaire?

This mattress is 13 inches thick. This is a bit on the thicker side when compared to most mattresses on the market. However, it’s not the tallest and shouldn’t look any bulky in your bedroom, regardless of the base you pair it with.

How does the Solaire’s air chamber work?

The Solaire’s air chamber features 50 firmness settings, with the air pressure becoming increasingly firmer the higher up you go. You can control the air chamber settings using a remote control.

Is the Solaire flippable?

No, the Solaire mattress is not flippable. This is because the layers are made to lie in a specific order, and flipping the bed would affect performance.

You can find flippable mattresses here.

Our Verdict

The Solaire’s incredible firmness range allows it to complement a variety of sleepers. After testing the Solaire, we think it’s a good fit for back sleepers, combination sleepers, couples, and average-weight people. Combination sleepers can easily soften up the bed if they decide to rotate from their back or stomach to their side. Couples can get even more customization by purchasing the brand’s Upper-Flex design, which allows them to customize their side of the bed.

In some cases, heavier stomach sleepers may not find the Solaire supportive enough, in which case they may prefer the Saatva HD mattress. Additionally, fans of innerspring beds will likely opt for another Saatva model, such as the Classic. We gave this bed an overall score of 4.2 out of 5.
